« mini manta board log: auction houses »

SPECIAL QUEST: AUCTION HOUSES

This mini log is for the Special Quest listed on the January 2025 MANTA Board. The IC and OOC timeline for the log is for the entire month of January, and players can play with the idea that things get more difficult later in the month as word spreads and auction houses become more difficult to access and deceive.

There have been recent reports of large amounts of inventory potentially related to the recent whale hunting and crystal statues appearing in various underground auction houses. They are hard to find and both Armadas are feeling heat from the public and higher officials: Corsairs for being suspected as the ones behind all this illegal trade and the Paladins for not being able to close this case out yet.

Both sides will either be working against or with each other depending on what they are assigned to do or how they meet, and suspicions will be high from both sides. Be careful!

There are multiple auction house locations, all with different inventory passing through but all are high end with only those in the know or of elite status will frequent. They are often held on remote islands, but some are clever enough to have them literally underground beneath venues such as casinos. Some are actually "innocent" in the sense that while they likely have illegal goods in their stock, they are not related to the whales and crystal trade. However, they still need to be investigated, and who knows? Maybe there are interesting items there…

Objectives: The following are objectives or assignments that members of each Armada can do in an attempt to infiltrate and investigate the auction houses to find the targeted goods and those involved in the trade. While listed generally, players can be creative to alter and change things to fit the style of the Armada. Working together or against opposing members is allowed.

"Security." Pose as a security member to guard any of these positions: outside the building, high ranking auction participants, storerooms where inventory is kept.
Buyer. Participate in the auction and try to win the item! Where the funds are coming from—not our problem.
Seller. Find something to be sold at the auction house. Is it actually worth something? Is it fake? Have to be convincing to get it on the list somehow and allow entrance into the building.
Other. Any other possible means to get inside the auction house. Just sneak in like a thief? Post as an inspector? A journalist? Crazy drunk? Be creative!
Raid. For those who don't have the patience or have determined that targeted items are there, just raid the auction house! Arrest, capture, or kill(??) them all!!! This might not always be the best option, but perhaps the chaos could create openings.

The following are items that one might find at any of the auction houses, but players can also come up with something else that could be interesting! If a player would like to claim or be part of a specific find or list something they made up, comment to this subthread.

🐋 Whale parts. From raw materials such as bones, ambergris, and oil to specific goods made from such materials such as perfumes, scented oils, wines, and furniture. Without a specific license of approval, this is all considered illegal and one of the main targets for this quest.

👤 Crystal statues. Encased in solid crystal will be animals and people who are victims of the illegal operations that started late summer. Are they still alive or not? Like the whale parts, this is the high priority target.

🫙 Potions. A number of different potion sets will be up for grabs. Their effects range from powerful healing to love potions to dangerous curses.

🦄 Creatures. Various creatures and beasts are a common staple for these auction houses. Sprites and fairies, golems, rare animals like the unicorn, or even dangerous monsters that can barely stay contained in their cage. Some of them may even resemble past bounties: horned dolphins, small carnivorous rabbits, mermaids. Some of these are legitimate, but many are fake.

📚 Forbidden Tomes. Various books that deal with ancient myths, legends, spells, curses, creatures—the topics will vary. There is even a limited edition signed copy of the hit erotic dragon fanfiction, Dragonheat. However, some of these may be fake and contain grandma's old recipes instead. Wait, that actually might be valuable—!!

🪈 Sound of Music. There are special instruments that are said to have special effects when played, such as talking during one's sleep, compelled to speak the truth, etc. There is even a very rare otamatone that only plays the song Thunderstruck. Music sheets are also in demand, some claiming the music could lead the way to treasure, or the notes are actually a secret code for something else. There is also a valuable antique music box said to have a haunting melody, the dancing figure seemingly able to move on its own…

🐕‍🦺 Commanding Collar. A special collar that when worn will make the wearer obey whatever their "owner" demands. "SIT BOY!" Handcuffs sold separately.

🗺️ Treasure Map Pieces. Treasure maps are common to find, but only a few are worth the gold the auction houses bring. Scattered throughout numerous auction houses are pieces of a treasure map said to lead to an "ancient treasure" that dates back to the time before the Flood, when the world had more land masses than water. Is it real or not? (A map CAN be formed, but it will depend on how many map pieces are found during this log!)

Wildcard. For any other items that players may think of!

It goes without saying that any auction house that is selling either or both the whale parts and crystal statues will need to be shut down. How that happens, well. Guess it depends on who is there.

If you have any questions, comment here.

astudyinviolet: Scruffy Sherlock looking concerned (⩑ Five Emerald Snaps)

wrap up or continue?

[personal profile] astudyinviolet 2025-02-01 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
[ Chris has no idea. They really don't.

Sherlock makes a noncommittal noise and acts as if he doesn't know them on his way back to his post. He enters the door to the auction storage and should have locked it after him. The door is closed, but the lock is not turned.

Blame the lack of lunch. My how irresponsible of him to be so lax with security.

Sure lets wrap

(If anyone would have noticed Chris following Sherlock and going into the auction storage... no they didn't. The power of making oneself invisible to others perceptions.

It likely won't work so well on Sherlock, but he's not the one they're hiding from.

Anyway, a useful ability that will surely aid them in any possible thefts.)

[ Similar... Meaning are they counterfeit? Cloud is frowning, looking towards the caged creatures. Yes, he had his own goals here. He wants to get to all of where the bookkeeping is done. Wants to get samples of what had become of the whales.

But -

A hand goes to her shoulder. ]

Hold on...

[ Seems like Cloud just can't leave those creatures be. ]

[ At least Cloud also looks like he could be a bodyguard or security around here. He nods and begins to put the clothes on over his own. Easier to sneak around this way, he supposes. ]

Got it. What about the accounting offices or any idea where we can find their inventory lists?

[ Sherlock may not understand why he gets that sense that someone is watching him before he spots them, but each time he does, Sherlock pointedly looks away or moves to another area. Maybe he'll harass some other people who should rightfully be in the area just to appear like he's doing his job and occupy them for awhile.

This cannot have consequences for Sherlock in the future. (Spoilers: it does.)

treebornekettlegirl: (By the way I'm better looking)

slides in totally not a million years later (i. miriam gets a red assistant)

[personal profile] treebornekettlegirl 2025-02-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Miriam wouldn't be the only dealer with braided hair here at the auction house. For there was another girl, boasting on and on about being an all-powerful brewer of elixirs that can change a person or creature's being with just a drop of a totally legit potion. The short redhead spun tales of men and women's bodies morphing, twisting, transforming. Into pigs, into cats, into ducks, into a horrendous gallimaufry of creatures to make up an abominable amalgamation. And, as she had previously proven to the naysayers in the back doubting the legitimacy of her craft, change a person's sex. That, with a live demonstration using 'herself', or should we say himself for he had shown up as male before, and a dramatic flourish while doing so, completely won them over. They fell for it completely!

... though that had raised a new problem for the martial artist that she hadn't taken into account for: they'd want to try it out for themselves. Crap. People were already trying to pry the corks off the small vials, how was she going to get out of this one...?]

Huh-- Oof!

[Her saving grace came in the form of an irate lady dumping an easel into her arms, chastising her for who knows what, and dragging her off to who knows where... Honestly? Ranma couldn't be more grateful for a pissed off chick getting mad at him for something he didn't do right now. She really didn't want to stick around there long enough to see those jerks figure out they've been duped.

Their getting pulled along grinds to a halt in the middle of what looked like substandard art exhibit. Any brief annoyance she had - cause she did have a plank of wood shoved in her face - quickly dies out at the partially familiar voice. Oh hey, it's that one girl who smacked her with a train that one time. :D]

Mm-mmm. [Shaking her head, Ranma finally sets the stand down.] It wasn't that heavy, so...

[Don't think she was talking about the easel Ranma...]

Second floor.

[A nod upwards.]

With the auction about to be underway, more of the security detail are on the goods than the other offices.
feralhumanity: (Perhaps best described another way)

[personal profile] feralhumanity 2025-02-02 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, he doesn't doubt it either, and the thought is enough to draw a frown on his feline face. At the question, he turns and looks out at the cages, nodding as he does.]

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I can convince them to come with us... or at least let them know that we're going to take them to freedom.

[He's not fluent on every single beast language, but he can certainly try.]

Besides, any of the injured ones I can take to the Cosmo Conservatory. They'll be safe there...
36105997: (All of us are tinder-wood)

[personal profile] 36105997 2025-02-05 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
...

[The look of coldness Vincent gives the creature certainly isn't helpful. So he decides to be more useful. He shifts- making his way to the cages with the creatures to be released. He's probably most useful there. Having hands, and all. The swell of hope that overcomes the animals is helpful, too. Helpful for the fact that he knows which cages to open without being directly told- even if some of the creature's swells of hope- a chimpanzee for instance that insists upon rattling the bars and whooping excitedly- is a little too loud for the fact that Vincent wished them undetected for a little while yet.

Soon enough, the task is done. And as he approaches Nanaki, looking not at all like a disney princess with all of these animals accompanying him, Vincent glances to him.
]

I noticed a service entrance to the rear of the warehouse. That's likely our best option, but I expect guards outside. From there, jungle. I'll need you to navigate the way through it, to the beach.

[A task Nanaki would be best at. Fantastic sense of smell and all.]

As soon as we're out, they'll know. We won't be able to return without risking the animals.

[Vincent pauses.]

Has he decided?

[The beast is probably a he. Horns and all. ...Right?]

Ah, winging it then? I suppose we both know what they say about plans...

(Even the best laid ones tend to go awry. Fortunately, if there's anything they're truly good at, it's tactics.

For now, they need to see who or what is in need of rescue, and find out more about what they might be up against.)

Any thoughts on security?

[personal profile] ramuhs 2025-02-05 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[A low hum as he glances back at where they came and then to where they're heading.]

Surprisingly lax. Either they are sloppy or too overconfident. Which is all the more reason for one to check on his own wares to make sure they are safe, eh?

[While he's alluding to himself, he also means those who may have certain prizes in store. And sure enough, as they turn a corner they will see someone hurrying down a dimly lit corridor ahead of them. With a glance at his mysterious friend, he gestures for them to follow.]
crystalrepose: (13)

[personal profile] crystalrepose 2025-02-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[That--huh. Miriam did have to double take a second when she heard Ranma's voice. That must have been an extensive glamor there, more than the one that simply distorted Miriam's voice. Ranma didn't strike her as the type for them. But subterfuge tended to bring out unexpected things.]

Sorry for how abrupt that was. You seemed to be in a rough spot there.

[Now that Miriam was nearby, the paintings seemed to...change, subtly. They were still rather basic portraits of patrons done by an artist of middling skill at best, but every so often one seemed to be glancing someone's way, only to stop when directly looked at. Classic behavior.]
crystalrepose: (02)

[personal profile] crystalrepose 2025-02-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Before Miriam could charge ahead, the touch at her shoulder stopped her; she glanced back, but didn't take her eyes off the flurry of movement in front of them. Some of the crystals peeking out from her dress had begun to glow like warming engines.]

Do you need a distraction?
crystalrepose: (13)

[personal profile] crystalrepose 2025-02-05 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Miriam nodded, finding no reason to disbelieve him, though she did worry a bit. There was only one of him, and quite a number of people hostile to losing their merchandise.]

How can I help? I can cause a diversion from where I set up my stall. Or do you need a bigger commotion?

[Loud noises and inconvenience, or arson and property damage?]
telepathicignorance: (Smirk)

[personal profile] telepathicignorance 2025-02-06 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
True enough, certainly.

(Huh. They didn't sense that person. Not entirely shocking, but concerning. Worth keeping an eye out for. Best not to get caught because someone slipped through their defenses...)
feralhumanity: (Heheh!!)

[personal profile] feralhumanity 2025-02-06 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Nanaki looks back as Vincent reappears... and surrounded by friends, it seems. He nods to Vincent, liking the sound of the plan.]

Sounds good. From there, if some of the creatures want to make it to the jungle they can, but otherwise we can carry them back on the boats.

[He looks to the large beast of burden, who is watching the two of them intently. It still looks weary, but with all the commotion around them it appears to have gained a glimmer of light in its eyes. It lets out a low chuff, before snorting out loud and moving to slowly stand on its feet. Nanaki's tail wags behind him.]

Great! You won't regret it, promise! [He turns back to Vincent.] Are you ready?
feralhumanity: (Is this a good time?)

[personal profile] feralhumanity 2025-02-06 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Diversions, hmm? Nanaki could use that. He takes a minute to think, looking around.]

I think I just need some time to get to each cage and convince them all to come with me. After that, yeah... I'll need some kind of a diversion while I'm getting them all out. You think you could do that?
ramuhs: (⚡ 291)

[personal profile] ramuhs 2025-02-06 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
How about we take a peek as to where they're going? As far as I was told, everything should be stored down the this way.

[He nods towards a different hallway, opposite of where the other person had hurried off to.]
telepathicignorance: (Smirk)

[personal profile] telepathicignorance 2025-02-06 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
An excellent idea!

(The vocal distorter turns the cheer in their voice into something more screechy and grating. Sorry Cid.

They'll turn to head down that hallway, reaching out with their mind to see if there's anyone or anything they can detect.)
ramuhs: (⚡ 259)

[personal profile] ramuhs 2025-02-06 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oof—there will be a grimace at that as well as a glance. As if that's not even more suspicious...

But fortunately, the only presence Sidestep will sense is the one person who disappeared down the hall, and he should be able to pick up that they are in a room a few doors down.]
36105997: (109)

[personal profile] 36105997 2025-02-06 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Good to go.

[When the horned beast is freed, that is. There's a click and a thud as the key is inserted and the creature's way is clear, Vincent moving forward, amongst stacked crates and pallets, toward the back of the warehouse where he had known the door to be. It's likely going to be a tight fit for some of the animals. The majority of them get past with barely any extra accommodation. The larger ones do have to squeeze, but soon enough, they're all at the closed doorway.]

Nanaki.

[His voice lowers. Barely even a whisper, for the guards on the other side. His gloved hands moves to his gunbelt, preparing Cerberus with a few rounds after it is taken unto his hand.]

When we're out, I'll get their attention. You concentrate on defending the others, and getting clear.

[Probably best that way.]

If we get seperated, don't stop. I'll find you.

[There would be quite a lot of tracks to follow, by the look of it...]
feralhumanity: (You have to promise me)

[personal profile] feralhumanity 2025-02-07 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
[It's weirdly exciting, seeing all these creatures heading to the back entrance. He's feeling his tail twitch as he helps the animals make their way to the doorway. Truly, he couldn't have done it without Vincent's help in all this.]

[He turns, watching Vincent prepare Cerberus. His ears lower a bit, but he nods, expression firm.]

Alright. You be careful, too.

[And then, before they lose each other in the ensuing chaos, he speaks once more.]

I really have to thank you for all your help. I couldn't have done any of this without you.

I'm willing to bet not all of it. Some of them are categorized at least in likeness.

[He walks closer to a side of the wall.]

It smells like parchment.

It won't be.

[He holds back a sigh.]

We'll just use brute force if it comes down to it.
