Nanaki/Red XIII || Paladins || OTA
[There's a lot more action at the Conservatory recently. And honestly, who can really blame anyone? Nanaki was part of the cause, after all; with the help of everyone at those awful auction houses, he was able to free a lot of caged creatures and animals. While most ended up back in the wild, some had been sick and injured, or in horrible physical states. Nanaki couldn't leave them there, or leave them to die out in the wild, so he saw to it to bring as many sick and injured creatures to the Conservatory as possible. He's sure most will be able to return to the wild after some rest and care, but he knows that will take some time.]
[He's been running around so much that his paws are starting to hurt, but when a new face arrives, he's there to greet them.]
Welcome. Are you here to help out? Thanks, we greatly appreciate it. Here, let's see if I can find a task for you to help with...
Orwell's Market
[Of course, with so many rare and exotic creatures in his care, it's no surprise that some have come hunting to steal the injured beasts under his care. Unfortunately for any would-be poachers or thieves, Nanaki isn't about to let any of his new wards be taken.]
[Any brave Corsairs who come looking to steal one of the beasts here will eventually be met with drawn claws and a deep, guttural growl.]
This is a protected place. You are not welcome here.
Not So Animal Farm 🐾
Suppose I should disclose I have no medical know-how, but if that's what you need extra hands with I'd be happy to learn.

[His good eye can spy that side-arm that she's got with her, and she has the overall countenance of a fighter. He nods to her, his tail flicking a bit.]
Right now, I think we could use a few extra hands to help guard the place. Especially since we have so many staying with us for now, and teeth and claws can only get you so far.
[As fierce as Nanaki was, he's not exactly one who can fire guns.]

[ Hands on her hips, she regards Nanaki curiously for a moment. Shepard's met all sorts of folk of different shapes and sizes in her lifetime, but Nanaki is the first she's spoken to that bears such a striking resemblance to other species from Earth. ]
You much of a fighter? Can't imagine there's much opportunity for it working here...
[ After a small pause she huffs a laugh, holding a hand up in pre-emptive surrender. ]
That wasn't a challenge. You just sound like you have experience.

You could say I've seen my fair share of battles before. And no offence, but I've seen how humans can get when you take something they think is theirs.

[ Even back home, in a community made up of people from all over the galaxy, humans are viewed as aggressive and greedy upstarts. Their rapid expansion and politicians constantly manoeuvring for more power does little to disprove the stereotype. ]
Guess that's also why I'm here, too.

[Behind him, Nanaki's tail wags a bit. He glances over his shoulder, watching as nearby a skin-and-bones unicorn is grazing on some feed, and some sort of large canine creatures are playing together despite the bandages on them.]
I'm just glad that these guys can finally get some rest and help before being released back home.

Any idea if there's anything being put in place to protect them once they're back home? I've not been here too long, but I'm not aware of any other place that could be considered a sanctuary outside of here.
no subject
Well, a lot of them are strong enough to manage on their own, and they've told me that they've become pretty wary of poachers now. I think most of them just got unlucky. But hopefully, when they go back home, they'll be able to keep away from any poachers.
[It's not perfect, but Nanaki trusts the creatures to be able to look after themselves. Though, now that it's been mentioned, a part of him worries about if they could use some extra protection.]
I know there's a conservatory on Elah as well, but that's more for research purposes. But aside from that, I don't think there's really anything like this anywhere else. Hmm... maybe I could ask the Paladins to increase watch over known poaching areas?

[ And as long as there's a monetary incentive to do so, with those responsible getting away at the auction, it's going to continue to be a problem. Shepard sighs and drags a hand back through her hair - even then, there'll always be someone to fill the vacuum left behind. ]
If you do seek further help from the Paladins, it'd be best for the creatures to steer clear of them too where possible, just in case.

[Nanaki sighs and flicks his tail in irritation. He hates how greedy some humans can get. If he could, he'd keep them all here for their own safety... but he also knows that most of the creatures here won't be able to live their lives fully here if they did; he'd like them to live their lives as fully as possible. But while there's always a presence of hunting and death in the wild, he knows poachers will always be a problem, especially if those markets were anything to go off of.]
I'll be sure to tell them. Though, based on what the other animals have told me, they're definitely going to stay away from people as much as they can.
no subject
[ Another example of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch, but that's a tale as old as time itself. She offers Nanaki a small smile though, resting a hand on her hip. ]
At least you'll be able to keep tabs on them if you want to, right?
no subject
[It'll still take some work, but he's not just going to take the easy route on this.]
And hey, the more people like you who're willing to help out, the better. [A beat.] Oh, what's your name, by the way? So I can thank you properly.
no subject
[ A firm nod in belated greeting. ]
How about you?

[Shepherd seems real nice! He's happy to have her here helping out.]
I'm Nanaki. It's nice to meet you!

You mind giving me a tour of the place, or know anyone who can? Would be good to have a look around with someone who knows their way around.
Good to wrap?
[His tail wags happily.]
Come on, follow me!
Yep! 👍
