What: AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES. Also Lucanis is trying to decide if he should get a tattoo or not.
Warnings: Probably nothing much, apart from the usual vague talk about their respective trauma because this is them. Will update if necessary.

[ Naturally, the first thing Lucanis does as Neve takes him to her apartment, is note the security in place, as well as any and all exits. This is as natural to him as breathing. ]

The stairwell makes a good choke point. And you can climb out the window if need be?

[ It's not paranoia when you're a professional assassin. ]

[ she expects nothing less from him, if she's honest. seeing him immediately take in the exits and everything else is a breath of familiarity in an unfamiliar world. she still needs to find them a coffeemaker of some sort, but that will come in time.

she does, however, pull out a spare wine bottle, leftover from... a mourning period recently, and pours them both a glass. one she offers to him. it won't be anything he's used to, but it's a red. might be good enough. ]

If necessary. Could be worse. Could somehow be smaller. Does it meet some of your standards at least?

[ they'll get to the rest of their conversation at some point. they're the type to make their way around, hitting important topics as they come. ]

It's fine.

[ Lucanis shrugs. He doesn't have strong opinions about the size of the place, or the decor, or anything like that. ]

There aren't too many points of egress, which is good. And the cats - [ He's still wrapping his head around the cats, but - ] they are lookouts? Would tell you if someone suspicious was approaching?

It's a work in progress.

[ the cats aren't indoor cats, so at least he doesn't have to worry too much about them. or at least, they aren't her cats, so they won't stay indoors with her. but they trust her enough to scream at the door or somehow make noise. she's a light enough sleeper she'll hear. ]

But yeah, I can ask them to. One might stand guard with enough reward promised, but I don't ask them unless there's need.

[ she'll ask them to keep an eye out for spite, though, and come running for her if necessary. ]

They bring me information when I go looking for them. That's their main job. Sometimes they seek me out. I suspect they'd warn me if they didn't like someone approaching. I'll make sure they know you're a friend.

[ Lucanis nods thoughtfully. ]

How did you acquire this ability, again? I can't deny its usefulness, it just seems - unusual.

[ she's in the process of hanging up her coat when he asks and one of her hands lifts to her chest, where she knows one of her tattoos rests just under her shirt. ]

It's another one of the tattoos, like the ones that unlock magics we already have. You've probably noticed that you and Spite can't use the magics or even some abilities you used to. It was the same for me. Still can't sense the Fade here, but before I couldn't even pull on my magic. It was like the thread connecting me to it had been severed.

[ she had already experienced that once before, when she'd lost the connection to her healing. to have it encompass all of her magic? it was like losing a limb.

Wasn't sure I wanted to go through with it at first. Never know who might use something like this to track or control us. Lace convinced me in the end. Not convinced it's fully safe, but I've kept my eye on both tattoos since I got them.

[ Lucanis sits, near the window, keeping a good view of the room, of Neve, of the door. He rubs the bridge of his nose, as though he’s got a headache. In a way, he does. Its name is Spite. ]

I’ve never had any magical talent. And, before all this, I would’ve said I had no need of it. But Spite - it’s difficult to describe what he’s feeling. Incomplete, maybe.

[ His mouth twists, because talking about this isn’t his favorite thing, but to give her an idea of what he means - ]

When Spite was first - put into me, it was similar. Forcibly cut off from the Fade, he was upset, frustrated. This is like that, but worse, in some way. He’s contained, maybe, but not in any way that is good for me.

So I’m reluctant to get this tattoo, but I’m not sure I can avoid it.

Plus - we have a deal, he and I.
