Shellton | Eltrut | "Movable Type" Bookshop - OTA
[While there are many things to see and do throughout the wide world of Escordvi, Dion has started small and has started by taking time for leisure, something he rarely had time for in Valisthea, and so he was browsing shelves, surprisingly vast ones, in a bookshop off the main market. Mostly, the tall blond is keeping himself to the non-fiction section, amazed at the sheer number of titles spanning the shelves. It would seem printing was a thing here, as the typewriter which initiated him suggested, and he's rarely seen so many books collected in one place.

So much knowledge is collected here he hardly knows where to begin, and so he might turn to a fellow browser, leaning slightly so as to keep his voice low.]

Begging your pardon, of course, could you perchance suggest a title? I've no idea where to begin.

Eltrut | A Clearing Outside Shellton | OTA
[He's received a word of warning from Jill regarding the potential potency of Bahamut, which only serves to further reinforce the caution Benedikta instilled in him, and so in an effort to assure he's prepared to aid those here in whatever capacity he is able, Dion has found a suitable clearing outside the port in order to acclimate to the way his Aether pools in this place.

The prince is clad in his mithril armor for no other reason than it serves the purpose of protection and doesn't force him to spend doubloons he'd rather keep for food, and sets about moving through warm-up drills first: simple polearm forms designed to get his muscles loose and to work out the stiffness from his joints he always experiences in association with the Crystal's curse that's slowly turning all Bearers and Dominants to stone.

He'll welcome the company, and is more than game to spar with anyone looking to hone their skills or keep themselves sharp. He'll offer an amicable smile when he pauses in his rhythm, inclining his head.]

I don't suggest you adopt a devil-may-care flippancy, but you are your own man, Hawks.

[He was being borderline hypocritical, but he was fairly certain their situations were vastly different.]

[ That is the crux of the matter, isn't it, and it's easy to understand why Dion would think that. Why anyone would really. ]

Mhm. My friends have been around for a while so they've spent a lot of time and effort on their ship. I just joined them recently.

[She smiled gently at him.]

I like that. Peace. [She moved closer to him and took a flower from her basket to hold out to him.] Here, for you.

No? Yes? I-I don't know...

[ he's here for a purpose that's for someone else, but it's not like he was told to come here specifically. "wait 'til i get back, drippy." that kind of thing. he doesn't know why it matters in the first place?

flustering, kit offers the best answer he can: ]

[And Joshua finds himself smiling in return, a tilt of amusement in his own tone.]

Yes, please do. I would rather not be forced to discharge you from your service, dear knight.

[He chuckles... Opps. Is this flirting a little bit? Opps.]

[The ship on which they'd chartered passage to the island which served as a Paladin resting place was also a Paladin vessel, discounted on account of Dion's alignment and his resolve to put their fellows to rest and see to it whatever had caused them to rise was brought low.

It was not a vow he'd take lightly. Even still, the ship's captain was unwilling to sail too close to the island, claiming it had an ill aura. All Dion noticed as he rowed their small craft closer to shore was how still it all felt.

The necropolis, for it was a massive structure, was shrouded in heavy foliage, creeping vines having claimed the edifice over time, and great trees assured the stone mausoleum was perpetually shaded, and yet he heard no birds, no chittering rodents.

Outside, at least, it was as though death had truly claimed this place.

Or something darker.]

It is certainly foreboding. [They neared a small beach and he pulled in the oars, allowing the current to bring them in.]

Agreed, but we should be careful. If we start to feel threatened by anything, we should note what we can and come back another time. Something in this doesn't sit well.

[ all of her instincts say there's a more sinister cause. And if she knows her luck with cases, something will go sideways. And fast. ]

Let's see if we can find some clues as to where the crews went. Even if we don't find them, if we have ideas as to where they are, that's something we can take back. Rain might not let up, either, so we shouldn't stay long.

[ it's funny... in a way, it feels like the rain back home in minrathous. Rumor had it that the near constant rain was caused by the magic holding the archon's palace aloft above the city. And in some ways... this rain feels similar.

She holds a gauntleted hand out, catching a few droplets, but refraining from doing more than sniffing them. ]

Not sure I like this rain, either, if I'm honest. The quiet feels wrong. Could be a magical cause. Stay on your toes.

You "belong" to them or you are a willing member? [the most he speaks to Hawks, the more he begins to sound as though trapped in the same situation as Bearers in his own world, Branded as possessions.] It is an important distinction.

[ Were he not at the point that people seemed to think he's acting strange sometimes, he'd be more reluctant. ]

All heroes are granted their license by the HPSC, but... [ Hawks clears his throat. ]

I belong to them. I'm the only one though. [ As if that's better, or somehow more acceptable. ]

If I do? [ He's met with the ghost of her own smile. It's meant as some semblance of teasing. ]

Or maybe it'd simply be more fun for you to show me.

[ There's no better way to get a feel for someone than seeing what they can do in action. At least in her opinion. ]

Dion it is then. So which are you interested in pursuing here?

It's only I've never heard of a garden aboard a ship before.

[And yet it stood to reason, didn't it? So many called their vessels home in this world.

His smile broadens somewhat, taking the yellow flower from her graciously with a slight bow.]

[And he tucks the flower by the stem into the straps that secure his pauldrons in place so that it sits just above his heart.] I look forward to seeing what more you grow.

I see.

[At this point, Dion is starting to get the impression he's causing more distress than helping. He stands, taking up the first book Kitsunami recommended and inclining his head.]

I pray your friend arrives soon. Until then, I believe this will suffice for now. I thank you for your help and mayhap we will meet again once you and I are both better acclimated.

[He turns to leave, but stops, turning back.] When next we meet, I hope you have read something you enjoy, not something you were directed to.

[But he doesn't stick around to make the creature's life more awkward, instead heading to pay for his purchase and make his way back to his quarters.]

[He inclines his head and shoulders in acknowledgement, mirth and something quite like fondness dancing in his golden eyes before something shadows them and his smile falters for a moment before he recovers, taking a breath and straightening.]

I can assure you my service is exemplary. Now, have you had enough of your lesson for the day, Your Grace or have you rested enough?

[The moment comes and goes. Joshua knows better than to push for more but he is happy for the small, playful moment between them.

He sheaths his sword.] As skilled a swordplay teacher as you are, Dion, but I believe I've reached my limit for today. Thank you for this.

[He smiles.]

Everything here is threatening.

[The silence is the most eerie. Save for the rain, there is no sound at all, and she is right to be cautious.

And she was right about the rain as well. There was something almost sinister about it, and it certainly weighed him down more than a downfall should.

And he was developing a beastly thirst as well, one that wouldn't long be sustained by the water they'd brought with them.]

What sort of magical origin would make entire crews disappear and leave their wrecks behind? A beast of some kind?

And your fellow "heroes" suffice with this arrangement?

[His frown only deepens.]

I would not count them among my friends.

[ He doesn't, actually, because he's not allowed to have friends. ]

They don't know about it. It would be a big problem if they were doing something like this, so it's a secret.

[ Whether or not some of them might be worried about him is another issue. ]

I'd hope not. Came up with all this on my own.

But I thought you had some kind of training, what with that old armor you're wearing.

[Although he had offered to help row, he let Dion take the oars and instead helped to keep a lookout as they approached the shore. A frown settles on his features as he, too, notices the oddity in the silence and stillness. Certainly not the "quiet, peaceful sanctuary" that it should be.]

Quite. Best to stay on guard once we land.

[He glances at Dion.]

Others have been through here, haven't they?

then I shall endeavor to provide a detailed one. Otherwise, I'll trust in your skills of observation.

[Not that he had any knowledge of those. Still, of the missions available here, he was certain his skills would be better served handling an undead threat rather than disappearances, at least without a unit at his disposal.]

The mausoleum. I feel we may do the best work there, provided you aren't the squeamish type.

[He moves to clean his halberd with a cloth he pulls from the supply pack, not looking over as he adds.]

There is an eatery near the beach I've visited a time or two. They have a particular side dish I've grown fond of, tiny grilled cabbages, and I was thinking of visiting this evening, if you've an interest in joining me.

[Brussels sprouts. They're brussels sprouts.]

[ A light burst of laughter comes out of her at that and she shakes her head. ]

No, need to worry about me being squeamish. Not in the slightest. [ With a roll of her shoulders she makes a 'hm' sound, contemplating, before giving a single nod. ]

Why not? I have nothing more pressing to attend to at right now.

I suppose I don't know if they're unique, but they are... everywhere. Especially the commercial ones. You can't get power and radio without the Saint Electric, gas without the Petropater... they're in the food and the buildings and everythin' else.

[ And he sounds tired when he says this. But then he thinks about the first thing Dion said. ]

...Parentage?

[ Gods are not people where he's from, on that level, they definitely don't have literal children who are. ]

[He stands there for a moment, simply watching Hawks, trying to measure the man's feelings on that matter and coming up short. How much of what he'd seen of the man, which was admittedly not much at this point, was his choice?

For example, he exhibited great skill in the use of his weapons, and he wagered even if they were not his feathers, given swords, Hawks would be just as effective.

But-]

Do you enjoy combat?

[ He's being observed and that alone makes him a bit wary, although he cocks his head to the side rather quizzically at the question.

Dion's perception is correct, but there's far more that he can do with these feathers. One could follow the conclusion that the hundreds on his back are all little knives - entirely accurately at that. ]

Am I supposed to enjoy it? [ He wasn't expecting that question. ]

It's a vitally important aspect to keep me alive in my job so I can keep other people alive. I'd rather that it not be necessary.
