Mind flayers are soulless, tentacled creatures from the astral plane. They feed by consuming the brains of mortals and propagate by infecting others with their tadpoles. They seek total the subjugation of all other races, and operate from hive minds, which control all those in their thrall through force and pain of death.

I do not say this lightly, but they are very nearly Evil by design.
