A: It's, ah... different than what I imagined. [ There is magitek in her own world, yes, but the kind from Milites are made more for war. Over the years, she's seen the empire produce a great number of terrifying machines, ranging from the artillery mounted on stealthy flying mechs, to colossal structures that transport resources over their frozen tundra, to chilling devices meant to negate the power of the Crystals themselves. Ordinary devices-- such as lightbulbs-- needn't have magic power them.
So, imagine her surprise when she's presented with the prototype above a workstation table, that of a lamp. Rem leans over, examining the metal fastenings that hold the contraption together. One of the researchers mentioned using a bone substrate for some of their magitek, and there it is, right in the center of the glass: the assembled skeleton of a fish. Her eyes lift upward, uncertainly, to meet yours, and she gives you a dubious smile. ] If we power it with magic, you don't think it'll make this room smell like fish, do you?
B: [ Afterwards, she lingers in the building, looking through one of the display windows of the latest magitek to come from the scientists' developments. This one appears to be an automatic sorter for coins of some sort. ] I don't suppose that, somewhere, instead of magitek research, there is... a purely magical researcher?
[ There are archives upon Elah, she's heard. Perhaps she can find something of use there, even if she is not a Paladin. ]
Leap of Faith (General)
[ You. Her. A cliff above, the fresh, cerulean lagoon below, and in case there were any doubts as to who is the more forthwith in their trust, Rem is already sprinting past you and leaping off the edge. What was that about taking turns of one remaining below and one leaping off? Or that one must be from a different armada? Too late, she's jumped.
Rem plunges into the water, clothes and all, with a spectacular splash, causing modest waves the ripple out like the petals of a lotus. Within seconds she surfaces, tossing her brown hair then swiping the remaining strands back from her face. While the distance between the surface and the top of the cliff might be too great to actually see her expression, her voice carries what can only be a wide, relieved grin. Her words are quick and enthusiastic, charged with excitement. ]
Come on! It's your turn, it is! [ To a weary body, the warm, tropical water is beyond soothing to her. She tilts her head back and floats some meters to the side, making room for you to join. Raising an arm, she beckons you. Let's see your best splash. ]
Healing Mix-up (General)
[ It seems that both you and her have decided to consult the poster of the quest at the same time, and let's just say that as a preview of the reward, one snippet of the novel has been shared. For inspiration, of course, because who wouldn't want to start their noble quest of gathering bat drippings, dragon scales, monkey flakes, and cat knuckles without knowing a taste of the prize that comes after?
By the time Rem finishes reading the first two sentences of the paragraph, she's already turned a bright pink. An audible gasp escapes her, and she jerks back, clasping her mouth with her hands. Oh no. (Oh yes?) Oh no, it's one of those books, and, Crystals, just reading that much feels as if she's intruded on something private. She's not sure whether to laugh or to apologize. ] A fair warning, even that paragraph is... [ Still sporting a bright shade of red upon her cheeks, Rem lowers her voice to a conspiratorial level. ] spicy.
[ Well, she's here now. She's here because she needs to have a healer on standby for herself, she needs a good one, and dammit, she will get those ingredients to put her in good favor with a healer (the book is just a plus, shh, no she's totally not interested in it). ]
Gallows Gambit (Corsair but OTA)
[ The shackles around her hands are not the sturdiest of things, but then again, she can't imagine them being made for anything else but to constrain and intimidate. Quality isn't really a thing when it comes to ironworks used against prisoners. With a soft sigh, she tests their weight, clinking the metal against the iron bars of the cell in which she's held.
All her life, she's managed to escape being a prisoner of war (not ture, a gut feeling tells her, but she cannot remember when or where or how it ever was, only that someone died, long, long ago)-- ah. Blinking once, she shakes her head from an oncoming headache, deciding to refocus on the task at hand. How ironic is it that she willingly gets herself put in chains in order to find the paladin behind this mess? Mission accomplished on that one, if only partly. She now has a face and a voice, attached to the man, but not his name. Unfortunately, now she's stuck with another problem. She must escape. It's not the most difficult thing to do should she do so by magic and force, but it would be better to not draw attention at all.
Rem peers through the bars, looking at what awaits her if she doesn't: a guillotine. A semi-public execution, then? Not only that, but the swiftness of the steel against a neck is by far one of the most humane methods she's ever seen. Relatively, anyway. Neither Rubrum nor Milites would bother.
Maybe you're here to help her escape. Maybe you're in the cell with her. Maybe you're one of the gallows' hired help knowing she's been falsely accused, willing to set her free. Either way, she asks a simple question: ] You wouldn't happen to know the time...?
Untilted Goose Gambit
[ This is embarrassing. The eight-headed goose that is supposed to be the bounty she's after has, in fact, made her a victim of its shenanigans already! There it goes, waddling off with what appears to be a silver necklace of some sort. ] Get back here!
[ Rem rushes after the goose. Help her, maybe? Or maybe laugh at her. Or maybe you've also had something stolen by one of the other heads. ]

For dfqc
In this nexus of worlds, Rem had found herself not only without that medication, but also without any idea of what its equivalent would be. After succumbing once more to her cough due to the drain imposed by the cursed tombstone, she began seeking a solution as soon as she was able to walk.
Painted glass chimes ring as she leaves a rather sketchy, dilapidated storefront in Nogard. Just outside its stoop, she adjusts all the flasks of medication, vials of powders, ampules of potions, and bottles of poultices she’s acquired into an already over-filled satchel. Slinging it over her shoulder, Rem steps down onto the cobblestone street and withdraws her coin purse, dumping its meager contents into the palm of her hand. There’s not enough to stop at one more apothecary or healer to stock up on yet another foreign treatment, legitimate or otherwise. And, unfortunately, she’ll try anything at this point.
Putting away the pouch with a disappointed sigh, she looks up only to see a familiar face belonging to none other than Dongfang Qingcang, Moon Supreme. ]
Oh…! [ Out of surprise, her hand tightens upon the strap of the satchel, but she relaxes almost immediately. Her voice, hoarse from strain, is nonetheless kind as she greets him. ] Good afternoon, Moon Supreme. I didn’t expect to see you in this part off port…
Re: For dfqc
Daqiang's eyes darted over Rem, who looked - and sounded - terrible compared to normal. He noticed the money in her hands and the bag on her shoulder as well. Rather than greeting her back like a normal person would, he walked up to her and grabbed the shoulder strap of her satchel to pull it off of her so he could hold it and look inside.]
What is all this? Are you wasting your money purchasing groceries for that charlatan again? How foolish.
no subject
What—? No! [ She sounds as indignant as she looks.
Whether or not she succeeds in stopping him from prying, he’ll probably tell from a single glance that the contents are an eclectic assortment of medicines, legitimate or otherwise, used for coughs and sore throats. ] It’s nothing!
no subject
Daqiang holds the bottle he snatched up over his head and examines it while he secures his hold on the bag's strap and holds the bag out in the other direction with his other arm. Forcing her to choose which one to go after first. However, regardless of which she does, he will begin moving that arm away from her, spinning as needed to 'play keep away' while he investigated the pill bottle.]
This feels like yang energy. If this is for you, you should use something with yin if you want it to be more effective.
no subject
…Only to miss and the exertion is definitely not what she needs right now. Rem’s hand lowers to her mouth, turning as she coughs. It’s an harsh, grating sound, but she manages to stop, asking: ] Um, …”yin”?
[ Neither terms are familiar— perhaps it’s something unique to his world, but she’s willing to try anything. Steadying her rocky breath, she looks up at him.
Don’t misunderstand, she’s totally not admitting that she’s unwell!! She’s just curious. Yes, that’s it. Tell her about yin and yang…! ]
no subject
Why are you not taking care of yourself?
[He brings the bag back around to his chest and drops the first bottle inside before digging through it for one that feels like it has yin energy in it. He sets the bag on the ground after pulling out the first one he finds. He gives the bottle a shake - pills - and holds it out to her.]
You are a woman and your spiritual root is unknown, but more likely to be yin than yang as you are able to carry the souls of the dead within you. Yin is cold, passive, and feminine. The natural disposition of women who have not awakened their immortal root.
[He does her the favor of lowering his voice as he speaks so that their conversation remains with them since she had gotten so upset the last time he brought up her ability in public. It does not make him sound any less like he is scolding her, however.]
Medicine and foods that align with yin will help you recover faster than those that align with yang. Yang will only bring your energies further out of balance and upset your body.
no subject
As he explains, the concept of this "yin" and "yang" becomes clearer. It is a balance of sorts, and it seems that he believes there is some sort of imbalance within her, thus causing her current state. He even offers a suggestion, and so she's caught between two options. The first is her default, a tried and true method she's always used, that of insisting on her adequate health. The second is to inquire further, if only because he's offering some sort of insight she has never explored.
Perhaps there is a way to marry the two options. ] ...You're being silly, Moon Supreme. [ Her tone is light enough to be dismissive, but she does reach for the bottle of pills he holds, betraying her interest. ] Would someone who doesn't take care of themselves be out buying all these things?
[ Just don't ask her how she got to this point. ] It's nothing to worry about.
no subject
[He reaches down and picks up the bag, then takes her by a wrist and begins walking, intending to lead her away from the store and somewhere he could more easily search through her belongings.]
Come. There are too many yang remedies in this bag. You must be educated.
no subject
Seeing that she is curious to offer some other alternative, supplemental, or magical medical advice... she decides that this is worth listening to. Furthermore, she's recovered this much to walk outside. She shouldn't have to continue to drain then seize the phantoma of every rat, pigeon, or other vermin of Nogard that hops on her windowsill to try to heal herself. Every step forward is a step stronger, she's certain (she hopes). ]
...Crystals, you walk fast. [ She comments, attempting to smooth her tone to something more casual. ]
no subject
Once they were at a pace she could keep up with, he led her down a couple streets, turning occasionally. It would likely become clear he was heading for one of the apartment blocks riftfarers had been assigned in relatively short order as he released her hand to open a creaky gate to an out-of-the way courtyard. The building had four levels while most of the others surrounding it had only two or three. Truly, a palace among mudpiles.]
This venerable one has been provided the uppermost chambers. Will you be able to take the stairs or will you need assistance?
no subject
"Chambers" is such an archaic, grand word for what is ultimately a place in the slums. The juxtaposition between the term and reality is amusing enough that when he opens the gate and offers further assistance, amusement bubbles in her voice. ]
You know, I'm starting to think that you're worried. [ It's nothing more than a gentle tease at his whole emotionless state. A bit of fun, distraction. And it's nice to pretend someone she met cares. ] But I'll be okay.
[ And she will! A bit slow ascending, but she's not in danger of collapsing. ]
no subject
was a petty bitchhad been called out on apparently displaying something that could be interpreted as emotions, he tucked the hand that had about to be offered to help her walk behind his back instead.]Very well. You may go first.
[He would just walk behind her the whole way up. Not to catch her if she slipped, of course. To make sure she didn't get lost going up four flights of narrow stairs because she couldn't keep up with his stride.]
no subject
One, two, three flights of stairs later, she has her hand to her chest as she draws in a few uneven but hearty deep breaths, but besides that, she relishes in the victory. She's made it to the top without incident. Rem moves to the side, leaning against the wall so that he might reach the door to unlock his residence. ]
S-see? No problem. [ Lookit her! Look at how she's managed! She's totally okay. Going up these stairs proved it. ]
no subject
Foolish woman.
[He said to her as he moved past to open the door. He went in first and then held the door for her and jerked his head to the side to indicate she had better hurry her butt inside.
The interior of the apartment was clean and tidy. Other than a small, potted, orchid sitting in on the eastern-facing window sill, there wasn't anything really personal. Just the basics that the apartment had come with, all kept well-maintained.]
no subject
She steps through the door.
Rem notes both the simplicity and the cleanliness of the room. Given the luxuriousness of the robes he wears, she can only imagine this minimalistic abode is far inferior to where he'd normally reside. ]
Oh. [ She spots the single flower on the sill. ] How lovely. [ It's a nice, personal touch to a room that otherwise appears not even lived-in. ]
no subject
[He replied, not realizing she was looking at the orchid which looked very well cared for. He was busy moving to the table set aside in the kitchen area to drop her bag on it and begin sorting through the mess of medicines and remedies.
Daqiang was no healer, but he knew enough about medicines and elixirs to determine most of them seemed to be geared towards curing a cough. Considering her breathing problems and the bad blood she'd coughed up earlier (and tried to hide), he supposed it was a reasonable guess on her part at what would help.]
How long since you have last eaten? And what foods did you have?
no subject
She answers, distracted. ] This morning... Ah, a few oranges from a tree. [ They're ~free~ if they grow naturally. ] Then some bread. [ She pauses here, recalling how he had accused her of not caring for herself. Reciting her recent diet aloud makes it seem that she truly isn't, when in her mind, her choices had been calculated to afford the purchase of various remedies.
Straightening, she turns on her heels to face him, watching him as he looks over all the medicines. ] ...Is there something wrong?
no subject
[He replied as he pushed several bottles off to one side and then dumped the rest in the bag. Which he then closed and put on the floor. At that point he looked up to find where she'd gone and he froze, eyes widening in alarm.
He practically ran across the room to put himself between her and the orchid, back to her as he checked over the plant carefully without touching it to be certain she hadn't done anything other than look. When he was satisfied, he turned and shooed her away, toward the table.]
Go over there.
no subject
But how is that possible? Perhaps she had misunderstood what he had told her earlier. Maybe he can feel... some... things...?
Her thoughts aside, an apology is in order. She hadn't meant to cause him any distress. ]
Ah... Sorry. I was only admiring its color, promise.
no subject
[It was a lovely creamy white with darker spots on the interior of the petals. By all rights it could be considered a paragon of it's flora species. But because it wasn't exactly the same as her it was ugly.
He tucked his hands behind his back and walked away from it like he hadn't just panicked over Rem getting too close.]
It's very delicate and difficult to keep alive. The smallest change can make it wilt. Nothing makes it happy for long. It should not be disturbed.
[Daqiang was definitely feeling some sort of way about the plant. Though it wasn't specifically that orchid which had him complaining, the two were similar enough. He made it back to the table and waved a hand to make a small writing kit appear.]
Forget about the grass. It is your health that is delicate at the moment, not it's.
no subject
The appearance of the writing kit earns a lift of her brow. Then man is full of magical surprises. When her surprise settles, she clears her throat. ]
I'm... recovering, I am. [ There. An amendment to her outright denying it, a half-truth. ] But if you're going to teach me something more about these medicines, I'm willing to listen.
no subject
[Opening the kit, he pulled out a thick capped pen that proved to be a writer's brush when he took the cap off. A vial of watery black ink was opened and he carefully dipped the brush into it before pulling a sheet of paper in front of him. With both the paper settled and the brush ready, he held back his sleeve with his offhand and began writing in elegant (Chinese) calligraphy.]
This is a list of foods that should be available now that promote yin energy. Oranges remain a good choice, but you should also see out pears. Vegetables are more prevalent during this season, so mushrooms, spinach, bok choy, squash, and cucumber should be readily available from grocers. Meats are neutral but do not add spices or any foods that create a heat in the mouth. Those are yang, which you do not need right now.
[When he was done writing his list (all the foods he'd named plus a few others that were neutral), he set the brush down to drip dry on a pad and then handed the paper to her. He was trusting the translation magic to allow her to read it even if she wasn't familiar with his language.]
This venerable one must already care for a temperamental grass. Do not make trouble for this venerable one by making him care for you as well.
[She wasn't even his responsibility the way Orchid was.]
no subject
She takes the paper offered, reading over it. Never had Class Zero's "Mother"-- Dr. Al-Rashia-- suggested that Rem had some sort of imbalance within her. The medicine she had prescribed caused intense pain at night, but she had assured Rem it would help. Like a good patient, she had taken it religiously.
If relief involves something as simple as changing her diet and avoiding the incorrect medications... perhaps it's something they missed. Perhaps this will work. Yet, Rem's fingers crinkle the edges of the paper. How many times has she held a prescription, a doctor's order, a torn page from a spellbook, or something else in her hands feeling the same hope that it might work? It feels more than a million times. More than a hundred million times. Suddenly, she feels very... old.
..."Old"?
Rem glances away, blinks, then looks back at him. No, not that. Just... tired. Yes, that's the term. ]
You mentioned the balance of energies. How much do I have to consume of Yin-products to help strengthen it within me?
no subject
[He set about cleaning up his writing kit. Slower than he pulled it out and with great care for cleaning the brush.]
If you experience any unnatural chills, then you have taken too much. If you do, you may need some yang food to bring your body back into balance. However, it's better to try foods that are neutral before looking for those with yang. A healthy body will have a natural balance for both and align to that balance when not unduly influenced. Foods aren't as strong as medicines, since those are heavily concentrated. But foods will aid in restoring the natural balance when it is upset.
[He reached over and pushed the pile of medicines he approved of a little closer to her.]
Pick one to try. Do not mix them.
[And then, a little pointedly and with a good deal of grumpiness, like it was somehow a personal offense:]
And eat more than just one orange a day. You are not like that orchid in the window, who can subsist on only morning dew and sunlight.
...Mortals must eat more often.
no subject
Rem reaches for one of the ampoules, giving the contents a swirl. The movement turns the suspension into a misty, blue substance. Without another word, she breaks the top portion, pours the liquid into her mouth, then swallows. She doesn't so much as a flinch from the bitter taste. ]
I appreciate the help, Moon Supreme. [ If a cure cannot be found, then that's all the more reason for her to work on finding something that can serve as the Altocrystarium. She only needs to survive until then. As such, him offering a list of what to consume and what to avoid means more than he'll ever know. A touch more of emotion weighs her words, and she looks away. ] ...Truly.
[ But, again, she picks up on that hint of annoyance regarding that plant. And she can't help but wonder if the "care" he mentioned of it is similar to how he's offering his help for her, as if it's some sort of nuisance. She can't expect someone like him to offer help out of the goodness of his heart, so: ]
...I'll repay you, I will. So if you have something in mind, I'll help.
