Who: Espio the Chameleon & YOU Status: Mostly open, some closed Where: eh you know What: Catch-all of variety of shenanigans for May Warnings: Will update as needed but nothing right now.
[ surge is so cool and talented. isn't she so fast? kit finds himself paying more attention to her than the chameleon by his side—or the ground under his feet as it shifts. ]
Wahhh!!
[ he can't help but yelp as it shifts away, dropping the two of them into the darkness. perhaps espio is lucky that he has his own solution, because kit is so focused on stopping the fall that he doesn't so much as glance towards the other. instead, his eyes catch the light—shining a bright pink from under his bangs as water emerges from his hydropack, reaching up and out of the hole they've found themselves falling in.
once out, the hydro-coil tails wrap around the nearest objects to anchor him as he pulls himself up, water receding as his feet touch the ground.
and then he looks around frantically, searching for: ]
[ that's weird, surge leans forward to place the palm of her hand against the tombstone to see if there's anything weird about it. why did it shift down, what's going on here? even as she knocks against it with a brief rap of her knuckles, she notices nothing out of the ordinary. when kitsunami calls for her, surge jumps off the tombstone which causes the floor to close completely (better be outta there, espio), and surge keeps her eyes on the slab. ]
Calm down, I'm right here! Wassup?
[ she doesn't check over to where the two are, but she knows by the sound of kit's voice that something inconvenienced him to do that thing that he does. jumping up, they may not see her waving arm, but they'll see the tips of her hair peeking out from behind a few bushes that surrounds this set of grave plots.
the thing about this place is that it's quiet, there's no sound or anything that gives way to life close to them. even the calls of critters or skittering of rats happen to be absent, she wonders why that is, but that could be that animals may be scared of the dead.
what she likes to think when she looks down at the empty hole in the ground. ]
Espio manages to get out of the hole in time, though he does look at how it seems to close back up. Interesting, who took the time to make that kind of trap at a monastery? Then again, it's hard to say how long this place has been affected. Clearly, long enough.
His eyes flit up, spotting Surge's bright green hair against the desaturated environment. Nice thing about them being vibrantly colored furries in this horror setting, it's going to be hard to miss each other.]
The floor gave way when you touched that tombstone. [It isn't accusatory, just a factual explanation.] I expect there will be more traps like that if one that elaborate is here.
[ kit scrabbles a little further away from the place where the trap had been set as it begins to close, peering back down at the space with wide eyes as it finally shuts. but surge is safe. isn't that what matters? he glances between her and the trap for a moment, but... ]
I-is it a trap?
[ it's not like they went down and checked it out or anything... of course they didn't want to fall in, but that doesn't mean that there's not a better way in.
or maybe he's onto nothing and it is a trap. it's probably at least worth checking out if there are spikes at the bottom first. ]
Whaaat! You two found somethin' cool and didn't call me over!?
[ damn, leave her out of the fun. she doesn't know exactly where it is, but she looks at kitsunami first, then espio second. did it really come from the tombstone? it doesn't sound real, but she's never been to a monastery before so maybe this is common. ]
I wanna see. Do you think it could be a hidden path or does someone really die if you push'em down?
[ she sounds almost interested, but as curious as she is, her little twin tails wagging with interest, she'll also point at her find. ]
Check the graves too, it's like, all messed up from what I've seen.
[Maybe it wasn't a trap, but it was Espio's first instinct. Maybe it was just poor timing -- or really, excellent timing? Hard to say.]
I could climb down to make sure it'd be safe for the three of us. But let's examine those graves you mentioned first, just in case there are any important clues.
[ kit nods fervently at the suggestion that they go check it out. if surge found something, then it must be important, even if it's just the switch for this spot over here. you're so cool and awesome, surge.
look, he's already trotting back over that trapdoor and back to where surge is. ]
[ it's grey and dreary, sometimes a fog looks like it wants to roll in, and other times it seems to be backing away, circling around the area, but never drifts inside.
the temperature grows more humid the longer they remain. ]
Sure, sure. Go take a peek.
[ like the one nearby? surge is already jumping down inside of it curious as to why it's all dug up. or maybe this is a fresh burial site for someone, whatever the reason, she's already digging with her hands in search of a coffin.
tossing the dirt back, possibly getting it on espio and kit, surge seems to be in her own world as she starts by making a small hole already in the grave. ]
What do clues even look like in a grave... [ she looks to the tombstone to read the name. ] Geoffrey John Winstorn the 3rd, do you have anything to say? Pfft, hahaha!!
[There's a thoughtful look on Espio's face as he watches Surge dig. He pauses when some dig gets flung into his face from her enthusiasm, and he shakes it off with a sigh; it doesn't bother him but it does continue to show her recklessness in just about everything.]
Either a grave that was dug in preparation, or... [He trails off, then frowns. Nope! He does not want to entertain the thought that something dig itself out from this. He skipped Resident Evil, we aren't going back.]
[ not necessarily with her grave though—far be it from kit to steal surge's thunder. instead, he turns around, trotting through the cemetery in search of something else to investigate. give him a few moments, and he'll call back towards the other two. ]
I found something...!
[ the top half of his body is dipping into the crate lined next to the fence of the monastery. next to it are a couple of barrels, but that's not what he's so interested in. with his feet kicking out of the crate, give him a minute to fall back onto them and—
in his hands are a few dried mushrooms, dug out from the bottom of the crate.
he looks kind of frustrated with this outcome, but hey, maybe surge is hungry? ]
[ as she digs, sometimes she thinks that she hears moaning, even when her ears twitch and she presses her head against the ground.
there's nothing. perhaps she's hearing things, it could be the wind's breeze running through the area. that's why she rolls her eyes and laughs as though there's no way. ]
No way, fate wouldn't line up the same boring methods twice. Nothin' is poppin' out these graves.
[ but would paladins lie? they said people disappeared so they're probably dealing with a ...
...
missing person's case(s). it does irritated surge, clicking her tongue as she comes to the edge of the plot, jumping up with ease as she looks to see what kit has brought to her and espio. ]
Uh...
[ looks at espio. ] Payment from us, I know you can eat.
[Faced with the mushrooms now before him, Espio considers a moment. Well, they don't look rotten or anything, dehydrated if anything else. So... yes, technically, he might be able to use them.]
...I see.
[He holds out his hand for the mushrooms.] All right, then. I accept.
[ kit hands over the dried mushrooms, which are now espio's spoils. there are other crates and barrels sitting around too, mostly gathered at the bends and corners of the fence enclosing them, but for now? ]
Should we... try the trap again?
[ he doesn't know if he wants surge to be caught digging up graves... ]
I guess Curltail can look at the graves, this what he does.
[ he's the detective, maybe there's something that she's not seeing because surge isn't going out of her way to look for any strange patterns in the dirt, or if any grass has been bent compared to the other blades. ]
Unless he's rulin' this as not somethin' that needs to go under investigation.
[ surge doesn't listen to anyone but herself, but this isn't her thing. she likes to rescue and punch things, and she's already holding her hand out that's covered in dirt towards kitsunami so he can clean the dead people dirt off. ]
Mm. I will share my findings, if there is anything to be found.
[So, Espio's turn to go gravedigging! He goes in, examining the hole, but he does think Surge might be right. It doesn't quite look like something came bursting out; no, instead, this hole must have been dug up.
What for, though?
He does trace his fingers along, trying to get a sense of whether there's a coffin or not. However, it's mostly just dirt. Maybe this place didn't even have caskets? It's not impossible.
Eventually, Espio is very relieved that he's wearing gloves, because he comes across something metallic, pointy, and wicked looking. A saw. Specifically, a bloodstained bonesaw.]
[ he'd be a little disappointed that they can't explore further—into the danger where surge can prove how helpful and heroic is, but then she's offering her hand? surge is giving her hand to him? and of course he accepts it, taking it in his own, and then just holds her dirty hand. actually, he seems kind of happy about it. the beginnings of a smile tug at his lips.
then espio starts mumbling something and distracts him.
[ snatching her hand away, the tenrec looks at kit as if he's crazy for that. ]
C'mon, what are ya thinkin'!? I wanted you to douse it, not hold it!
[ ugh, why isn't anything coming up surge? she's already making her way towards the edge to see what it is espio has come across. crouching down, the girl sets her hands on her knees to look in, and what she finds is... ]
Oh! That is SO cool!? Give me that!
[ she can use that, she's already holding out her hand for him to hand it over. ]
[ MAN... he thought she wanted to hold hands. he was so excited. now she's just holding this ugly old bone saw that espio got her, so of course kit spares an unhappy glance in his direction. then his attention flips right back to surge. ]
Should I wash it for you, Ma'am?
[ he seems really eager to help, at least. espio stay in your lane. ]
[ never know when you're going to need a bonesaw, and this thing got use. she's already running one finger along the sharp end playfully. ]
We have somethin' in case you twist your ankle and don't wanna be deadweight.
[ she reassures, a wild grin in his direction so he knows that this warning or concealed threat is for him.
as for the question, she looks down at her bonesaw that's covered in blood then to kit before handing it to him. yeah, what's the worst that could happen? she may have saw that unhappy glance, she may have snickered too (she did), but she's going to act like this isn't her problem. ]
You said it was the tombstone that opened it... [ she confirms with espio first by looking at him and before he can even confirm or deny. ] Drippy use ya water to push it down unless you wanna sit on it and wait for us to come back?
[ espio is a detective not a thief so he won't steal her or push her down the hole, maybe. ]
