ELTRUT

With the Ghoul's Moon festivities over, it's time for everyone to clean up and prepare for the coming winter season. Of course, with the leviathans capable of moving and keeping to warmer waters, it's usually not much of an issue. But it never hurts to be prepared, and the crops and products are always great for export.

One of the biggest products that will be sent off this season will be everything pumpkin. The giant pumpkin shell Eltrut created for Ghoul's Moon will start to shed and the leviathan will need some help in gathering the large chunks before it falls completely into the ocean. Harvesting the pumpkin shell off of Eltrut is no easy feat, but not only is it edible, the rind is also tough and durable.

🔪 Harvest. Using carving knives and pickaxes, everyone must head out of town and into the forests to remove the pumpkin and clean off the shell beneath. Large tubs and wagons will be provided to help haul off the goods.
🐢 Pumpkin Spice Turtles. Drawn by all the pumpkins are small little pumpkin turtles. They are forbidden from being harmed or caught, however, they produce a special "pumpkin spice" and "pumpkin cinnamon" dust that can be carefully collected. While most will respect the law, others will be greedy and try to capture these turtles. Help protect and catch any who try—or perhaps get some extra cash by successfully catching and selling them off.
🔨 Build-A-Pumpkin. To help spur motivation and creativity, there are numerous competitions centered on building the most interesting and durable creation using only the pumpkin rinds. Some small things like nails and bits of wood can be used to help, but it must otherwise be made out of the rinds. From unique artwork to small buildings to carriages to boats and ships—the possibilities are endless. Just don't mind the mess.

Of more concern, both Eltrut and the Naughtilust were weakened from the attack from the Ghost Ship and are dozing a bit for the first week or so. Those in charge are requesting help in preparing special food that will help with their recovery. But to help keep spirits up and to hopefully provide some positive energy to the leviathans, a special hotpot gathering will be hosted for anyone to come and help cook, either for the leviathans or for others. A perfect chance to socialize and catch up with others. Just keep an eye out—someone may try to spoil the food.

To aid the two weakened leviathans, a list of key ingredients is provided for volunteers to head into the forests and out to sea to gather. Large tables and several grills, pots, and other cooking equipment will be provided for anyone to use.

🔥 Fire Sprites. Instead of normal flames, the food for the leviathans needs to be cooked over a special fire created by special fire sprite. They will only appear around campfires or bonfires where stories are told, so time to create a suitable fire pit and get to storytelling! Any kind will work.
🌰 Chest of Chestnuts. One of the most prized ingredients is a special type of chestnut that can only be found in special acorn chests buried underground by squirrel scavengers. These squirrels specifically gather these chestnuts because they are so rare, delicious, and known to have medicinal properties. Said squirrels will also gladly relinquish their store…if they can remember where those chests are. Time to go on a wild treasure hunt!
🐡 Fish Puffing. There is a special type of pufferfish that will be carefully collected and brought to the pier where volunteers must wear special gloves and carefully squeeze the fish to force it to secrete a special fluid that has potent healing properties. Soothe the fish and make them more willing to be handled by singing a cheerful tune. Whistling and other music can help. Feeding them special kelp and gently petting them will also keep them calm and less agitated.
🍲 Cookoff! Whether it's for the leviathans or just cooking a meal to be shared with others, the cooking stations are constantly in use. Who can prepare the most delicious meal?

ELAH

Things are a bit hectic within Baleen, the capital city of Elah. A wild flock of singing turkeys have been set loose and they are running amok, causing a disturbance to everyone. They are getting stuck in chimneys, popping into bathrooms, and swimming in the many fountain pools found all over town. What makes them more disruptive is their singing, which, unfortunately, sound more like nails dragging down chalkboard. While some may be ready to roast them to send to Eltrut for a feast, perhaps some may try to catch them.

And send them to Nogard. (They likely came from there, anyway—)

Researchers would especially appreciate it if these turkeys could be caught and removed as they are busy studying the tombstone relic brought back from the ghost ship. What secrets could it hold…?

At the Archives, researchers are hard at work studying the broken pieces of the black tombstone that was brought back from the ghost ship. They believe it's the reason the ship and its undead crew appeared, but how?

💤 Energy Drain. Although precautions are set, those who are exposed to the relics start feeling a bit drained, as if their energy is being sucked away. Quickly remove any affected and find a way to seal or contain the relics without being affected as well.
🪦 Undeadly Experiments. Although now in pieces, the tombstone relic still holds some power. Thus researchers decide to perform direct tests and experiments to see how it affects the undead. There are requests made to those who have previously died either in their world or this one, and some venture to graveyards where dead and ghosts are sometimes active. When in close contact with the relic, all who have experienced death in some way will become more hostile and aggressive, some even outright attacking any nearby. Help protect those performing the experiment and subdue the affected until they calm down.
🏃‍♂️ Thief! Those damn Corsair, they can never respect important research! A few bad eggs are breaking the agreement and are trying to steal the fragments, perhaps to sell them off to someone else or for some other purpose.

NOGARD

In Nogard, the island the leviathan has settled in is teeming with wild beasts, and perhaps due to being in a warmer climate, they are appearing more and more often, as if coming out of hibernation. It makes for a perfect opportunity for hunters to head out in hopes of collecting rare meat, materials, and hides that can be used and sold. To prevent overhunting, a competition is hosted with rules and regulations that all participants must abide by.

As such, there will be a group to help ensure security and they will even request assistance from Paladins, who are also allowed to participate in the hunt if they wish. Thus those who prefer to go after people will be quite useful to keep track and go after anyone who is poaching, hunting creatures under the "protected" list, or wasting the kills. To any who are caught…well, the Paladins may fare nicer compared to a Corsair.

While most predators and creatures of large populations are eligible for the competition, there are a few notable hunts that will reap great rewards for those who dare. Those who turn in their kills will receive a decent portion of the profits and first choice in what to keep for their own. The rest will be turned in to be sold, with the Elphantin tusks going straight to Eltrut to be used for the recovery efforts.

🦈 Goblin Shark. This deep-sea shark has a distinctive long, flattened snout and protrusible jaws, making it look quite unusual compared to other shark species. All parts of its body can be used so it makes for a profitable hunt—if one can brace the cold depths to take it down.
🐍 Coibara. Head of a cobra, body of a bear, and tail and coloring of a koi fish, this snake chimera can be found in dark coves and anywhere near deeper bodies of water. Capable of sprinting over the ground and swimming, beware of its poisonous fangs, which can also fetch a pretty penny along with its hide. The venom can also be collected for both poison and anti-venom purposes.
🦚 Pexeo. An equine beast with the body and markings of a zebra and plumage and head of a peacock that roams the greener valleys. Although not hostile, it can be dangerous if attacked, its beak revealing sharp rows of teeth that can tear up anything that gets caught in it and its hooves sharp as blades. Rather than killed, the feathers are the real prize and can be carefully plucked instead. But its meat can be considered a delicacy in some areas.
🐘 Elphantin. This giant elephant like creature is considered as the top hunt of the list. They can only be found deep within the forests and only appear at dawn when the foggy mist is thickest. While every part can be used, what makes this the top prize is the medicinal properties of its tusks. But it is very difficult to track and hunt and will take a group of skilled hunters to take down.

Afterwards, a large feast to celebrate is thrown, though of course it can get rowdy and with the alcohol fountain brought in, fights and brawls are bound to happen.

But there will also be a "special guest" rushing into town: wild boars. Perhaps agitated by the hunts or out for revenge against those who targeted them (which was allowed), the boars are crashing and charging into everything they see. While this may look like a good opportunity to prepare some BBQ Boar, the conservationists of the Corsairs would like to drive most of them back into the wilds.

...Right. [ Cool cool yeah, she'll trust him on the subject! Even if she is giving him a bit more of a dubious look than before. ]

I think they might have had some sort of energy transfer in mind when the researchers put up the manta quest. [ Rem reaches out to the device they've given her, a small plate of metal with a little light on the side. ] Well, energy transfer and storage. Like a battery.

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-12 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's most likely. Lightning combined with dendro creates a more efficient transfer of energy, but I need to ascertain how efficiently these are already working.

[He chuckles a bit, and shakes his head.] Actually, this is starting to be more of a friend's area of expertise than mine, but I'll do what I can.

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-11-12 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
How about we test this one, then? [ She indicates the device. ] If you provide the lightning, I'll see if I can transfer it to the substrate if it will hold a charge.

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-13 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I can't. That's where I'm currently stuck.

[Kaveh chuckles a bit, and shakes his head.] People don't...tend to have access to multiple elemental energies, where I'm from.

[We're not gonna worry about Aether right now, okay?]

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-11-14 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... [ A quiet 'hm'.

No way is she giving up this project, though. ]
So, then. If you have a [ What was the term he used, again? ] "dendro" power... [ And he did say that lightening combined with dendro makes for a more efficient energy transfer-- ]

And I have lightening at my disposal, maybe we can make something work.
empyrean_mirror: (45)

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-14 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Then that should work great.

[Kaveh pauses. Looks at the tables he is taking up.]

...But they probably won't appreciate us testing that at the café itself.

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-11-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not a problem, it's not. [ She says, smiling. ] Let's relocate to somewhere more appropriate.

[ She'll happily help him pack up.

Rem has no doubt that it is important to make notes and observations on the materials used to construct the devices, but there comes a point where simply studying the pieces isn't enough. They must be put to the test. ]
empyrean_mirror: (31)

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-16 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Listen, Kaveh is an architect, he likes to be sure of his materials first!!!

But once they're packed up (Mehrak has started levitating a lot of the papers and rolled them up into neat scrolls), Kaveh glances one way, then the other, and then goes--]

I think I saw a clear spot this way.

[It's nearish a beach but not so near they'll get wet unless they choose to! It's fine! Sand is good for putting out fires if anything explodes!]
vermilloci: (0376)

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-11-20 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ She's beginning to think that this guy is a bit of a nerd... But that's fine, she is too, and so she happily gathers her own device (which she still has no idea what it is) and accompanies him.

Once they make it to the area, she sets her own device on the ground, off to the side. They can start with the one he'd been assigned. ]

So... dendro and lightning. [ She's rather curious as to what "dendro" entails! It's not an element in her own world. Rem clasps her hands behind her back. ] How does one make the other more efficient in transferring energy?
empyrean_mirror: ("My questions and your questions)

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-21 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ah...I'm afraid explaining why wasn't exactly my area of expertise, but from how I understand it, dendro is an element of "growth", and so when it reacts to most other elements, it causes their effects to grow in some way. In the case of electr--lightning, it both aggravates the damage it does and spreads it out over an area.

[How do you explain elemental reactions without a handy card game to play? This is literally why Genius Invocation was invented. Shit.]
vermilloci: (pic#16779704)

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-11-24 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ At that, Rem raises her hand. Magic sparks at her fingertips in a flash of bright static.

If she's interpreting what he says correctly, then this "dendro" power acts as a magical amplifier. ]

I'm ready when you are.
empyrean_mirror: (51)

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-25 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, he doesn't startle at the magic, though it's weird to see it happen without a Vision or some sort of channeling medium. But he turns, and steps back a little, so when Mehrak scans the area--by sweeping it with a CLAYMORE, KAVEH WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS--he doesn't run into any problems with having a sword near her.]

There, it's primed, try it now.
vermilloci: (0370)

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-11-26 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A claymore??? Yeahhh no, she immediately takes a few steps back in surprise, the magic in her hand flaring up. Light crinkles in the air, making the area around them thick with static.

...The moment passes, however, and she lets out a nervous chuckle at her own reaction. ]

A-all right. [ Rem clears her throat, raising her hand in the direction of the devices. ] I'm going to start out with sending a smaller charge to the devices and see if that works in conjunction with your dendro power. [ Maybe it'll be enough, maybe it won't, but that's what this experiment is being done.

With a nod, she curls three other fingers into her palm, pointing at the device, and then sends out a chain of electricity. ]
empyrean_mirror: (34)

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-27 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, the good news it doesn't explode! The better news is the lantern does light up quite brightly for a little bit! The bad news is it quickly sputters back out fairly quickly. Kaveh does give a sidelong glance at Rem's nervous little chuckle, and realizes--]

Oh...my apologies, I should have warned you about the claymore.

[He is genuinely apologetic. He lives in a dangerous world and forgets, sometimes, how much so...he'll make it up to her later. For now, he turns his attention back to the device, and hums to himself.]

...It seems like it reacted with dendro just fine, but not for long. See if more lasts longer, perhaps? Otherwise this may be an issue of energy storage after all.
vermilloci: (pic#16848661)

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-11-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Got it.

[ Holding her hand out, she refocuses her energy once more, calling lightning forth. Light sparks from her hand to the lantern, and this time, she channels the power into a more steady stream. ]
empyrean_mirror: (That can accept everything)

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-11-28 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[It lights up again, much brighter, and Kaveh watches, fingers to his lips. Once more, though, it won't last long once she's not actively channeling power into it.]

...So it is a storage issue. But that's something we can solve. And since dendro increases the efficiency of the energy transfer, we don't need as much energy stored.

[A pause.] If only bloom cores didn't explode.
vermilloci: (048)

1/2

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-12-01 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ Rem stops channeling the spell, withdrawing her hand. It would be disappointing to think that they've hit a wall of some sort so soon into their testing. Moreover, even if they find a suitable material to hold a charge, it seems so insufficient. One would have to remove the battery each time it'd drain.

Ugh. She has to think back to the Emprie's magitek. How is it that they held some sort of charge derived from their Crystal, or were re-charged by it, even when that piece of magic-technology was a full continent away from the White Tiger Crystal itself...?

...

........ ]

....Oh!
vermilloci: (pic#16780329)

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-12-01 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Once we find a suitable conductor for this device, we then use magic to tether it to a remote generator, from which the device will receive far-field power. [ Complicated to do! Very much so! But she's seen it done in her world, so perhaps they can recreate it here on a smaller scale. ] With that set-up, we'll have a lantern that can be powered as needed across distances!

[ Rem walks over to where the lantern sits on the ground, and then crouches down beside it. ] I'm not a hundred percent certain how it works, but it usually involves the receiver and the generator being synced.

[ Still, that takes them back to their first problem: find a suitable conductor. She looks back at Kaveh. ] Can dendro assist with refining a material to better receive the energy given? Or is it solely an amplification of the energy itself?
empyrean_mirror: (60)

I lost this thread for a minute oops

[personal profile] empyrean_mirror 2023-12-09 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Kaveh thinks about this for a while, listening to her speak. Well, technically, it's similar to what he does with Mehrak, but to do it externally...hmm.]

I think it can be done, but it may take a bit of trial and error to sync the remote and the source. And the source would need to be safeguarded so none of the energy travels back into it--in most cases, backwash like that can be, uh....explosive.

[The second question, though, makes him brighten.]

I can do it. Alha--my roommate would be better at refining materials, but I can still do it. Worst case, it might just require another trip to that...to Master Octopus.

[He will NOT swear about the octopus in front of a teenager. he will not.]
vermilloci: (pic#16298532)

no worries! we can handwave the rest if you'd like <3

[personal profile] vermilloci 2023-12-09 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ 'Master Octopus' earns an arch of her brow, but she doesn't comment. ] Mm, configuring the emitter and receiver to properly transfer that energy is the more challenging process.... [ Or so she imagines. Knowing that it can be done is half the battle, though, and she's determined to see it through. She supposes she'll start small on her end just to see if it's possible to recreate something similar to her nation's innovations with what supplies they have here. ] In the Dominion, in addition to using the right material, it's accomplished by designing specific glyphs set to the machine. [ Which looks like a set of gears, as that motif is the signature of their magic. It probably doesn't have to be the exact same thing, here. ]

But I think it's still worth a try, it is.
