-ELTRUT RECONSTRUCTION-
[The Garuda assault really did a number on poor Eltrut. He'd seen powerful storms before back in his bayside hometown, but this was a complete disaster. With so much damage, it was the least Darin could to to try and help out where he can with his particular skillset. He's making and replacing tools to help with the reconstruction effort and often times he's working on rebuilding himself. He's doing his best to look like he's still recovering...which means he's taking lots of breaks so no one gets particularly suspicious considering he was probably seen duking it out with Garuda in the skies above the city and out over the open water. Hopefully no one's eyes are that good but he's still trying to act like he's in worse shape than he actually is.]
-LIFE IN COLOUR-
[In the interest in 'diversifying his portfolio' a bit, Darin's decided to take the job regarding the recent spate of disappearances and vanishings. It doesn't take long to see the connection to the painter's house on Atnam, so naturally he's there to check it out.]
[He knocks on the door several times before he just shrugs and lets himself inside where he stops pretty much cold.]
...Okay. Something definitely happened here. I know artists can be eccentric but this is going a little far...
[He looks around, examining the room before taking a cautious step inside.]
Now...where to start...
-STARSHIPS-
[Now here was a job posting Darin could get excited about. Sailing the ocean? Making star charts? Potentially discovering new constellations?? He couldn't sign up fast enough!]
[The sun is on the horizon and dusk is fast approaching. Darin's currently doing some checks on the boat he'd rented while waiting to see if anyone else decided to show up.]
Man, if I discover a new constellation, I wonder what I'll name it...? "Hammerfall?" Oh..! How about "The Solar Forge?" This is gonna be so great...!
-GOLD & GEARS-
[One might expect someone as boisterous as Darin to be acting as a sort of carnival barker; promoting these very well-crafted pieces of jewelry and assorted accessories. And normally, you'd be right. But the concept of magitech has fascinated the smith to the point where he can't focus on promoting anything. He's trying on everything he can; every ring, every bauble, every necklace and, after demonstrating and witnessing what it's capable of, sits down and promptly starts to sketch the item into a notebook with several detailed pages on how it even works. When he's not sure of something, he's asking every question he can possibly think of.]
[Finally, he turns a page in his notebook and stops.]
Damn, I already filled this one up? I gotta get another...
-THE GREAT ESCAPE-
[He's got no idea how he got here, but Darin's sure not happy about it. According to a note he had pinned to himself, he was captured and incarcerated for "Disturbing the peace with loud hair." The note was summarily shredded and now Darin's wandering his holding cell in clear annoyance. Where the hell was he? How'd he get picked up?]
Damn...well, no sense sitting here wasting time. I gotta get out of here.
[He heads over to the wall and pulls an arm back, aiming to punch right through the wall with his bare fist. Which cracks harshly on the wall and does...all of nothing. Nothing except cause Darin to yell in pain and start cursing. That must look really strange to anyone else imprisoned here.]
WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! WHY CAN'T I PUNCH THROUGH?!
-GET SHIRTY-
[You know, considering he spent some time on the lam, maybe brushing up on some of his disguise work might not be such a bad idea. After all, he was technically a corsair which meant he might need to be a little less...outwardly obnoxious? Either way, it sounded like a good way to kill a day and something fun to boot.]
Okay, so...we gotta switch clothes and just act like one another? Seems easy to me.
[Already unfastening the long periwinkle blue, sleeveless coat he wears, Darin turns to whoever is unfortunate to be accompanying this 6'3" wall of smithing muscle.]
What are you waiting for? We gotta change.
no subject
[He offers the man a playful grin as he motions for him to follow. So far so good...it's clear.]
So we need to add commandeering a ship to the list of things we need to do. Shouldn't be too hard.
[Though getting through without causing a ruckus might be harder.]
...Hey, if this is some sort of prison island...they'd need a place to house the guards, right? A barracks or something...
no subject
Aye, just a matter of finding it. What are you thinking?
no subject
[Darin was raised in a port town and he knows his way around most ships.]
But, if we find a barracks we can find some uniforms. We act like we're wanted back in Eltrut, find a ship with a small crew. Then, when we're in the shallows, we send 'em packing and take the ship back ourselves.
Hell, I don't know how paladins do things here but if there's a guard house, we can find some old paperwork. Make it look official.
no subject
Clever plan. Aye, that would work better in our favor, and with this prison as large as it is, a disguise is better than wandering around as we are. It would be easier if we took down a few guards and steal what they wear, but bit more effort and risk the noise. So I say we try your plan.
no subject
[Darin tries to creep as well as he can, but at 6'3" and well-muscled, his steps aren't as light as he'd like them to be.]
[It takes some time, but fortunately the barracks is close to the prison. They just need to pass through an open yard to get there.]
...Not a fan of how open this place is.
no subject
Especially when they have those sentries there.
[A nod up to the walls where a few figures could be seen.]
A distraction would be nice, but a tall order... And not much coverage I can see. Should we try to find another way to go around?
LMAO ONE BACKSLASH RUINED MY TAG
[With no gear, no tools, and no powers, Darin was at the most extreme of disadvantages.]
Another way around would take too long and there's no guarantee we'll even find anything...
[Come on, Darin. Think...there had to be a way. There didn't seem like there were that many sentries. Considering the shackles on their wrists and how it stripped them of their abilities, the guard presence didn't need to be especially heavy.]
...Wait.
[Darin kneels and takes grabs a loose stone. He does a quick scratching of the yard layout and marks where the sentries are then draws conical shapes signifying fields of view.]
[He picks up some loose stones, five or six in hand, light enough to be thrown a fair distance.]
...How good of a shot are you?
no subject
A fling levin bolts for a living, I'd say my throwing arm is better than most.
no subject
[Darin hands over a handful of stones to Cid.]
Here's my plan.
[He gestures, in a specific order, to each guard lining the walls.]
If you can toss these stones to draw their line of sight away from the courtyard, in order, I should be able to make it through. Then, when I'm on the other side, I do the same thing. It's gonna be tight, but if we move fast, and accurately enough, we should be able to get across...
Thoughts?
no subject
I have to admit, sounds a bit dodgy... But that's exactly what we need to do.
[He lightly tosses each of the stones one by one to get a decent feel of them before he nods.]
Just say the word, and I'll get you through.
no subject
[Darin pushes himself to his feet, his own hand full of stones. He doesn't want to think about the other risk here: that the door on the far side of the yard was locked. One hurdle at a time.]
Alright, let's go.
[Darin nods and starts to move, quickly and carefully, keeping his eyes peeled for any changes in the guards' line of sight.]
no subject
[And with that, Cid gets in position to stay out of sight before throwing the stones as planned, aiming at a place that would divert their attention. He doesn't even have to use all the stones as some will join the others. But it's at least working, so Darin better book it!]
no subject
[When he's successfully across, he starts to whip his own stones about, distracting the guards who, at this point, likely think they're under attack by stone bees or something.]
[Fortunately, the far door is unlocked and Darin slips inside quickly, gesturing for Cid to do the same.]
no subject
Once inside and the door shut safely, he lets out a low breath.]
Been a while since I had to take such evasive maneuvers. But your plan worked.
[He then looks back forward and grins recognizing the layout.]
And looks like we're right near where we need to be. Barracks shouldn't be far from here.
no subject
Thank the gods. Never realized how much I would miss my abilities before now. Hell, most of my life I wish I never even had them.
[He moves quickly down the corridor, checking around angles as deftly as he can until finally, the barracks doors are in sight.]
Finally. Hopefully we can get a key or something for these cuffs in there too. That'll really make things easier.
no subject
Really not used to it, eh? I know my knack is handy to get things done quick, but it's good to experience a more "humble" way of living.
[He steps slightly ahead when they reach the door, listening before pushing the door open to reveal the empty barracks.]
While I doubt the keys would be in here, we might be able to use something else to use.
no subject
[Darin steps in after Cid and looks around. Seems like he was right— this barracks had plenty of equipment. Enough that they could find some uniforms and a back to carry their things in.]
Alright so...we grab some spare uniforms, pack our things, and hope we get to the boat off of this island without people scrutinizing too much?
no subject
[Cid is already walking through, not really caring too much as he looks and rummages, trying to find something that could work to break these shackles. Even a crowbar would do...]
And judging from where these barracks are...
[He stops by the window, making sure he stays out of sight as he peers out.]
Way to the ships is fairly straightforward, and the uniforms will make it easier to get through.
no subject
[He starts pulling out what he can find and holding them against his broad frame.]
That's good. I've been around soldiers and guards enough to be able to play the part. We just need to hope the perimeter of the island is heavily guarded by ships. I really don't feel like swimming back to Eltrut.
no subject
[Still searching.... Oh well this will do. Rummaging through some belongings, he finds a set of lockpicks that should do just fine for getting these pesky bands off.]
But here.
[He lifts them up.]
I'll take off yours.
no subject
[Once they're unlocked, Darin can feel a surge of his strength flowing back in one powerful blast.]
Oh man...that's so much better.
[Darin takes hold of Cid's shackles and snaps them with his newly returned strength.]
[But he pauses for a moment with the broken shackles in hand.]
...I think I wanna take a set of these.
no subject
What for?
no subject
You can't tell me something like that wouldn't be useful. If that giant bird attacked again or something? Maybe we can stop something like that before things got out of hand.
Could help a lot of people if we figured out how they worked.
no subject
Might need more than some pretty bracelets for a creature as large as that, but I understand your idea. Likely has some kind of special sealing magic to seal off or block the magic from the tattoos, and perhaps other sources of magic of this world.
no subject
[Darin turns the wristlets over in his hands thoughtfully before snagging a bag and cramming them in. He can puzzle them later.]
Anyway, I'm already feeling like my old self again. We shouldn't have any more trouble getting off this damn island.
