Not too long at all. If we use the hollow of the tree, there's not much else needed. It's summer now so we don't have to worry about it getting too cold, and outside of perhaps creating a special door of sorts to help keep out potential nosy predators, they should be quite safe inside. Only other things I could think of would be some place for them to store food...and perhaps a way for them to get rid of waste if they're so inclined.
