Who: Beat and you
Status: Open
Where: Around
What: Manta quests and general catch-all throughout June
Warnings: None currently, will add, if any.
[As soon as Beat sees the MANTA for working on graffiti around the leviathans, he immediately secures a couple of spray cans, a new sketchbook to figure out his ideas, and sets out to find a space he could work with.
Throughout the month, he can be found around Eltrut and Nogard, working on two different artworks in a rough graffiti style similar to the wall back in Shibuya. In Nogard, the artwork leans more towards a skull and crossbones theme, leaning into the Corsair vibe in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellow, with graffiti lettering of Corsair splashed prominently to one side. Meanwhile, in Eltrut, he goes for a tropical vibe, taking inspiration from natural habitat of the leviathan, with a few embellishments here and there—such as an eye patch on a sea turtle.
While he's laid out the groundwork, there's still more than enough space for anyone to join in on the fun, spray cans of various colors scatters by his feet. Or perhaps you even notice his sketchbook sticking out of his backpack, a few of his random sketches on the page—anything from a skateboard design, a random passer-by (maybe it's even someone your character may know) that he had been watching from a distance, or maybe even a few Pokemon he's been around of late. Whatever the case, he seems engrossed in his work, and may need more than a gentle jostling to snap out of it.]
Hold up, you want me to what?!
[If the loud exclamation isn't enough for you to investigate, you might spot him standing in front of the play group just as one of them hands him a couple of pages as part of the script. "Take your shirt off," one of them says. The rest of the group seem unfazed by the request, as if this was expected of whoever signed up.
When Beat had read the quest, he didn't get past the large text slapped on the top. You can't expect someone to read the finer print, especially when that someone just so happens to be Beat. So he, on the other hand, is absolutely fazed, going so far as to tug his shirt downward unconsciously.]
Yo, when I read about it, I thought you needed someone to rough a coupla people up!
[It did say "Slay" on the quest title, after all.]
[Your character finds a discarded fishing rod in the middle of the shore or riverbank, a small canister of fish bait close-by. What you don't find nearby is its owner.
After a moment or two, you notice a figure standing out in the water, crouching with his hands up in the air on either side. He stands still before suddenly diving to grab at something in the water, disappearing underneath. He resurfaces eventually.
At times, he is empty-handed, sulking momentarily before moving to another spot and assuming the stance once more, seemingly in another attempt to catch something out of the water.
Otherwise, he struggles to resurface, finally breaking water with what seems to be a fish in hand. It doesn't go down without a fight, wriggling and thrashing as it tries to break free from Beat's grip.]
Ain't gonna be any easier if you don't stop movin'!
[As if it was going to talk back to him. Either way, help a guy out?]

WE'RE GOIN' FISHING
Inuyasha is observing him at the shore at first, content with just watching him wiggling around in the water for a bit.
He's hands are folded over his chest, puffing out an irritated sigh when Beat resurfaces with yet another empty handful. ]
You're doin' it all wrong, idiot! You've gotta bend your knees more! Your knees!
no subject
So, when he hears the shout from behind him, he turns to face Inuyasha.]
I'm already bendin' my knees! [He's just going to overly dramatically bend his knees in the water a bunch of times, scooping up water with every dip.] What's it look like I'm doin', yo?!
no subject
It looks like you've never caught a fish in your life!
[ Cue Inuyasha appearing with his legs spread apart in a squatting position. ]
Like this! And you're gunna scare the fish away doing that!
no subject
[He almost did. Once. But it was with the rod. Which is why we find him out here proceeding with this method.]
How's that any different from what I'm doin'?
[Which isn't wrong, Beat is squatting as well as soon as he stops the motion, hands apart, ready to scoop a fish or something similar up. He almost looks like a UFO catcher from a crane game in this pose.]
no subject
[ Oh brother this guys STINKS
but with another sigh he'll copy that almost crane-like position. It actually doesn't look too far off from what he was already doing, but clearly Beat's doing something wrong. ]
Pah! Maybe they know you're no good at this and don't even bother comin' round.
no subject
They passin' by, aight?! But they jus' keep slippin' outta my hands!
[As fish do. It's not long after when another swims by, small but colorful, which Beat attempts to scoop up. However, this one successfully swims away from his hands considering its size, leaving Beat empty-handed.]
Dammit, yo! What's a guy gotta do to catch one a' these?! [As he punches the water's surface, scaring off any other potential fish. Seems like Inuyasha was right about that part.]
no subject
He scowls, stomping a foot into the water and allowing the spread of it to get on Beat as well. ]
Well yellin' like that ain't gunna help! [ He's yelling, too. The fish are now no where in sight. ]
You've gotta let them come to you, idiot! So just shaddap and try again!
no subject
And boy does he look smug about it.]
no subject
Okay but why does Inuyasha look surprised like he didn’t just cause all of this. ]
Wh- what the hell was that!?
[ GOING TO SPLASH AT HIM BACK??? ]
no subject
[Yeah, we're still doing that.
And knowing the cats don't like water... Beat's just gonna do it again, sending a bigger splash towards Inuyasha.]
no subject
OKAY THAT’S IT— ]
I already told you…
[ His eyes darken at the second splash, already soaked to the bone. With ears angrily pulled back pushes back a sleeve ]
I’m not a caaat!!
[ and will suddenly TACKLE BEAT INTO THE WATER ]
no subject
The hell was that for!?
[But he doesn't give Inuyasha a chance to answer, this time diving towards him. How the turns have tabled.]
no subject
With a yelp he’ll extend his palm all the way out, shoving it against Beat’s face in an attempt to free himself. ]
Get the hell offa me!!
no subject
Miserable, fish-less, and soaked to the bone, he looks back at Inuyasha.]
If you's done messin' 'round, I'mma get back to catchin' fish. Ain't got no time for games.
[Seems like he's very serious about needing to catch one for one reason or another.]
fifty shades of slay
But he's absolutely not taking his shirt off! Who wants to see that?!]
Nope, I'm not taking mine off either. No one wants to see me without a shirt.
no subject
Why's we gotta do this anyway?
[The play member glances at both Nico and Beat, unamused by this whatever antics they are trying to pull. Didn't you read the novel? That's the reason why you signed up, isn't it?
Beat simply looks back at them, dumbfoundedly.]
Whatchu mean there's a novel?
no subject
I can't read very well. So I haven't read it.
[His dyslexia isn't as bad as Percy's, but he doesn't go out of his way to read. Mostly, he gets his education from ghost lectures. He's more of an auditory learner anyways.
He looks at Beat, thinking that more people would like to see the blond without a shirt than him. He grimaces as the play member continues to argue.]
Ugh. Fine! Just be prepared to tell me to put it back on!
no subject
Hold up, yo! You don't gotta do nothin' if you ain't down for it, aight?
[He's looking out for Nico, okay!
Then to play member:] Only one of us, right? If ain't gotta be both, I'mma do it instead!
no subject
But then he realizes, in weird teenage logic, that if he lets Beat take off his shirt, it'll look like he wanted to see Beat shirtless!
He starts to pull his shirt off.]
It's probably both of us.
[Grumbling, Nico pulls off his shirt. Other than being extremely pale, Nico's actually got some good muscle on him. And a lot of scars. Three particularly nasty ones over the back of his right shoulder and biceps.]
Happy?
Paint the Town
[The kid's...good. Really good. And as someone who took to sketching to learn how to connect with people while keeping his own abilities and self hidden, Darin can't help but be enchanted by what Beat is doing.]
[He wanders closer, looking over the in-progress mural.]
You know, I've seen some murals and paintings in my time but I don't think I've ever seen anything like this.
Do you plan it all out before you start spraying? Or do you just kinda go with the flow?
[He's genuinely curious. Usually, Darin approaches things with a sort of friendly enthusiasm that makes him seem more friendly and less invested but this? This has truly captured his attention. It's like you can see the sparks of creativity flickering in his green eyes.]
no subject
Depends what I'm feelin', you know? I do a bit a' sketchin' for the bigger stuff, but ain't like I follow all it either.
[He had started with sketching when he got into the hobby. It wasn't something, he was originally interested in but being synced up to someone who was artistically inclined sparked something in him.]
Last time I worked on a mural, I jus' kept addin' stuff to it when it felt right.
no subject
[Darin walks the length of the wall, admiring the art and technique. Everything Darin's always drawn has been realistic. Life-like. Even his imagined subjects and schematics all have a deeply real look to them. His focus was always on the little details. But this was...it felt, spur-of-the-moment. Spontaneous even if it was born from a sketch.]
...This is really good. I've never seen art like this...
[Darin almost sounds spellbound really.]
alarming fishing techniques
Zelda comes upon the unattended fishing rod and bait canister, but when she looks around, she doesn't find a fisherman nearby. That's... odd. With the sneaking suspicion that something is wrong, she decides to investigate further.
That's when she comes upon Beat crouching in the water, holding a pose that looks... kind of like something Ranma would do. Is Beat also a martial artist? He seems like he's really concentrating on something, so Zelda waits quietly for a chance to ask if he knows what happened to the owner of the fishing gear.
A few tense moments pass. Then, suddenly, Beat lunges forward into the water, causing Zelda to gasp in surprise. What-- What is he doing?? She stares wide eyed at the water until he finally resurfaces, clutching his wriggling prize. ]
Beat! Are you all right??
[ She hurries towards him to help.... although, with what, she has no idea. Is... is he holding a fish?? ]
1/2
Never in his life did he think he'd be attempting to catch fish this way. Which also meant he never thought fish would put up as much of a fight. He had fought shark noise in the past but fish? Clearly, fish proved to be the greater enemy in comparison.
He was already making his way back, holding the fish tight in between his hands, when he hears Zelda call out to him.]
Bwuh?
[And that is all the distraction the fish needs, flying out of his grip, slapping him across the face with its tail before it falls back into the water.]
2/2 this is so stupid, I'm sorry
[And, after being caught by surprise by that attack, Beat stumbles backwards into the water as well, sending up a huge splash in his wake.]
paint the town
it's kind of cool to catch beat at work today! don't mind him as he nosily picks up the sketchbook as beat works, looking at the revealed page with amusement. a dragonite, maybe? probably kieran's. his own dragonite is here with him, watching the artist at work. ]
You're really goin' all out for these, huh?
no subject
Music pours out of his headphones as he slips it off his head, a punk rock song with a catchy rhythm. If Drayton continues to leaf through the sketchbook, he'll find a few more Pokemon from their little island drawn, including one of Pasta on the silhouette of a skateboard deck.]
'Course I am, yo! Gotta make this place look good if that's what they's askin' for.
no subject
Sure thing. Good chance for all the artsy types to strut their stuff. Including you, 'course.
no subject
[It was something that he and Roxas has spoken about in passing since they started cleaning up the island. There was still a lot of work that needed to be done, such as getting a half-pipe, and maybe a couple of rails put in, but it would be good to finally have a place to skate close by.
But Drayton's comment makes Beat smile, a slight pull at the edge of his lips, less cocky than confident tone from earlier. His artistic side didn't exactly manifest on its own, after all.]
Wasn't really into this sorta thing at first, you know?
no subject
but the idea of the skate park is a good one. if it came to demolishing stuff or holding heavy things for installation, at least his pokemon could help with that. and it would really personalise their little island.
beat's follow-up has piqued his curiosity, though! even dragonite looks up from admiring her daughter's portrait. ]
Somethin' you learned? Got hit with some big inspiration?
no subject
Inspired's one way of lookin' at it, I guess.
[He squats down to reach for another spray can, looking through them for the color that he's looking for.]
Had a friend who was into this sorta thing back home. Started doin' a bit of it 'cause of him.
no subject
[ if there's a teasing tone in there, feel free to ignore it. drayton's well aware of beat's girlfriend, he's just a shit.
dragonite sets the sketchbook down carefully and comes over to peer at all the paint cans. ]
no subject
Huh?! [Did he just get redder? Yes. Yes, he did.] Yo, hold up, yo! Me an' Phones wasn't like that.
[Clearly this is more important than the spray cans and paint cans that Dragonite might be perusing at this time.]
no subject
Haha, dude, chill. I was only kiddin'. It's really cool to have friends who get you into stuff like this.
[ meanwhile dragonite is dipping a claw in some pink paint curiously. ]
no subject
Tch, then why'd you gotta make it sound like that, yo?
[He's still too preoccupied to realize what Dragonite is doing.]
