there's nothing better than this, right?
Who: Azul Ashengrotto and YOU
Status: Open
Where: The "shores" and general ocean area around Eltrut. (I'm so sorry to the sea turtle leviathan who has been exposed to this as I realized only now when making this player plot months ago)
What: Sea Witch of the Abyss player plot; forward dated closer to the end of January: Azul returns after spending the better part of the month in hiding... and has brought something back along with him to the surface.
Warnings: Tentacles, body horror-style description of blot and such due to magic corruption, emeto (but it's ink/blot), animalistic merfolk behavior + some mental instability on Azul's part, I will warn for anything else more specific if it comes up.
Today, the weather is as worst as it's ever been since the storm reports that were made back in December. Dark clouds, heavy rain, a rumble in the air of thunder... and eventually, that rumble seems to extend to the ground below, a sudden slight tremor under one's feet.
Because, close to the shores of Eltrut, where the waters have darkened the most since the recent ink-like sludge that's been found affecting the fish, something is happening. As if the sea is attempting to part and move out of the way of something large that is now approaching the surface. Reports will go out that anyone wishing to investigate can take a boat out or any other means of their choosing to try to find what it is, or at the very least be prepared in case it comes too close to Eltrut.
Eventually, something does indeed rise--a crown of silver-white hair that eventually reveals a dark figure hunched over, and then... tentacles. Eight large, massive tentacles that poke above the water and appear to be the source of the violent waves being formed. That ink-like sludge, or rather, blot, heavily coats the octomer that has now made themselves known. If it wasn't for the tentacles, and the head of the octomer above the water, one might think that this creature was just entirely made of this ink rather than an actual living entity. Some of it sloughs off and falls into the water, while other parts appear to have hardened and formed sharp spikey-like appendages sticking out of his upper back and arms. It almost seems like a miracle that they can even move under the weight of it.
Speaking of the head, that blot seems to have not yet quite completely consumed that one feature of this sea creature, as after a long moment, they roll their head back from their previously hunched over position. There's ink spilling down their face from the corners of their mouth and eyes, the latter of which has an almost glassy look to them as if not quite aware of his surroundings yet, but anyone who has ever seen or spoken to him before will still be able to recognize him immediately.
The missing Azul Ashengrotto, proprietor of the Mostro Lounge.
Azul's eyes are dazed as if he's barely woken up from a deep sleep, slow and heavy blinking, and shuddering from the weight of the blot as if trying to shake off a heavy coat that refuses to slide off his back. His mouth is closed, as if perhaps the blot is stuck like a heavy weight in his mouth too as he makes rumbling growls and noises. When he finally manages to open his mouth wider, and sure enough, a large amount of ink spills past his teeth and into the water below. Once the weight of ink has been dislodged, no longer clinging to his tongue and preventing his voice being heard, some of the dimness seems to fade from his gaze as a light of alertness seems to flicker back to life now. And then...
... He laughs.
He laughs, and laughs, and laughs, his tentacles writhing violently with the force of it, churning the blot-blackened water around him and sending harsh slaps of water spraying about. Any ships nearby rock dangerously as a result. A smile momentarily stretched so wide that it feels like his mouth and eyes are bleeding from the force of it. And even if he could think clearly right now, the sensation would make him want to laugh even harder in something almost like relief, because if he is bleeding, then it means that despite his efforts to hold back his overblot having failed, at least he is still alive, that he's still himself somewhere under the weight of blot dripping off of his person.
Despite his unsightly appearance, Azul Ashengrotto is still somewhere in the mass of hysteria, the noise that increases in intensity in the back of his mind, thousands of voices overlapping: lingering words of the people he had stolen from that had come attached to the powers that the rift tentacles had torn from and then shoved into the Phantom or Azul's own chest as a storage container for the time being. He had not been able to see anything while in the darkness of the ocean, but he did hear some things. The brief screams or choking of people when they were grabbed, the rage or sorrow from anyone that realized what was taken from them before the rift closed... before ultimately being silenced by the sea Azul had taken to hiding in.
But any disgust he has for himself for this act of thievery isn't enough to drown out the urge to take, and take, and take, until there's nothing left. Even though he thinks there isn't anything in this world that he even truly wants anymore: and if this world can't give him anything that he wants, if it cannot love him despite everything he has tried to do for this past year to appease it, then his only choice is to take it, and then sink it into the abyss where no light reaches. Or at the very least, allow itself to be used as a steppingstone in order to open the way back to the world he truly wants.
This thought, and his laughter, causes the water to suddenly churn again, harsher and harsher, a whirlpool with the force of an earthquake forming, until another even larger creature rises up from out of it. Something with the body of an octomer as well, except that its head has been replaced with what looks like a large jar of ink that's heavily cracked. Blot spills out between the cracks and down its body, into the water below, further staining Azul's hair where it towers large far and above even him despite Azul's own size right now. In its hands is a large, black trident, crackling with taboo magic.
The sky seems to darken further, rain and wind harsh, and when the trident raises to point toward the sky... lightning has finally arrived in threatening zigzags of light across the sky. And perhaps, for a very brief second, one might think they can see a slip of pitch darkness peeking out in a tiny pocket of the sky that the Phantom aims at with the prongs of the trident... is it trying to create a larger rift than the ones that had been showing up these past few weeks?
Either way, it should become clear to everyone immediately, no matter where you are witnessing this event, that this cannot continue.
[ooc: Welcome to the Overblot Boss Battle! There are two top levels below that will allow people to approach and fight off either The Phantom, or Azul himself! They are close enough to Eltrut that boats or flight can be used to quickly reach him, potions being provided for anyone who wants to try to go directly into the water at any point so that they can breathe underwater during the confrontation, or even attack from the shores/do whatever you can think of to compel Azul in particular into coming closer within range and dragged up onto the island proper if need be.
Anyone who also had any of their abilities taken by the Rift Tentacles this month will find that this is where they ended up, as both Azul and the Phantom may use anything from here that was volunteered while being confronted and will even try to continue stealing more from anyone they haven't yet that approaches. Players can choose to fight with a character having their own abilities/magic used against them as a result or punch the Phantom hard enough that the orbs of light containing people's powers are released and returned to their rightful owners. Even if no punching is done to the Phantom to make this happen, any and all powers/magic/abilities/etc that has been taken this past month will be returned instantly upon Azul and the Phantom's defeat. The blot that has been spilling into the water and affecting the sea life will also slowly disintegrate as well once Azul is defeated.
If you have any questions that are not answered here, in the toplevels below, or at the player plot post linked above, please let me know!!]

THE PHANTOM
looks suspiciously like Ursula from the end of the Little Mermaidhas been formed from the magic toxicity blot that Azul has been generating for the past few weeks in this place, and is trying to create an even larger Rift of Tentacles to do... probably nothing good. Normally, the Phantom will primarily use the large trident in its hands, its tentacles, or some of Azul's magic. (As seen here) However, because of the Rift Tentacles stealing people's skills and abilities for it and Azul to absorb, the Phantom will have access to any of these skills that were volunteered for the player plot post that anyone is welcome to reference in their threads while trying to fight this thing. Also, the Phantom will not leave the area it is situated in due to its massive size unless Azul is suddenly moved too far away from it. Only then will the Phantom attempt to move in order to remain close to Azul so that it can continue to feed off of his magic and emotions.I will not be declaring an overall winner in regard to who gets the "final blow" or the like in regard to the Phantom, as it will be more or less eventually considered defeated and will dissolve apart into nothingness upon Azul's defeat in his own toplevel below. However, people will still be needed to fight the Phantom to keep this thing from interfering too much in attempts to fight/calm Azul down and causing significant harm to Eltrut and its citizens with its attempts to open an even worse rift with the trident/summoning ferocious lightning and stormy weather--upon being attacked, it will stop doing these things in order to try to protect itself instead. Anyone who participates will be credited for the contribution in its demise.
Please feel free to go crazy, go stupid against this thing, basically. Consider this your chance for your character to fight a Kingdom Hearts style boss and brag about it later, no CR with Azul is necessary at all to participate. You can have threads teaming up with each other and by all means feel free to handwave what the Phantom is doing in your thread, you have my blessing. (However, if you need me to chime in as the Phantom at any time if it'll make things easier to move threads along, let me know) If you have any questions, hit me up on the player plot post linked above or shoot me a PM!]
Kaveh - OTA
Given how much he is cussing, he's not exactly pleased with being delayed, so maybe help an architect out here? Or just stand clear of the explosives he's generating, he literally cannot help it.]
one annoyed trophy husband
At least wait for me first instead of running off on your own. [Alhaitham hisses as he turns to his husband, looking none too pleased with the situation, as one should feel when one of the people Kaveh is so desperately trying to help turns out to be something bigger than a thorn at the side.
Why does he keep landing himself in these situations?!]
literally not his fault this time!!!
[Kaveh growls a little bit, but he's clearly more agitated with the situation than he is with Alhaitham, and he is pretty sure that's obvious. He is giving those extraordinarily large tentacles a baleful look.]
This thing is in my way.
[Which probably means Alhaitham doesn't have long to come up with something before Kaveh gets...creative.]
are you sure about that

so listen I know this is the phantom top-level but I suddenly had an evil idea and could not resist
Like now, for example. His eyes are glassy with ink and tears and magic overuse, so when he vaguely registers the smaller entity moving fast in his peripheral vision, he turns to look up at Shadow rather intently, as if trying to make sense of what he's looking at here. Not making to move to defend the Phantom from Shadow's attacks, instead just... staring, for some reason.
That is, until a name suddenly slips out of Azul's mouth.]
... Surge-san...?
[Well. That's definitely not the correct vaguely hedgehog-shaped person he's thinking of here while trying to recognize who this is, now is it.]

Ulpianus - OTA (but also like... he's not doing much. or anything.)
... But he doesn't need to, does he? He can see others who are throwing themselves into the fray. His eyes dart around, seeking a familiar figure - and, yes, he can spot that boy in red. He'd claimed to be able to handle it, and had warned Ulpianus to not get involved.
His fighter's instinct, honed over the decades, urges him to join the fight. His fingers twitch over the handle of his anchor... and then he simply thrusts it into the shore before him, hands resting on the handle like a knight standing vigil. All he does is observe, almost dispassionately, oblivious of the rain and waves washing over him.

[Close to the shore as he often is, Erichthonios just hadn't happened to be by this particular shoreline today. A fit of bad luck, or mayhap good, considering he runs into someone clearly watching the scene unfold--and someone he just so happens to be acquainted with.]
Have you noticed any behaviors? Anything at all that might help?

Nothing out of the ordinary for a creature that size. Its blows are slow, but devastating. It focuses on its strikes and does not pay enough attention to its surroundings. That can be of use. However...
[ He turns his head to wherever Riddle is right now. ]
It is not the source.

Erichthonios – OTA/Fight Planning
As the light fades, his form has changed. He who stands is no longer a tall man clad in flowing robes of black—but a figure clad in gleaming gold armor and wrapped in a plethora of silver-hued chains.]
…Ah. Smaller than usual. But no matter—I can still separate you!
[Energy building from within into his yet outstretched fist, he slams it unto the water's surface, aethereal chains shooting out in every direction, bending to create the borders of a space to seal off with spatial containment magicks – those within free to fight the large phantom at will, and those without free to attend to the true source of their predicament. The spell, Shining Cells, is aptly named, for in addition to sealing off the area, there now exist a series of glows beneath the waters – fire and light energies in abundance, easily triggered to surge should he so desire it.]
((note: anyone is welcome to create subthreads here with their own fights if you want to play with the arena change with another player; fire and light users will find friendly energies to draw from—think of it as a potential buff))

Thanks, mate, this should give us a bit more time to deal with this mess.
[And since it's in water... Well, what better than with some lightning, eh?]
How long can you hold it?
Fenris - OTA
And, though he’s got the potion to breathe safely swimming is not his forte. One chance encounter with a tentacle goes wrong, and knocks him into deeper water.
Fenris wants to get back up and go for another swing at the Phantom. But his sword is unfortunately large, and the water, current, and sheer amount of ink he’s found himself in is making it difficult. So, at the moment, his best is flailing and cursing as he tries his best to reorient himself.]

Don't flail about.
OPEN (will match format)
Channelling his indignation into monstrous arms of his own, he is currently grappling with some tentacles in an odd game of tug o' war.
Wild magic flies around him. Arcane circles flash with no obvious pattern to those unfamiliar. Emet-Selch growls as he concentrates his attacks upon the darkness of the rift.
"Whoever you are, hiding there in the dark, I'll pull you into the light!"
Sherlock - OTA, noncombative
The Phantom snaps its fingers to summon smaller tridents made of a familiar, sickly sea-green light to rain upon attackers and bystanders. Unlike Sherlock's own magic--at the level he knows--these light tridents have a form and cut swaths into the sails of nearby ships, even felling a mast or two. Light projections of sea creatures grapple with those above deck and attempt to toss them into the ocean. (Sherlock didn't tell anyone he lost his light magic from a tentacle attack. He thought he could just wait until the next month to reapply the tattoo. It shouldn't have mattered. His light magic is harmless!)
In Sherlock's mind, he's no longer on Eltrut but in a world with impossible scenery where the universe presses in from all sides. He seems to lose all color. His eyes turn eerily pale as if he's gone blind. Sherlock is in no condition to help. He grips his head in pain, muttering words he knows not their meaning. ]

Fortunately, though, none of this hits quite as close to home for him as it does for Sherlock. The White Gull River was free of cephalopods.
While he isn't happy, he's present enough to notice how distressed the other man looks. And to be especially concerned by those eyes and that chanting. ]
...Sherlock?
[ He'll reach to touch his shoulder, a little warily. ]
THE SEA WITCH
Unlike the Phantom, however, Azul can in fact still speak and think for himself, so aside from fighting him into submission, if one really wants to try to take the risk of talking him down... well. Be prepared for that to not be an easy feat, but you are welcome to try, though bear in mind that the blot is making him a bit out of sorts. Can a poor, unfortunate soul like yourself really be able to make a deal, or defeat a Sea Witch with only words while he's in this state?
(Anyone can tag Azul and try to fight/talk to him, but only CR will succeed in getting him to do as much talking for very long. If anyone has any questions about this, feel free to let me know!)]

What Kaveh does know is this; the longer this goes on, the more danger Azul's in, especially as people rightfully defend themselves. And even if he isn't severely injured, the more damage Azul does right now...Kaveh doesn't believe that won't weigh on the octomer when he's returned to his normal self. The phantom is also a problem--one he has told his husband to help keep out of his way because Kaveh has work to do.
Work to do, but not exactly a clear path to it--unlike some of us, Kaveh can't walk on water, and he's not exactly keen to use up all of Mehrak's power to float over. Right now, he's opted for wading in knee-deep and shouting, at the top of his lungs.]
AZUL!
[The volume he got on that yell would probably be more impressive if his voice didn't rise an octave when he's pissed. Ah well.]
no subject
[ Della had been with Azul since she first came to this crazy world, and as a result, she trusted him with her life. He'd been there for her, helped her at her lowest, and... ultimately, she'd been the reason he'd been hiding so much of himself. That very first day they met... if she hadn't reacted with utter disgust and horror at the inker's tentacles, would any of this have happened? It's a question that's going to haunt her for some time.
But guilt isn't going to solve any problems right now. The boy needs help, the boy needs to stop, and Della Duck doesn't know how to give up. ]
Ugh! There's no way he can hear us from all the way down here... how do we get in closer without getting smashed to bits?!
no subject
[The floating suitcase following Kaveh makes a sad face and sadder beeps. Carrying a grown man through the storm and giant angry ink tentacles was not what she was designed for. (Not pictured: alhaitham, just off screen, slapping tentacles away from Kaveh.) But he pauses to look down at Della, and an idle thought occurs to him.
She's a lot smaller than a full-grown man.]

On top of that, this object simply wasn't made for it; the enchantment on his broom is flimsy at best, unlike the equipment at NRC, it wasn't built with the intent to take such potent magic, there's no telling how long it will hold, or if the whole thing will simply collapse from the strain mid-flight. But it has to hold. This is all Riddle has, and he has to reach his destination. He MUST.
To think Azul would suffer a second overblot... Leona had warned the Heartslabyul Housewarden of such, and yet, despite all evidence to the contrary, Riddle had wanted to hope, for once, that he was wrong.
There's no ignoring what's in front of him now. Practically no one could, not with a Phantom of such massive size. And it's power; Riddle can feel the surge of magic as he approaches.]
"..It brings me no joy to see you like this." [He murmurs, taking a moment to steady his balance while he retrieves his pen, the red gem already alight with the gathering magic.]
"The sentence first.. The verdict after.."
[There's only one thing to do. Quick, brutal. Efficient. He'll aim to end this in one stroke.]
"AZUL!!" [Riddle thunders as magic crackles around him, his voice powerful, even against the noise of the surrounding elements competing against him. One hand grips the broom as the other aims his mage pen defiantly.
One second is all he'll give, enough time to look, not enough to defend; because maybe, just maybe if the second year he knows is still in there at all, he'll let this happen.]
"OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!"
no subject
But now he sees the red-headed housewarden on a broom, and for a moment, it looks like Azul is about to actually smile, despite the ink still dripping down his face--if Riddle is here, did that mean that at least one of the rifts had actually succeeded in connecting to Twisted Wonderland? Malleus also seems to have vanished, so perhaps Malleus used one to return back while one brought Riddle here in turn... if that's the case...
He opens his mouth, Riddle's name forming on his lips--and then he suddenly feels a weight snap around his neck. His eyes go wide, hands automatically coming up to his neck to try to feel for whatever it is that's suddenly pressing against his throat... and comes across a familiar ornate collar. Riddle's signature spell.
The Phantom is still moving unimpeded somewhere in the background in the middle of dealing with others, but Azul goes completely still for a few seconds. Even any magic he had been in the middle of using completely stops, as if the collar has perhaps flipped off some invisible switch on his magic casting... and then he starts screaming. A pure, animalistic scream of rage as he starts clawing his hands as hard as he can at the collar around his neck, because how dare Riddle try to collar him, how dare he show up only to try to get in his way like this...!]
Get it off, get it off, get it off, get it off, GET. THIS. OFF. OF. ME!!
[His tentacles flail wildly, including at least two that start trying to make a grab for Riddle in the air or throw him off that broom while his hands, and another tentacle, try to worm it's way under the collar and rip it apart--to which, Riddle will hear more than see a very loud cracking as the collar can be heard indeed starting to splinter from the efforts of Azul using not only blot but mer strength to try to break the damn thing.]
no subject
Riddle wishes he could say he was faring the same. Maintaining all of his focus on the spell, while also trying to keep up the flight enchantment is a challenge to say the least. Doing this on a broom was not optimal but if he keeps this up for long enough he should be able to cut off the phantom. It's working--!
Until its not.
There's little chance for Riddle to react or even gauge what went wrong. Azul's fury is overwhelming-- no fury is the wrong word, it isn't just anger coloring these screams, if anything this almost sounds closer to PANIC.
Riddle swerves out of the way, once, twice, as one tentacle bats at him and the other chases. He can see it, the collar actually fracturing. That can't be! Is the tattoo of this world not acting as a proper conduit? He's seen his collar deflected, or fail to take, but for it to actually be splintering is--!
He boldly moves back in.]
"You've overblotted Azul! Calm yourself!! Cease this-- at once! Ngh!"
[A tentacle barely clips him but he dares to try and get closer, to keep within Azul's line of sight.]
"Stop this!"

[Because in the end, they're all hypocrites, aren't they?
Except Leona is far more familiar with Azul's Overblot than any others right now, including Riddle. For once, the moment he did want to try to get a hold of the lizard, he's gone. And well, that doesn't necessarily make it easier in the end, does it?
Not that it matters.
Because the lion managed to be here, staff in hand, and eyes narrowed in a way when Leona actually has to put in the effort.]
Always had to make a grand entrance, don't you? Think Vil's rubbed off on you.
