Their reasons are somewhat similar, but the manner in which they hide themselves could not be more different. Link suppressed his emotions until he became as stone; Darin shaped himself into someone else entirely.
Over time (and helped in large part by amnesia), the stone cracked and the real Link began to shine through. Perhaps someday Darin will discard his mask. He has allowed Zelda to see beneath it, to glimpse the truth of who he is. If only she could, she would snatch that mask away from him and throw it into the sea. But she can't be the one to remove it; Darin has to do so in his own time.
