Who: Kaveh and YOU
Status: Open
Where: Surasthana Cafe on Eltrut!
What: The grand opening of a book cafe.
Warnings: God I hope not.
[Kaveh hasn't talked much about what he's been working on for a few months now, because he wanted this moment to be a surprise (and because he didn't want to be scolded for overwork). It has finally paid off, now, with the grand opening of the Surasthana Cafe, just in time for the deep end of the fall season. The cafe is cozily furnished and warm, the smell of lovingly brewed coffee floats through the air, and soft music plays from Mehrak.
Kaveh isn't expecting a huge rush on any given day--this was done for his own sake more than anything, but now on weekday afternoons, the little book cafe can be found and people can stay a spell, enjoying expertly made coffee drinks and some light reading in a ridiculous plant paradise.
If you have any requests for new kinds of books, or wish to purchase various accessories, stop by the front counter! The owner is happy to accommodate you, after all.
ooc: you may also treat this post as a mingle and toplevel accordingly, just mark if you are doing so! Otherwise, Kaveh will be coming for you!]

passionate nerd to nerd communication hours
however he is a good listener, and he is very observant of that little grimace - there's a little laugh, a sympathetic wince. ]
I see... I suppose that teaches a touch about the culture as well, doesn't it? [ a wry little joke, as he sets his hand on the book he was reading. ] One has to wonder where that impression came from...
Ah, but, at any rate - I've hardly met a book I won't read, though I'm itching to get my hands on more nonfiction, as it were. Histories and the like of the region, of conflict, of magic - so on and so forth...? I've only just arrived, and there is much to learn.
[ he sounds Delighted by this fact. ] Is this wonderful place yours, good sir?
they've linked up
[He loves his husband very much but he is not going to miss any chance to roast him ALIVE for this one.]
A new riftfarer? It must be a little overwhelming, huh? Yes, this place is mine, we just opened it up...if you're looking for histories, ask Alhaitham later, but the Paladins keep a pretty tight hand on that up at the Conservatory, on Elah. I'll do my best to get what I can, at least.
clown to clown communication meme
I'd appreciate the contact information of Alhaitham, if you wouldn't mind. [ a pause. ] As for a relative newness - perhaps a touch, but truthfully, I find it to be more exciting than anything. How rare it is, to find yourself in a place where you've so much to learn, no?
[ though... beyond that, as kaveh continues, that brightness fades, and cyrus' nose wrinkles at the bit about the conservatory, his mouth pulling down into a frown. a wealth of knowledge, chokeheld by one of the factions out and about. ]
...Do they, now? [ disapproving. ] I'll have to investigate, though that's a shame... there's hardly any sense in keeping a history and keeping it under lock and key. Is the conservatory an academic institution?
spiderman pointing but it's academics
[There is mirth in Kaveh's tone, and unmistakeable fondness, too. After all, he built this place for just such a reason.]
I'm not entirely sure...it seems more religious than academic. The fact of the matter is, much of this world's history seems to be lost...in their mind, they are protecting what is left, I'm sure.
[Kaveh's not really a fan of the restrictiveness of the conservatory either. But what can he do by complaining? Better to find other avenues for the riftfarers to find what they need.]
not here but also here
an architect and a historian walk into a bar...
I suppose. [ the frown lingers for a moment, brow furrows, but it's not that surprising, either. even the order of the sacred flame has their sacred texts. ] It seems a bit counterintuitive, does it not? History is the story of the past, and the stories of the past are best told when they are remembered. An institution that seeks to keep the public ill-informed is a poorly institution, indeed.
[ but kaveh didn't ask for those opinions, and that's a little dreary, so he huffs and shakes his head after, expression melting back into a warmer smile. ]
But still, that makes your particular institution even more of a treasure trove. Thank you very much for your contribution, my good man - neighborly cultural quirks included. This place of yours and... your partner's, I take it? [ glancing over at the sprawled out man... he sees... ] - is wonderful.
What a life to live, to be a well-read cat. One we might all aspire to. [ teehee. joking aside, though:]
I intend to visit this conservatory and see what I might find. Should there be anything particularly of note, I can bring it by, if you'd like - knowledge is best exchanged mutually, no? I imagine I will be in and out quite a bit where able.
and then the architect starts yelling about fire safety and interior design.
[Kaveh huffs, indignant at the whole idea, irritated by the whole mess. The Paladins really do remind him of the Akademiya, and that is not wholly a compliment.
He does brighten, though, at the opportunity to talk about his husband.
Oh no, Cyrus, what have you done.]
Oh, thank you! I made it mostly to keep myself busy and my husband contented while I work--he does most of the research of the two of us, since he's better at it, but do not let him hear I said so, he'll start to get a big head.
[Kaveh laughs, and leans in conspiratorially.] I've wondered for some time now if it might benefit us to collate what he's learned, so if you bring us more from the Conservatory, I'd highly recommend seeing if you can't combine your notes with his. He's not good with new people or small talk, but I think he'll appreciate the work of a fellow scholar.
[Please befriend his man.]
cyrus eagerly takes notes.
and then, well. watching him light up like that is interesting. he laughs, swept up a bit in the energy of it all, looking just as amused. ]
Is that so? Well! Any opportunity to befriend a fellow is a fine opportunity indeed - and I've hardly met a stranger in terms of academic discourse. [ he adds, a little wryly, tongue in cheek: ] And you've no worries, in that regard - I've been told I'm quite the talker.
[ that's the understatement of the century but at least he recognizes it about himself. ] At any rate! I've been catching up to speed as quickly as I can, but there are only so many hours in so many days, so I would be happy to oblige.
As for your secret, rest assured it is safe with me. [ teasing, a little lighter - the comment kaveh made about research being the secret, of course. the smile on his face in return is quite genuine, warm as he remarks in observation -] You're married? A love match, I see.
he has such things to teach you
[From the time Kaveh began to envision a real person instead of the fantasy of being married in general, it's always been with alhaitham. when they were apart, he stopped imagining marriage at all, and when they came back together...well, it was a long time before he allowed himself a selfish dream again. But if not him, then who else could it have ever been?]
Just don't take offense to his reticence! He's slow to warm up to most people, and painfully blunt, and he'll point out truths you might have rathered he'd stayed silent about, but rarely does he set out with the intent to harm others. He just...refuses to moderate himself to match any other living soul, barring a few exceptional circumstances.
[Because he's seen Alhaitham do it, for Collei and for Freminet. He's not a cruel man, he simply does not see the need to modulate himself for most people. When the need is recognized, he does it without complaint or remark. It's the sort of kindness that goes unnoticed, unless you know to look for it.]
Honestly, he might know more about this world than I do...or at least be able to explain it more thoroughly. He's meticulous when he bothers to put the effort in, and a lot less willing to abide by anyone's rules but his own. [A beat.] Well, unless you want me to tell you about the architectural and shipwright styles between the different armadas, I've got him thoroughly beat there!
🥺
[ that's so cute... cyrus is not much of a romantic himself, but the context is one thing, and better so, seeing kaveh light up so much is always nice. when people are passionate, their faces, their voices, their everything sings with it, so it is a warm sight to behold.
as he continues, cyrus laughs and waves a hand towards the bit about reticence, though. easygoing, and, honestly, recognizing - it's charming that kaveh is so fussy about it, but more importantly: ] My good man, there really is no need to worry! I've known many the type.
[ he does after all travel with therion, who is the equivalent of an angry cat ready to bite your arm off at any given time. so. cyrus nods along to all of this, making the mental note to engage with alhaitham and share resources sometime soon, pleased. ] But your forthcoming warnings and kindness are beyond courtesy, and I thank you for them. Truly, it sounds as if your man is a scholar, through and through - social graces and all. I should look forward to our upcoming exchange full-heartedly.
[ from the meticulousness to the marching to the beat of their own proverbial drum. as kaveh carries on, though, talking about his own academics, he can see that cyrus' blue eyes light up, and the smile on his face dawns slow, pleased. ]
Would you mind, terribly? Telling me a bit about the architecture. [ sparkle ] I'd quite like to hear about it - there's nothing quite like hearing an expert talk their craft.
