I don't think there's another way to channel aether, at least not that I'm aware of. Perhaps we don't have enough aether around to manage your suggestion? I do understand all too well the consequences.

Bearers, those who can't channel and eikon but can channel aether, and Dominants, use their aether until they turn completely to stone. It's a slow agonising death.
