It is similar in shape to a pipa, but the sound and manner of playing it is different.

This venerable one never learned the pipa. This venerable one once trained on the guqin, but as there has been no reason to play it in thousands of years, this venerable one has not. The guqin has seven strings and is placed on a table or lap to play. The pipa has four strings and is held upright as it is plucked.
