[He says it, and it is an odd little thing, this spark of hope in her heart. They have promised each other this so many times before, but tonight, it sinks in differently. It hits so much deeper and harder than it had before.]
... I know.
[Perhaps because there is more room for it, now that they have banished yet another weight that had been there. That empty place left behind by the hand of fate that had gripped them before is filled with their promise of always, of forever. No longer do they have to carry that, and instead, they can hold onto this, can foster it into something bigger and greater than anything they could have before.
The journey has been long, and they still have an even longer journey ahead of them. Still, burdens that they must learn not to shoulder on their own and to share them with each other. Obstacles that they must somehow overcome, but at least now, they have more freedom to do so. Together, with one less thing trying to tear them apart after all these years. It will take some time, she knows, and so much effort, but they have already made it this far, have they not? There is no sense in turning back now, and even if she thought to run from all these hardships, her heart would not let her. It sits in the palms of his hands, guarded and safe.
She knows that now.
And she believes in it. Believes in every word he utters to her as she kisses him softly and slowly, her lips bearing every single one of these feelings and promises because words are not enough. She wishes to kiss away these twinges of guilt and their regrets, and leave behind this lighter, freer feeling now. They might never be fully free from that, but it truly feels like they can start to move forward, take bigger strides towards that future that they both yearn for.
Together, they drift off into another deep sleep, to the soft presses of their lips and the rhythmic, steady sound of their heartbeats and the splash of the waves. A sleep that carries them all the way to the morning, when the ship stirs outside their cabin.
She is loathe to let him go tend to his captain's duties, clinging to him as there is a knock on their door, peppering him with kisses until it truly is time to let him go. With this new life stretched out in front of them, she wishes to take every opportunity to bask in this new freedom.
Which is why she will be eager to return to their new home when they arrive back at the Roost. To spend time with him and only him, keen to make up for all these lost years yet again. She's not sure that they ever will make up for it all, but they can certainly try. So for the next three days, not a soul will see her as she tangles herself up in him and his warmth, his presence, his sturdy company until they fall asleep yet again.
As they can finally start to make this home their own in every way that they can...]
