<< september: maiden voyage >>

Welcome to our Maiden Voyage log for the game! Because the grand opening is a bit different from how things will normally flow, the log is more like an event log with the MANTA Board included at the bottom. The focus of the log will be everyone getting a first taste of the home base for each armada, but not before having a farewell celebration in Eltrut to the new initiates! Since it is a little beefy, we've included navigation links to help jump between sections.

Players are welcome to use the MANTA Board as additional prompts in the log, or create your own open logs for them. There is no wrong or right way, whatever is most convenient for you.

If you have any questions about the log, comment here. If you have questions about the game in general, please comment to the Game Info.

ELTRUT: FAREWELL SENDOFF

It's been about a week or so since the newest batch of riftfarers arrived, and now the ships are ready to take them to their native armada base. But before everyone goes their separate ways, a special "sendoff" is held for the new initiates. Hosted by older, veteran riftfarers and their respective armada affiliation, two major competitions are held. One is to promote partnership between the armadas, the other is for their competitiveness.

A fan favorite for a number of years now, Legends of the Gutsy Ultimate Sailor Warrior Competition is a massive two-person obstacle course that has a whole suite of challenges to test sailor's physical and mental resolve…and teamwork. The only real rule is each pair needs one Corsair and one Paladin, which can be made voluntarily or randomly. Along with crossing a pool via spinning logs, swinging and climbing ropes, and plummeting down ziplines, there are a few notable obstacles teams will need to get through.

🚪 Steering a giant ship's wheel in order to lift the door to the next obstacle. Both partners need to take turns, one spinning it upwards and the other continuing down.
🦑 They must piece together the three parts of the Silver Squid Statue, fitting each piece properly and vertically together (have to hear the snap to ensure the pieces connected!) and then placed it into a hole in a door to move on.
⛰️ The final obstacle is called Mount Grog, where the team must climb to the peak of this hill of craggy stone. While there are footholes aplenty, there are also steam vents, "landslides" of small boulder-shaped pillows, and warm "lava" of red-dyed ale, making the terrain slippery and sticky! Mind the steam and ale, they are made of strong liquor and may make those with low tolerance a bit…intoxicated.
🐱‍👤 While some are free to spectate and cheer in the audience, others may volunteer to try and sabotage the rest of the competition by chucking wilted produce, or if you're really lucky, the showrunners will pull you from the audience to hit switches to change up the layout of the map mid-race!

The second event is Capture the Flag and takes place along a long stretch of beach using the remains of two retired ships on either end: one with each of the three masts flying a red flag, the other with three blue flags. Each player will have a small flag of their armada colors attached to a belt on their waist, along with a few very full colored water balloons. The goal is to steal as many of the other team's flags as possible and bring them back to their ship before the hourglass runs out. The only rule is no magic allowed! Have to use good ol' wit and grit. All magic will be suppressed and all weapons taken/forced to be left behind.

💧 Everyone is armed with water balloons of their respective team color. Use them to pelt your opponents and get that flag!
🚩 Some may want to try and score big by capturing one of the ship's flags. But it won't be easy. There will be a "crew" defending their ships and will have cannons filled with giant water balloons, sticky nets, and life preserver rings to deploy against attackers. They can also use the rings to quickly grab their own teammates and pull them to safety.
⛓ There is a jail that caught opponents can be taken to right next to the ship. Either escape, help a caught teammate, or defend it!

After another night of reveling in various taverns (and likely getting into more bar fights), everyone will set sail the following morning, with or without the hangovers. Everyone should be prepared to pitch in their weight, as during the trip, they will learn how to be a deckhand, learning the literal ropes of pitching sails, swabbing decks, and working the galley. There could be other areas they might have access to if they have the skill for it. They will also have a chance to practice their magic. Don't worry, the ships are fitted with special protection that even a stray spell won't cause too much damage (though if it does, they better be prepared to repair and clean it up). And since it will take a few days to get to their respective leviathans, everyone should remember their temporary cabin number. Some may even have roommates.

But the number one rule for both ships is no fighting between members. Save it for when they're back on shore!

ELAH: PALADIN BASE

Compared to the bright colors and bustle of Eltrut, Elah is much more refined and orderly, especially the capital city of Baleen. Tall, sturdy buildings of polished marble and white coral with accents of gold and mother-of-pearl, set in tiered, orderly rings of sandstone-cobbled streets organized by purpose and class. The higher it is, the more affluent, with the Chambers of Council seated at its highest point. Yet there is very little to no poverty, as the citizens are diligent in keeping everything clean and everyone taken care of. That isn't to say there aren't "dirty" parts of the city…but for the most part it's a prosperous, bustling city that takes pride not only in its Paladin force, but in the arts and pursuit of higher education and research. High above one may see gondolas seemingly sailing in the air, but they are just riding the "breath streams'' of Elah that connect to the three blowholes spiracles lining the leviathan's back. In the distant north, one may even catch a glimpse of the main blowhole spiracle releasing a huge stream of water. Access is currently under construction, but new riftfarers will be able to access it soon.

At the center is the city's pride and joy: the Plaza Fontea. Around the outer rim are daily markets and performers to help cultivate the arts and casual business, and there are a number of gardens and ponds for visitors to relax and enjoy. And at its center is a grand mosaic in the great whale's image with a series of "water spouts" that shoot water up through the ground, sometimes to music. However, something is amiss. Without warning, the water is turning different colors and making fart noises. While anyone who might know some engineering is free to help those beneath the fountain to try and figure out what happened and repair it, others can try and catch the culprits who pulled this deplorable prank (hint, bunch of Corsairs, of course).

At the Nodding Kettle, there are some special items that new Paladins can receive. These items are also available on the Rewards Shop, but new members can choose one for free. These items are also special in that they will start at a basic level, but can be upgraded and refined for better effects (for a fee).

🔪 Dowsing Blade: Lvl 1. A short sword that once fully upgraded can find special treasures and precious metals. At level 1, it will only find junk, but who knows? One man's trash is another man's treasure. And rusted metal can still hurt in a fight—
🫧 Bubble Shield: Lvl 1. A shield that will grow in size and strength once fully upgraded and provide protection in the form of a dome. At level 1, it creates a small bubble that covers a small area next to the user and can only take a few hits before it pops.
🔦 Wayfinder Torch: Lvl 1. A torch that burns brighter and can illuminate and find any path to a designated location or exit once fully upgraded. At level 1, it can only illuminate up to a few feet and must be charged with magic to continue.

The educational district is one of the many prides and joys of Elah, and especially the block containing the sprawling, U-shaped Archives framing the massive, gold-framed glass dome of the Conservatory. The core of the Archives is a blocky building of very weathered marble, with two longer and more slender wings; nearly every room inside is dedicated to some sort of specialized library, lecture hall, laboratory, or archaeological restoration room. The Conservatory, meanwhile, is teeming with the rarest of plants, flocks of birds, skittering reptiles, and even small artificial tide pools hosting reef-dwelling fauna and small schools of fish. As new members explore the complex, they may find the new items will come in handy for their tasks.

📖 There's been intel of Corsairs targeting the Archives for their next heist, especially the special collection in the library. Newer Paladins will be asked to guard the library in shifts and keep an eye out for anyone suspicious.
🦤 Oh no, Angus the Dodo has escaped the conservatory again! Capture him and bring him back unharmed. Thankfully he's peaceful and not very smart, but he is easily startled and surprisingly fast. He's a glutton for fruit, nuts, and seeds, and he's infamous for stealing fancy hats, especially if they have feathers on them.
🏰 Reports have come in of a nearby island with ruins of an ancient castle standing on them. Venture out, document the site, and retrieve any artifacts for proper cataloging at the Archives before the Corsairs break or steal anything important.

NOGARD: CORSAIR BASE

While Eltrut and Elah both have relatively smooth surfaces to build on, Nogard's back is covered in jutting ridges and spines. Between the uneven terrain, the transformation between Nogard's living sea form and skeletal land form, and the demon-ridden forest, structures here focus much more on defense and ease of repair or relocation as needed than on matching a set theme. Buildings in Fang are made from a mishmash of old metal, driftwood, and bone, but are often decorated with bright murals and graffiti, drapes of colorful fabrics, and intricate sea glass creations. Taverns and pubs can be found on nearly every corner, loud music and cheers and more than occasionally the sounds of a brawl pouring out from about noon to the wee hours of the morning.

Currently Nogard has settled on a remote island, its skeletal structure nestled deep within the island's cove, creating a natural barrier that will only allow Corsair ships in and out. They will be there for a while, taking advantage of the beasts that inhabit the island and provide valuable materials to be sold. But of course it can get boring, so it's not surprising to see the more "reckless" ziplining from one curved rib to another high above the city. There are also some makeshift fighting arenas for members to test their strength. Those who prefer to actually learn about Nogard's current settlement set out to canvas and explore the island, hoping to find some other ruins or resources that could be useful.

At the Leviathan's Maw, there are some special items that new Corsairs can receive. These items are also available on the Rewards Shop, but new members can choose one for free. These items are also special in that they will start at a basic level, but can be upgraded and refined for better effects (for a fee).

🧥 Camouflage Cloak: Lvl 1. A cloak that once upgraded will allow the wearer to shift and blend into their surroundings. At level 1, it's a bit ratty looking and only useful if hiding in shadows. Even then it's only for a few seconds, but better than none.
🔁 Ring of Returning: Lvl 1. A ring that once upgraded will allow the wearer to return to a specific location upon activation. At level 1, it can only be used once per day and returns you to a public space.
🔀 Ring of Evasion: Lvl 1. A ring that once upgraded will allow the wearer to have increased movement speed and dodging ability. At level 1, it is only effective in avoiding small objects and getting through crowds easier. Not useful for combat until upgraded.

While there are some "respectable" stores and merchants around Nogard, the Black Market is what the city of Fang is best known for. And as part of their initiation, new members are sent to the literal underbelly of the leviathan's skeletal remains where the Black Market exists. Those new free items offered by the Leviathan's Maw may be useful…

💍 Several sellers have put up requests for certain "special rare items" to help restock their wares, but these items are "special" and "rare" for a reason. From needing to kill monsters on the island Nogard has settled on and harvesting for certain materials, to stealing from certain ships and rich houses in Elah (oops).
🏰 On a certain island, there are some castle ruins that has been recently discovered and there are some artifacts and relics that could catch a hefty price if brought back. Just ignore the Paladins who may be excavating…and perhaps take their finds.
📦 Some merchants have special wares that need to be delivered to their clients all over Nogard and on some neighboring islands. Of course, there are many others who might try to steal it…whatever is inside it. Wait—did the box just shake? What, protect the package and deliver it safely!

MANTA BOARD

As mentioned above, usually the Quest Board will be posted separately as we won't normally have logs like these. But for everyone's convenience, we've included it here for additional prompts. Players can either use the quest board here in their toplevels, or create their own open log for them if they prefer to keep it separate and spread things out more.

» GENERAL (4pts)
Dockside Repairs
Reward: 100 dubloons and a serving of cinnamon sugar grog for each day of hard work.

A recent tempestuous storm wreaked havoc upon Eltrut’s main port, leaving many of its docks in dire need of repair.

We are seeking dedicated workers to lend a helping hand in restoring the damaged docks. We encourage those with specialized abilities in carpentry, construction, or any related field (magic, physical or otherwise) to join in the collective effort to repair the docks as soon as possible.

As we are not sure how many newcomers we will have in the future we must restore the port to its former glory, ensuring it serves as a steadfast foundation for our maritime activities! Please help out!

Seahorse Whisperers
Reward: 100 dubloons and a seahorse charm that allows you to bond with gentle sea creatures easily. Doesn’t appear to work well on the angry ones.

Atnam Island has been graced with the arrival of a spirited new batch of young seahorses.

These magnificent creatures are wild and energetic and difficult to tame. We are seeking daring individuals who are up to the challenge of calming and training these giant temperamental seahorses to become reliable and majestic mounts in the water.

Those who dare to embark on this training journey will be rewarded for their efforts. Alongside the profound satisfaction of witnessing the growth and development of these magnificent creatures, you will receive a special token of appreciation for your successful training.

Caviar Conundrum
Reward: 100 dubloons and one tin of orange lanternfish caviar. The caviar itself is said to induce vivid lucid dreams.

A fresh shipment of rare live orange lanternfish has arrived.

There are barrels of them ready to be harvested for their delicious caviar. We are looking for able hands to help collect the fish eggs from this rare fish. You’ll be equipped with the buckets and scoops needed.

However, be forewarned, for these fish are highly territorial and possess a potent electrical bite. Slowly navigating their space and avoiding their electrifying defences will require careful strategy and patience. The tales caution that even a single bite from these remarkable creatures can induce paralysis lasting an hour.

Woody Rarities
Reward: 100 dubloons and a piece of crystal wood that faintly glows when it is about to rain.

A cluster of ancient trees has piqued curiosity, as they appear to defy nature's laws by remaining dry during rainfall.

This phenomenon has caught the attention of keen observers, and we now seek crafty individuals to investigate further.

Venture to the tops of hills or mountains on Eltrut Island and examine these remarkable trees, and gather samples of their purportedly waterproof bark and wood for thorough testing. If proven true, this extraordinary property could revolutionize shipbuilding techniques and open new horizons for maritime exploration.

Bottle Voyage!
Reward: Probably some bad advice. Or a love letter. Or maybe a new friend?

Have you heard of messages in a bottle?

Embrace the sea's powerful enchantment! Pen a heartfelt letter, place it in a glass bottle and release it into the ocean's waves to see what happens.

Rumour has it that within three days, the bottle will return to you with a reply. Discover personal advice, fortunes, or messages from far away. Perhaps even find a lifelong pen pal through this method! Unleash your heartfelt words into the water and let the sea work its wonders!

Results may vary. (Optional: For added flavour attempt posting your bottle message to a random character's inbox.)

» PALADINS (4pts)
Paws of Valor
Reward: A voucher for a free dagger at The Nodding Kettle: Blacksmith and Wares.

Hello, aspiring recruits! We are in need of your assistance to gather iron ore at the local mines, a vital resource for crafting cannonballs to fortify the armada. Although the task at hand may be arduous, it is of utmost importance!

However, we must provide one gentle warning. One of our captains recently lost his pet wildcat, Whiskerbeard, and she has been left to roam freely. Whiskerbeard has a mischievous streak and enjoys playing pranks on new recruits. While she may pose a playful challenge during your ore collection, we trust that you young and agile newcomers will find ways to work around her more violent antics. Please do not harm her or your coin will be cut in half for an entire month!

Five Finger Discount-inued
Reward: The sheer satisfaction of doing the right thing.

Reports have emerged of pickpockets and thieves falling victim to a frustrated shop owner–turned–vigilante, resulting in severed fingers and a growing stain on the Paladin’s reputation for maintaining order among the various port marketplaces.

In order to address this issue and uphold the principles of justice, we need your expertise to delve into the local shops and uncover the truth behind these vigilante actions. It is crucial to identify the shop owner responsible as well as apprehend any theives and restore a sense of balance and fairness to the markets.

However, it is essential to approach this investigation with a focus on fairness and adherence to the law. Our aim is to ensure a just and lawful resolution, and a few fewer fingers being cut off, including yours.

Chasing Tuna Titans
Reward: A casket of fine wine. The bigger the fish, the bigger the casket.

The recent influx of newcomers has led to an increased demand for foodstuffs, placing a strain on our hardworking fishermen. To aid them in meeting these demands, the fishermen have requested assistance from the Paladin's vessels to catch a fresh supply of large tuna fish until new fishermen can be trained.

Join the fishing ships in procuring a bountiful supply of giant tuna fish. Be prepared for the challenge, for these magnificent creatures can grow to sizes ranging from sixty pounds to a staggering four hundred pounds. Good luck reeling them in!

» CORSAIRS (4pts)
Traded Secrets
Reward: A recipe for a dubious-looking soup made to be highly addictive and whatever else you steal from the ship.

There is a popular merchant ship that sells soup out of its main deck that is travelling the seas lately. Its tantalising flavours have ignited such fervent desire that people are willing to engage in battles and even sink ships to secure a coveted bowl. And you’ll be damned if you don’t get a bowl of it before it’s all gone! Find the secrets behind the renowned travelling ship's irresistibly delectable soup!

Surely, there has to be a trick to it. Begin by infiltrating the merchant’s ship, whether by legitimate means or through becoming a discreet passenger and find out what that secret ingredient is. What makes this soup so tantalising that people are willing to give someone a black eye to get it. Is it a frog's legs? Eye of newt? Some kind of illegal drug? Paprika?

Unconventional Couture
Reward: A silk dress of your choice and a pocket gun that can be concealed in a boot.

A renowned mistress from the lantern light district in Naughtilust seeks diverse bodies to showcase her exquisite collection of rare silks and gowns. Don’t worry, she disregards conventional standards and welcomes individuals of any body type or gender, recognizing the beauty in diversity. The more types the better, actually!

However, it is imperative to maintain utmost discretion, as these precious garments were acquired through unconventional means (they were stolen). This gathering is intended for a select group of haughty guests who will appreciate the opulence and allure of these clandestine treasures. So keep it hush-hush! There are dubloons to be squeezed!

Pickpocketing Practice
Reward: A lesson learned for every pocket picked.

With the influx of new scallywags on our shores, the Corsair ships have taken it upon themselves to impart their expertise in the art of pickpocketing. If you're ready to master the craft and enhance your acting, lying, and sleight-of-hand skills, then step forward and join their pickpocketing seminars!

Under the guidance of experienced Corsairs, you'll learn the tricks of the trade, honing your abilities to make a quick dubloon when navigating crowded streets or lively gatherings.

Remember, with great power comes great responsibility. As you venture out to test your newfound skills, exercise caution and subtlety. A successful pickpocket knows the importance of being undetected. The Corsairs will not come to your aid should you find yourself hanging around in the gallows. Or losing a few fingers.

» BOUNTIES (6pts)
Giga Mantis Shrimp
Reward: 500 dubloons.

Said to be as large as a horse with a sting as powerful as a hundred stinging jellyfish. This creature has somehow grown larger than most other mantis shrimp and it has been hunting down and eating the heads of male prey. This might be obvious but I wanted to confirm... for the (🏰) castle ruins prompts, can Paladin and Corsair PCs face off against each other? Or is this more of a PC vs NPC situation?
seawarden: (Default)

[personal profile] seawarden 2023-09-05 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, PCs facing off or begrudgingly working together, if the ruins are treacherous enough. You're also free to buddy up with fellow armada-mates and have them face NPC corsairs too, of course!

Elrut (OTA)

‣Sailor Warrior Competition

[ Now this looks awesome! Rikku's eyes sparkle with delight as she sets eyes on the course, and she immediately starts looking around for anyone who appears to be prim and proper...ish. When she spots a potential mark, she jumps up and waves. ]

Hey! Are you a Paladin? Wanna do that awesome course with me?

‣Seahorse Searching!

[ Now this mission's up her alley! Rikku is always prepared for a dive, and...ooh, she thinks she spots one in the distance. Still, she lowers her voice to a whisper, leaning close to someone nearby. Time to start prepping for a dive in the water. ]

I heard they're pretty tough to catch. Think we can lure one with snacks?

Nogard (Open to all Corsairs)

‣Fly Free

[ What draws her eye as soon as they reach the base? The ziplines, of course! She takes a few moments to watch the people already up there, her mind seemingly made up. ]

That looks awesome. You could see so much from up there...maybe we'll find a path to look for clues!

‣Black Market

[ Yeesh, this is definitely not her kind of place...but maybe it's not so bad? Sometimes when society pushes you out, you fall on hard times...she knows that. She's been there. But there's a limit to what she's willing to do.

Somehow, that has her carefully taking a shaking package for delivery. She starts to make her way to the outskirts of town, tightening her grip on the box with holes in it. It shakes more and she yelps, staring down at the package. ]

...O-kay, whatever's in here is probably pretty freaky.

A - What Do You Do With a Gutsy Sailor?

[The course is ridiculous.

Roxas is a pretty athletic kid, all things considered but he's also still getting used to having his own body again. (It's a whole thing). But the logs and ziplines and everything are starting to wear on him. It's one thing to run an obstacle course. It's another thing to add puzzles.

So he's kind of staring at the ship wheels with a look of incredulity on his face.]

We gotta do what?

B - Boat and Base both start with B

[i.The similarities with Roxas and Sora only go so far. Sora is very much the pirate guy. Roxas? Not so much. And it very easily becomes obvious to Roxas that he and boats do not really agree. Once they're away from land and more out in the open water, does the rocking of the waves and vessel make it clear that he's not going to have a good time.

Also, it's a lot of ocean. And open water is kind of scary.

So while on the boat, Roxas can mostly be found below decks or in the galley. He's trying to be helpful, but seasickness is also a thing.]

ii. Once they've made it to the base, things get a little better. At the very least, there's solid ground and less rocking. And once he's recovered enough, Roxas is more than happy to explore.

And while he's supposed to be on guard duty at the Archives, it's a little hard not to get distracted by everything around him. He's never been in a place like this and the closest thing that comes to memory is a place he doesn't really want to think about right now. So he might have snuck off to a library to run his hands along a bookshelf. Or look at animals in the conservatory.]

C - Fishing for Dummies

[Fishing shouldn't be to difficult. Roxas has seen it done before. It's pretty straightforward. And while it does mean being on a boat, he's pretty sure he can handle it. He hopes he can handle it.

And he's sort of got the basics with nets and things. Maybe he could succeed in this job with enough practice. But those are big fish, and Roxas? For all his combat strength, he's not a very big guy. And all it takes is one big pull for him to lose his balance and fall into the water.

He really needs to learn how to swim.]

[I] SOMEONE SAID COMPETITION? (OTA)
[For someone like Ashi who spent their whole life growing up running obstacle courses this particular two-person one greatly intrigues her. Her memories of those childhood obstacle courses might not be good ones but Ashi will forever favor physical challenges over all others any day.

Spinning logs don't stop her, climbing ropes are a breeze and she barely seems to blink before she leaps on the zipline without having the least know how about what it is.

Then she makes it to the giant ship wheel. This is the first thing she's come across that needs teamwork and for a moment she looks baffled that she alone can't turn the massive wheel. In fact it's so baffling she doesn't even seem to consider it might need an extra hand until someone else comes upon the same obstacle.

When she looks to them it's with a confused expression.]

I think it's stuck.

[II] OOOO, ARTIFACTS! (OTA)
[To be bluntly honest Ashi has no problem with purloining these particular artifacts. They don't really belong to anyone aside from those long dead. She's particularly turned down the offer to join in on the Paladin library heist because it felt too much like stealing to her.

While some of the other Corsairs are purloining and running off Ashi is perhaps making a mistake in just sort of lingering around. She knows what it's like to have to sneak around enemy groups but she can't quite see the Paladins that way yet ... or maybe ever.

At the moment she's studying a hefty looking jar intently, trying to divine what it was used for and who might have used it just from looking at it.]

[III] UNCONVENTIONAL COUTURE (CORSAIRS)
[Now Ashi has managed to buy one set of clothes thus far after scraping up what money she's collected thus far alongside a decent discount while still in Eltrut. It couldn't hurt though to have a second outfit for free to wear when she needs it and sure, a weapon sounds great too!

Of course she didn't exactly realize what a fancy silk gown entailed. The one she's been dropped into is just -- she keeps adjusting the skirt, the sleeves, all of it. And finally with a scowl she huffs out:]

There's too much fabric!

[IV] WILDCARD
[Got a prompt you want to try that I didn't use here? Or anything else? Feel free to drop a prompt here. You can also hit me up through PMs, plurk ([plurk.com profile] goodluckstarfighter) or discord (goodluckstarfighter) for your plotting needs!]

Sorey l Tales of Zestiria l Paladin

[personal profile] historiology 2023-09-06 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
Competition:

[Sorey, for his part. For all that he is new to ships and all. He's athletic and agile enough to more or less mostly manage this pretty easily. It's not so different to his grappling and swinging around to get through ruins and such back home sometimes. The ropes and ziplines. He is also used to working together with others, or at least, one other, with Mikleo, so teamwork is something he is easily able to adjust to in helping out whoever he is partnered with for this competition.]

Okay, so. I think one of us steers up and the other down? To lift open that door there. I'm guessing.

Elah:

[Sorey notes that this place seems rather nice. That everyone seems happy and cared for. In that sense it might almost remind him a little of Ladylake. Alisha's kingdom, the capital. That she does her best to care for her people as well. He glances at the gondolas with fascination and curiosity, wanting to try it and watching them, observing their travel.

He picks up one of the bubble shields, since he already has his ceremonial sword. And that way he figures he can use it to protect others as well, as he wanders through the new area. The archives of course get his attention. With stories of Corsairs planning a heist, he doesn't mind being roped in to help guard. He's not sure exactly on what to expect or how far these Corsairs might go but the point is to keep the records safe, he figures. Hopefully without anyone else getting hurt. He turns to the other on guard nearby, checking in on them.]

Holding up okay? Not too tired or anything? I have some of my hot drink left if you need.

Wildcard:

Jarlaxle Baenre | Forgotten Realms | Corsair

[personal profile] acheat 2023-09-06 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Gutsy Ultimate Sailor

[Yeah okay something something 'teamwork' something something blah blah he was listening he swears. He'll do the teamwork thing pinkie promise, but like... LIKE... Whoever he's teamed up with, whether it be by chance or by design, would suddenly find themselves posed with a question as the brigand thoughtfully contemplates the course.]

Are you the gambling sort? I have a friendly wager I'd like to make.

[Pinkie promise teamwork will happen super prommy. He does wanna win after all.]

Capture the Flag

[Offense]
[What do you mean no magic allowed? Well that's not fair, how's he gonna cheat effectively like that?! Now he'll have to find other ways of being a jammy cheating scrub.

Beware the shadows and watch your head, lest you find yourself on the receiving end of a bonce based double balloon bash brouhaha, the drow isn't about to take on any fight even remotely fair. And watch your balloon supply while you're at it, or you might find yourself a bit lighter on ammo after all the chaos.
]

[Defense]
[Who's that scrambling up the side of his team's ship? Well it's Jarlaxle, looking a bit worn out and soggy. Maybe someone finally got a taste of his own cheap medicine. Now would be an excellent time to take out any frustrations he might have caused on him, he definitely doesn't look armed at the moment.

The ship, however... He hesitates for a moment, shaking out his hat and looking none too pleased with the situation. It doesn't look like a particularly strategic spot to stop. If one doesn't pay attention to where he is, juxtaposed to a sticky net hanging in the rigging, and an open porthole of course.
]

[Nogard]

[Out and About]
[Jarlaxle can be found almost anywhere. Of course he'll have to try out ziplining, that was the very first thing he did here. He could try and rationalize it, claim that it's necessary to know all possible modes of travel, potential escape routes, so on and so forth, and that wouldn't be a lie. But in all honesty the biggest reason was because hee hee hoo hoo zipline fun.

That also happened to be at least a partial motivation for the rest of his activities here. Whether it be patronizing the taverns and trying to get to know everyone present, watching and participating in a few fights at a few arenas, or even trying to rustle up a few traveling companions for a bit of exploring. Forging friendships and alliances were important, vital even for survival, but also above all and most importantly: it's fun.
]

[Artifacts]
[He's got himself a fancy new level one ring of returning, because you can never have too many ejection seats so to speak, especially when you're him. It's on him, somewhere, undoubtedly equipped, because something tells him he's going to need it.

No Jarlaxle did not in fact miss the Paladins booking it from those ruins, that should have been his first sign that this was a job for someone he wouldn't miss. But unfortunately he was in short supply of red shirts to sacrifice in the name of profit, and he was getting kind of bored. So on top of venturing into whatever nightmarish hell these ruins happened to have in store for him, he's also just going to... take all these conveniently abandoned items left behind. How useful, he doesn't even have to go digging around for these! His now, one person's traumatic mentally scarring event was another person's payday.

He's still just outside those ruins, taking inventory of his Totally Not Stolen Actually Legally Acquired Now items, he'll get to the actual exploration part of this exploration quest as soon as he decides how much of this stuff is useless junk.

Jill Warrick | Final Fantasy XVI | Corsair

[personal profile] tilfrosset 2023-09-06 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
» competition

[Jill is frowning at the sight in front of her. She's seen a lot of strange things in her life, but this obstacle course is a brand new one. The spinning logs are making her dizzy, she's only handled ropes a few times in her life, and never has she ever seen a zipline in motion.

But she's also never been one to back down from a challenge, especially one that seems to have a meaning of camaraderie behind it. With a deep breath, Jill speaks to whoever is standing nearby while busying herself with the arduous task of twisting her long hair into a messy bun.]

Well, I supposed the only thing to do is to just do it. Would you like to join me?

» dockside repairs

[For someone who could be mistaken as a current noblewoman, manual labor is something Jill is more than familiar with. She's helped around the Hideaway when needed, even though she left most of the hammering and nailing to the resident carpenters. A little hard work doesn't hurt anyone and so Jill finds herself asking to be pointed towards where she'll do the most good. A few portworkers give her a good onceover as if they don't expect someone of her caliber to be of any use, but before anybody can turn her away, she steps towards the very end of the damaged dock and holds a hand out over the ocean.

Suddenly, there's the unmistakable crackling sound of ice being formed and the sea underneath the dock has frozen over a few feet ahead. It's a solid surface, firm enough for a few people to stand on as needed, which means less risk of someone falling off the edge and probably drowning and hopefully making repairs faster and easier.]

As I said, I would like to help where I can.

[Just ignore the fact she's flexing her right hand open and closed repeatedly as if she's working out a cramp.]

» unconventional couture

[Please do not ask how Jill has found herself in the lantern light district. It surely is not her first time in this sort of area, but really, she's still feeling all out of sorts.

What's not helping is after being convinced to help the mistress in her little fashion show, is the dress given to Jill. The color is not her usual; when's the last time she's worn red? Jill can't remember, to be honest; might as well be never. Aside from that, lack of sleeves, no proper collar, and straps that could stand to be thicker seem to show off more skin than Jill is used to. Oh, but one cannot forget (no matter how much she's tried already) the leg length split up the skirt portion, giving all and sundry with working eyes a good view of her bare thigh every time she shifts. It's by sheer miracle her smallclothes don't announce themselves along the way.

Jill's cheeks are just as crimson as the dress, but apparently that blush makes her look more alive in the mistress' opinion and the mistress herself gives Jill a little push (okay, it's practically a shove) to get her out from fitting area and into the room proper.]

I'm going, I'm going. There's no need to push me!

[Talk about being yanked out of her comfort zone.]

🗡️ i. sailor warrior competition

[How she got roped into this is anyone's guess. She'd meant to look into it to see what—or rather, who—she could find. Her search for skilled riftfarers continues, and honestly, as stupid and childish as she thinks all of this is, what it is good for is showing her those that are skilled both physically and mentally. Yet somehow, she never expected that her hand would end up being forced into participating when she'd been grabbed from the audience.

The hosts were stubborn and threatening them with her sword did her no good at all when they only laughed in her face. And so, here she is, now doing this out of pure spite. Fine, if they were going to make her participate, then she would just fucking ruin it for everyone—]

a. teaming up. [If you are the unfortunate Paladin who just got paired up with her, then apologies in advance. She is ready to obliterate this course, though not in the way anyone is hoping for her to, so if you want to win, she'll need some convincing before she ends up breaking something. That, or she's not above cheating to get to the end as fast as possible while doing as much damage as possible.]

You should know that I am not in this to win.

[Well. Technically speaking.]

b. corsair vs. corsair. [Said cheating also involves sabotaging the efforts of another team whenever she can. Yes, she's here to spitefully make this a miserable experience for everyone—this is what they get for dragging her into these stupid games. So, sorry to the NPC Paladin on both ends because she sees whichever fellow Corsair she keeps running into as a rival.

And as she arrives at the ship's wheel, she pulls out her sword and raises it at whoever arrives at the same time.]

You will take two steps back. Three if you'd rather not test my blade.

[Yes, she will fight you right here. Rules? What rules? Aren't they supposed to be pirates?]

🗡️ ii. castle ruins

[Corsair or Paladin, Benedikta does not concern herself with sides or titles here when there is a hefty sum of money on the line. The wonderful thing about this is that she can sit back and let other people find the treasures to take back, and then simply try to take it from them.

And with that ring of returning that she happily accepted, all she would need to do is get her hands on it and then be whisked away by whatever magic it holds.

So, anyone who has found an artifact or a relic will be greeted with the sound of steel being drawn and an equally sharp, silky voice to accompany it.]

Very good. Now... hand it over.

[ALTERNATIVELY: feel free to try stealing a treasure from her that she's found, but she will put up quite a fight!]

🗡️ iii. manta board
a. seahorse whisperers. [It would seem that within these seahorses, Benedikta has truly met her match—wild, temperamental, hard to tame (but don't anyone dare tell her this). What she thought would be an easy 100 dubloons and perhaps a new mount on the water turned out to be anything but that, and this difficult woman has found an equally difficult seahorse to contend with.

And though she might not ask or want anyone's help, she certainly looks like she could use it.

As the seahorse splashes around in the shallow shores, it kicks and flaps its tail, spraying Benedikta with water as she tries to "talk it down".]

Well, what is it that you want!? You already took all the food I had—!

[Yeah. Someone should come an intervene before a fight breaks out.]

b. giant mantis shrimp. [Of course the one time she doesn't think to drag Cidolfus along with her for something—not that she would be willing to, but if it's necessary—she is up against a beast that is supposedly weak to lightning of all things. Well, that's fine. She has a sharp sword and even sharper reflexes, so as soon as she sees a shadow lurking beneath the water, she turns to whoever has come with her.]

Ugh, finally. Brace yourself.

[And that is all the warning anyone will get (and they should be glad they got one at all) before a large wind sweeps in, kicking up water in all directions until the mantis shrimp is revealed just below the surface, hissing and swinging its large pincers at the sudden rush of air, and it looks hungry—]

🗡️ iv. wildcard

[ None of these work? Feel free to leave a different starter below! I'm open to pretty much anything (minus the horned dolphin since I have plans for that already)! I also have my plotting comment if you'd like to hash something out! Or feel free to poke me over at [plurk.com profile] crystariums or in the game discord! I will try to mark FFXVI spoilers as they come up. ]

Cidolfus Telamon | Final Fantasy XVI | Corsair

[personal profile] ramuhs 2023-09-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
sailor warrior
[How he got roped into this, bloody hell if he knows. Feels like he might be too old to be playing these kinds of things... Don't mind him when he has to pace himself when it comes to those long jumps. He'll make it! With uh. A little bit of stumbling and close calls. Look he's well fit but he's not as spry as he used to be.

1. Silver Squid Statue. After finally getting through the initial obstacles, Cid looks around the room. It looks like saboteurs have gotten in because the pieces are just all over the place, and in some very hard to reach place. Like on top of a tall column.]

...They really didn't want to make this easy. Right, how good are you at climbing? Might be able to give you a boost so you can reach that ledge over there.

[2. Mount Grog. Well this is... Honestly he's not sure how he feels about this as they make their way up, especially when a gush of ale suddenly pours down, some of it splashing on them if they're not quick enough to get out of the way.]

What a waste of good alcohol... Should be drinking it, not dumping it on people. Though I can think of a few who would drink it anyway, hah. —Whoops, mind that vent there!

[Fortunately he has pretty good tolerance so he won't be too affected. Which may be good if he needs to help his partner through!]

capture the flag
[Right, he's just going to leave it to the younger people to run out there and try and get each other's flags. So he'll be up on the upper decks of ship, keeping "watch." Which is really more him holding a mug of ale and casually sipping as he watches everyone else running around. What? It's kind of entertaining and reminds him of the old days, for better or worse. He'll throw a few words of encouragement and yell if he spots someone getting too close, but all in all, kind of chaperoning.

1. Boat Defense. Sometimes he'll help man the boat and have a bit of fun with it, taking the cannons and blasting at will towards any who come near. Of course being such a zealous cannoneer, he's going to need some refills. So if there's anyone around—]

Running low on ammo, better get some more balloons, quick!

[2. Strategy to take the Paladin's ship. How did he get here who knows, but after watching for a while, Cid has noticed a few things. And his old strategist self has kicked in, prompting him to gather around anyone who was willing to listen. Good thing he used to lead army troops, eh?

Crouched down in the sand sheltered by the shadow of the ship he draws with a stick, two circles for the ship and lines and triangles to indicate movement and groups.]

They won't let us in easy, so here's what we need. I've been watching, and they have a blind spot over there by the stern with some rocks we can use as cover to sneak by. We need a group to create a diversion, keep focus away from there, and the others come around and sneak in. From there, if we can get the ones in jail out, they can form a second diversion to keep everyone on the ship busy while the best climbers go up there and get those flags. At that point the goal is to get out, buuuut...

[He draws lines along the sand, from the center where the main "battlefield" is with arrows towards the Paladin's ship.]

The Paladins will be the first to start pulling back to defend their ship, and when that happens the rest of the group can swarm in.

[A grin as he looks up from drawing in the sand, tapping the circle used to mark the Paladin's group.]

We play our cards right, and this game is ours.

[Cid. Please. But hey if anyone actually wants to try this, by all means—]

black market
[After getting a Ring of Returning and exploring Nogard a bit, Cid makes his way to the Black Market, curious to see what all they have. He's no stranger to the atmosphere, but Lady Charon would surely put all these blokes to shame. But well, time to start making connections and see where this all goes.

1. Special Requests. Cid is more than capable to handle any "special monster hunting," and since he's curious about the island itself, he can kill two birds with one stone to use this chance to explore around. With his two blades and lightning magic, he'll be able to help anyone wanting to fell a rare or strong beast or two. Could use this for either of the two Bounties as well: Giga Mantis Shrimp and Horned Dolphin. As for robbing either some rich noble's mansion or ship, well. So long as no innocents are hurt, he can lend a hand with that. Has a bit of experience, anyway. That and he may want to keep an eye out to make sure no one gets into too much trouble.

2. Special Delivery. Another "simple" task he's familiar with, along with being familiar with the dangers of carrying such a special package. What he isn't used to is—

THUMP!]

Did you hear that?

[Whether it's on a boat or on a wagon, there are some odd thumps and banging from where their "special little package" is, and as they go to look, the box will JUMP and start rolling around. What the hell is inside this thing!? (OPTIONS: a) creepy magic artifact, b) random monster limb, c) monster egg, d) something of your choosing!)]

[personal profile] ramuhs 2023-09-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)

(a late night rendezvous on the stormbringer with ffxvi spoilers)
[After their...rather abysmal parting on that first day in Eltrut, Cid had kept his distance from Benedikta. Granted, that was mostly on her part than his, but given how they did part and how things have been shaken because of it, it was likely for the best. Both needed space, time to think, and for at least himself, figure out what to do. Especially now that he's met with everyone else that has arrived, and no doubt Benedikta and Barnabas have met them all by now as well. Well, except Joshua—that is one boy that needs to be kept hidden at all costs.

Regardless there's been a lot to unpack these past few days, along with his own coming to terms of his own little "situation." Since he was flung into this world right after his death, he never really processed it. If anything, he just doesn't...even really feel it. How could he? One minute he was closing his eyes, taking his last breath, and the next he woke up and found himself on a boat, later to learn he's in another world completely and not some afterlife as he initially thought. And to find Benedikta like that...

Well, maybe it's a good thing. On the one hand, he already accepted his death and can more easily adapt and just focus at what comes at him. If this ends up being his new "life," then might as well enjoy it while he can. Or until this world decides to spit his soul back out, he supposes. And part of that...is dealing with Benedikta. If Barnabas weren't around this would be a lot easier, but he knows who she'll run to first—and it won't be him. It's a bitter, disappointing feeling, especially after everything and knowing she kept that pendant, but he does have a hunch that he's starting to drive that wedge between them—just like Barnabas drove that wedge between him and her originally. He doesn't know what he really hopes for here, but at the very least he wants to pull Benedikta away from him.

He couldn't last time. He'll be damned if he lets this happen again.

But he can tell she's flighty (like always) and everything is very raw right now, so he takes it slow.

Starts with sending her a text that first night around evening, checking on her. Of course there's no response, nor does he expect it. Then it comes with another text an hour so later with the name of the inn and his room number in case she needed anything. Again, no response as expected. However, he did notice that she was reading them—immediately, at that. So she's checking them. A good sign, he hopes. So he'll only send one last text that night:]

Sleep well.

[With this message he had hesitated, and once again waited until he saw the change marking it read. Only then does a soft, sad smile appear before he puts everything away, thoughts heavy of what it is he wants and what he should do. Thoughts of that day. That little teddy bear charm all he needs to know that there is something still there.

Things are so broken and cracked between them, but maybe...just maybe...

So. He won't be too much of an annoying nuisance, and he'll only send her one message a day. And it's always with a picture, showing a place he thought was neat or she might like. Sometimes it's just the picture, sometimes it's with a brief caption or observation. At first he did feel a bit silly, but then he got used to it. In fact, it reminded him to buy a journal so he could chronicle things. Sure he could do it on the phone, but...typing on this thing was annoying for more than just a message, and he liked the feel of ink and paper. So he saved his deeper thoughts for in there.

And she still read them. She never blocked him. Maybe she doesn't know how, but she could have ignored all these messages. Even if she never responded, she was looking at them. Looking at them with what he assumes (and hopes) is the same phone case and charm he got her. Maybe he's being silly, maybe he's being stupid. After what they've been through, anyone else would have rightfully just left it as is, especially when she once again made the wrong choice.

Maybe he really is being strung along and needs to give up.

But he's not so sure. Not yet. He still sees that chance. And it's perhaps his last. Their last. Should this really be it, then... Well.

As he sits in the chair with his boots propped up against the table and stares up at the ceiling in the dark room, feeling the ship sail through the waters as it makes its way to Nogard, Cid reflects on all of this while keeping an ear out to the footsteps that pass by the door.

After all.

This isn't his room and he's decided that now is as good of a time as any to deal with the owner.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 082)

Eustace | Granblue Fantasy | Corsair

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2023-09-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
i: fetch the flag
[Eustace didn't really care too much about the game. It's a shame they didn't have any water guns—he would have set himself up to snipe anyone from the ship. As it is, he'll just throw these water balloons down at anyone attempting to reach the bridge like he does with his grenades—with extreme accuracy, aiming for the heads and chests. What it's just water they can handle—

Meanwhile, his dog Valo will be out there having fun...pulling off blue flags. Look, the rules said no magic. Said nothing about animal companions. Maybe some will be fooled by his friendliness and try to pet him—which will be the perfect time to strike. Or perhaps a fellow Corsair is in trouble and Valo will come to their aid, helping distract the Paladin. Even if Valo does get hit by a balloon, no worries! He'll take it in stride and probably enjoy it.

...Eustace, however, will counter with a vengeance, so anyone who manages to hit Valo with a balloon will receive like five or more in return.]

ii. black market: castle ruins
[Eustace has no intention in the getting in the way of those who are here for legitimate reasons, such as research and proper excavation. So unlike the other Corsairs, he's just here to look and see what could be found.

But since he is a Corsair, he still may get into a scuffle—assuming he's mistaken for one. He'll be carefully examining a few artifacts, such as this jeweled chalice or going through a room with a careful eye, so it would look like he might be targeting to steal something. On the other hand, he might be mistaken for a Paladin instead since he'll often put something back with care instead. He might even assist a Paladin if they are trying to catalogue something or reach an artifact and he happens to be around. So a Corsair might think he's on the other side instead.]

iii. various quests
[Just a few quests he'll be partaking in:

1. Dockside Repairs. Seems easy enough. Grab a hammer, nail down some planks, carry them too and fro. He'll even have help from Valo who will fetch and bring back any small tools or materials he can carry, happy to help anyone around assisting with the repairs.

2. Caviar Conundrum. Now this one Eustace might...be able to cheat a little. Because the gloves he wears is actually made of material that nullifies electricity, so he can dip his hands in and not worry about either of the fish's defenses or their bites. That said, he's still going to take care here.]

I can handle the fish. Just scoop out the eggs quickly.

3. Giga Mantis Shrimp. With his ability to wield lightning and armed with a rifle that shoots lightning that can pierce, Eustace is well-equipped to handle this kind of bounty. Of course there's the matter of finding it, but until then, might as well get to know who he's working with. But once they do, Eustace will keep the target in his sights, covering anyone who tries to get in closer and provide openings to those he's working with.]

wildcard catchall
[All other prompts are open! He will definitely be exploring Nogard with Valo, so if just want a general meet-up or excuse to meet his dog, go for it! He'll also be practicing his magic outside of the city as he hunts for those special requests for the Black Market.

Feel free to contact me via PM or [plurk.com profile] laenavesse to plot or discuss more if needed!]

[The games were definitely an... interesting surprise, but not an unpleasant one. Tifa would always support a little bit of teamwork or healthy competition, especially to help foster the relationship between the two armadas—the one thing about this world that she didn't like. The separation felt unnecessarily black and white, with people being far more complicated than simply corsairs and paladins... But who is she to complain? She's certainly not someone who can change that, so all she can do is try to help bolster the relationship between them.

And seeing one particular "Corsair" and his dog has piqued her interest. He doesn't look like he's participating and she's also just here to cheer everyone on, so she figures what better time to go up and say—]

Long time no see.

[It's only been a few days, but she says it anyway, and Valo barks in greeting upon seeing her approach, so Eustace will no doubt know that someone is coming, and she'll oblige the pup by giving him a good scratch on the head.]

It's pretty neat... this whole thing they've got going on, huh?

[The fact that this whole obstacle course was built is impressive, to say the least, and it's been fun watching people test their wits and strength with it.]

Eltrut
🃏Elsewheres
[Turo may honestly have managed to shy away from the competitions outside of observing, but before the final call to set sail with the rest of the Paladins aboard the Royal Fortune, he could be found around Eltrut- just about anywhere.

Including the tavern, simply walking around, or once more observing the work of Knistej within Inkwave.]

🌳Woody Rarities
[Long hikes was something Turo was practically made for, and the sight of the trees was quite the sight to behold; fully worth the trip as the man stood for a moment, looking them over as he soon enough sat out some outcropping of rock. Taking samples as requested could come in a moment-

Man had a notebook already in hand, carefully sketching out the trees as he saw them, focusing a few side drawings on details he could focus on. Notes on the coloration beside them.]

What remarkable trees- whether rumors are true or not.

Royal Fortune
Hands on Deck
[Turo had the sleeves of his shirt rolled up, not one to shirk a job given to him no matter what it may be. Lab coat neatly folded and set out of the way as he was making sure ropes were firmly in place.

Or sitting back to take a 'break' once a deck was well scrubbed.

Or perhaps he was being shown out of the galley and to where he could more help hand out the food once it was prepared. Looking rather apologetic for that one. He was a scientist, but handling food before it was cooked was clearly something best left out of his hands. This he could help with well, and cleaning after.]

🚪Cabins
[The door to Turo's assigned cabin was somewhat ajar, and if someone either peeked or walked in for whatever reason they would spot him sitting on the edge of the bed and—]

Please remain still, this will not take long. I need to ensure you and the others are still doing well.

[—one hand was rested on what looked like a somewhat over three-foot-tall robotic 'moth' hovering in front of him as he checked it over. let me know if you want this man as a roomy!]

🃏🌊
[It isn't difficult to come across Turo anywhere on the ship, keeping busy or, well.

Often times he could be found leaning against the ship's railing, simply staring off into the horizon. Watching the waves. Enjoying the stars late at night simply sitting up on deck and just out of the way.]

Elah
🃏⛲📚
[The moment that this man found the Archives of the Conservatory? Oh, he was goin to send hours upon hours there- for as long as he would be allowed, pouring over books and anything written he could get his hands on. Taking notes and even having sketches here and there of whatever he felt necessary as he went. It reminded him so much of—

Even time was spent in the Conservatory with that notebook of his, pages filled with more sketches and notes of every piece of interesting flora and fauna there. Eyes alight with delight.

This was like a dream.]

There are so many different species here- [There was excitement in his voice.]

Other General Stuff
Seahorse Whisperers
[That bodysuit of his was on again, knowing well that it worked well as a wetsuit that allowed for Turo to be in the water with the young seahorses- and the few whose attention he had caught.

There was actual laughter from him, standing in waist deep water as one moved under his hands there in the water.]

See? No harm meant, and you are quite strong already. I see you doing well as you grow.

[Not to say he hadn't gotten dragged around in deeper waters with a few others, but he'd done well in hanging on and letting them tire. Mostly.

It's fine.]

🃏Wildcard
[Bring your own starter here- or a mix of anything above can go here as well if something above needs a little bending. Hit me up for anything else!]

I. Legends of Gutsy Ultimate Sailor Warrior Competition

[To a guy like Toge, this kind of thing looks really really fun. It’s like a game and training all wrapped into one. The only problem is that he doesn’t know any Paladins.

So, he’s hovering around the start of the course where they get to register and all that nonsense, looking for someone, anyone.

Toge walks up and waves his hands at anyone that looks like an upstanding individual and not well, riff raff like him.

He seems like he’s smiling behind the high collar of his jacket and he gestures to the entrance.]

Tuna tuna. [So, who wants to team up?]

II. Capture the Flag

[Run run run, catch Toge if you can! He’s armed with exactly three water balloons left and a Corsair flag attached to his waist.

He’s good at weaving and being serpentine.

Catch his attention and he just might have to use his water balloons on you!

Being a pirate so far is very fun.]

III. Leviathan’s Maw

[Toge is looking over the options critically. Does he want to blend in with the shadows? Yes and no, sometimes he does. He’s pretty quiet in general though.

That ring of evasion though...?

The shopkeeper won’t understand him so he pulls out his phone to utilize the text-to-speech.]

Which one do you think is the best one?

[The shopkeeper might roll their eyes and ignore him, but anyone else doesn’t have to. The voice is a bit robotic and unnatural for Toge’s tastes, but it does get his message across – even if he’s not being listened to.]

IV. Black Market Deliveries

[Toge doesn’t even ask questions. Making deliveries? Doesn’t sound so hard, and he could probably use the coin. He should start amassing some right?

He’s got a box up on his shoulder and he’s weaving through the crowd. Maybe he needs help.

Or maybe he needs help being relieved of his burden.]

V. Manta Board

[Toge is interested in checking out the seahorses and communing with them in a silent, but potentially effective way. As a patient guy, he’s also going to be good for getting the caviar sorted.

And Toge would love to know the secrets of the soup. One can find him trying to infiltrate the ship, be they enemy or ally.]

VI. Wildcard

Note: Toge has an affliction where he speaks in a rice ball cipher, so expect so very odd conversation.]

[ While Rikku may seemed convinced, there is someone close by who's face seems to scrunch at the thought. He frowns, folding his arms over his chest while lifting his eyes to the ziplines.

He wasn't particularly afraid of heights, but something about them just screamed unstable.

Don't suppose you'll find any clues on the ground first?

I. Legends of Gutsy Ultimate Sailor Warrior Competition

[Dion sees this competition and thinks partly first that he’d probably be quite good at it, and as a second, he probably shouldn’t actually participate.

So, he’ll sit on the sidelines with a cup of water in hand just to watch the festivities.

The way he carries himself, it’s quite obvious he’s not a Corsair at all, but a Paladin. Anyone approaching Dion will get a sidelong glance and a tilt of the head.]

Afternoon. [Perhaps any Corsair members can convince him to participate.]

II. Capture the Flag

[Despite the fact Dion can be a bit of a wet blanket, he will participate in Capture the Flag, after all there is need for someone to be a stickler of a prison warden and that completely fits the bill.

The fact he’s leaning against the outside bars with a bucket of water balloons propped up on a stool at his hip...well never mind that.]

I advise you turn back. [He deftly tosses one balloon in the air and catches it in the same hand.] Unless you want to get very wet.

III. Nodding Kettle

I believe I would like to get the dowsing blade. [Since it’s free, although Dion can’t help but look at it like a trinket. He doesn’t need a blade, he has a lance attached to his back.]

Does it really work? [The torch might be good for some, but master of light, he doesn’t need that.]

IV. Manta Board

[Dion is not afraid to get his hands dirty, so he’ll be helping out with the dockside repairs. He can haul wood and hammer a nail just as good as the next guy.

He will also gladly face down Whiskerbeard in an effort to get at the ore. Surely he can handle one mischievous pet, can’t he?]

cut for length & ffxvi spoilers.
[It had been a whirlwind of a day. An understatement if she's ever heard one. After finding out about her death, she ran. She ran and ran until her legs couldn't carry her, and then she ran some more. It was one thing to wake up in a strange world locked up in a room dressed in rags. To wake up and discover that her powers are gone, and she doesn't remember anything past priming.

But to learn that after all of that... after everything... she was dead?

She didn't want to believe him, and for a while, she refused to. She tried to tell herself again and again that it was all a lie. That he had some other motive for doing it... but the more she denied it, the harder it became to believe. He would lie to her—she knows that—but Cidolfus would not lie to her about that.

And thus, that bitter contempt awakened again—the selfsame one that had dissolved into nothing but pure fear when she lost Garuda. The contempt that only burned with a vengeance when she raised her sword at a man in that tavern, only to discover that it was none other than Barnabas himself. The man that would stoke those fires effortlessly, that would prey upon her doubts as she worked through them in her head...

He would kindle them into that burning flame until he burned away all that fear and left her with its hot, ashen remains.

And she would use that flame to fuel her. If she truly was dead in Valisthea, then she would just have to make up for it here. She would claw her way out of death's cold embrace just like she had her life before, and she would survive. Damn the world, damn the people, damn Barnabas and Cidolfus and all the other Dominants that have trickled in.

She would live.

Of course, that involved choosing a side—the side that would grant her that ability the easiest. And it so happened to be the side that she was most terrified of. Without Garuda, without her powers awakened to their fullest potential, how long will it be until Barnabas sees through her and realizes that she is nothing like what she was? That she had lost Garuda, and that she was scared?

No.

She would play the part, and she would play it perfectly. Just as she always has.

But as night finally falls and she finds herself once more alone with these thoughts that she'd tried so hard to push away come rushing back, that dam weathered by all that's happened that it simply crumbles under the weight.

In one hand, she holds that pendant so tight that it nearly cuts into her palm. And in the other, her phone. The duck charm sways gently as she pulls it out and she taps on the screen, trying to remember how to maneuver through everything until she finds the messages, the only ones on there being those from Cidolfus earlier that day. That string of stupid faces that she had sent...

Slowly, her fingers begin to tap at the letters on the screen.

Cidol

She backspaces.

You

Backspaces again.

I'm

And again.

What the fuck is she even doing!? Why did she even think for a fucking second that it was a good idea to message him, regardless of its contents!? It was a terrible idea. She keeps reminding herself of what he had done—how he had hurt her once, and then again today by keeping that information from her for as long as he had. Again and again, he betrays her. He leaves her behind. He hurts her...

She hates him. She hates him. She hates him! So fucking much. Why did she think, even for a second, that maybe things had changed? Why did she want that? How fucking foolish had she been? So blinded by her fear of this new world that she clung to the one familiar thing in this place, only to have him stab her in the back again.

Was he ever planning on telling her? Or was he going to keep it a secret with the hopes that it would placate her? She doesn't know, and she isn't sure she wants the answer to that.

No. She is where she should be now. At her king's side. He would ensure her survival...]

Fuck.

[She mutters it out loud as she slams her phone down and buries her face into her pillow...

...?

And it's then that she hears a ding on her phone. Reading it, her heart practically leaps up into her throat when she sees who it's from... But she chooses not to respond, that reopened wound still too deep and too fresh for her to want to do anything.

But then there's another. A name of a place and a room number.

She stares at it for a long, long time, her heart beating wildly in her chest as if trying to escape and go to this place before she sets it down again with a deep breath.

...

And then the last one comes.

"Sleep well."

Once more, it feels like everything just cracks around her. That wall that she's built up over the course of the day crumbling all over again.

Without realizing, her fingers begin to type back.

You t

...

Fuck! Stop this. Stop it, stop it, stop it. Leave her alone!

She removes the words and throws her phone to the floor so that she can finally get some sleep.

Of course there is no escaping the messages that come in the days to follow. And of course, for whatever reason, she feels compelled to read them. It leaves a strange taste in her mouth, seeing them, and it angers her that whenever she hears that ding, she immediately reaches for it to see what it says... to see what sort of place or interesting thing he has to show her then, only to not respond. Still, she found herself waiting for them by their last day on Eltrut. Wanting to read them when they came, and even when she was in Barnabas's presence, she would excuse herself for a moment to check, blocking the screen from his view. He probably knew, but he never said anything. Never questioned her.

It's on the night that they finally depart Eltrut for Nogard that she heads to her room from Barnabas's late into the night, after much of the ship has already turned in. It's quiet, with only the sound of the boat's hull groaning as it sails smoothly across the sea...

...

....

Second after the door of her cabin swings open and before the lights are turned on, Cid will feel the cool press of steel to his neck.]

Lost, are we?

[She has yet to discover who it is that's lost his way.]

Xenk Yendar | DND Movie | Paladin

[personal profile] partybabysitter 2023-09-07 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I. Eltrut - Send-Off
I.a: Legends of the Hidden Temple
[ Teamwork is a skill Xenk admires, though one he's not actually very good at. He's used to just... doing everything himself. He doesn't have a problem with that! But let it never be said that he isn't willing to learn new things, because Xenk is here. And Xenk is ready.

He will greet his partner with a handshake to start. Of course he does! But soon enough, they'll be off, so pick your poison and try to keep up, Xenk Yendar lets no obstacle course bar his path.
]

I.b: Capture the Flag
[ If teamwork isn't your thing, perhaps a friendly game of Capture the Flag is more up your alley? And if you've ever wanted to see Xenk Yendar in a wet, white shirt, this is the time. Xenk has dressed down to his breeches and undershirt, looking far more handsome than a guy who's basically just about to play flag football should look. He grins at the prospect of friendly competition, and will wave at anyone he either knows, or who is likewise on Team Paladin.

He's also armed with these "water balloons." Though without his magic, it'll be an adventure to see whether or not his aim is any good. Maybe he doesn't need to, if he stands guard in front of one of his flags. You'd think the man was guarding a fallen friend, with how seriously he's taking it.
]

On your guard! Let none pass!

II. Royal Fortune - Paladins Prompts
II.a: Paladin Seeks Quest
[ Xenk has been on a few boats, but never has he crossed the sea like this. His sea legs, such as they are, have come in well enough. He is basically good at everything he tries, it's no question. All that said, he doesn't know exactly what to do, and is thus standing on deck, looking about for something to do, or someone to help. At least he was smart enough to leave his armor in his cabin. He has the look of a man on a mission -- once he finds that mission, that is. ]

Pardon me. Could I be of assistance?

[ Please someone put him to work, he needs the enrichment. ]

II.b: He Probably Does This Every Day
[ After a few days out at sea, Xenk can be found on the deck of the Royal Fortune, the dim light of the moon the only source of light at this hour. He stands alone in the dark, clad in only his breeches, his arms steady as he goes through the motions of swinging his sword; first in a wide arc, then in a flourish, the movements repeated over and over, practiced and solid.

He could do this for hours. He probably will, though he'll greet anyone who approaches.
]

Greetings. I see sleep eludes you as well.

II.c: Wake Up Call
[ To his friends, Xenk might be called a bit of a nuisance. Not through his own intentions, of course, he's never anything but polite. Never anything but honorable.

To the Paladins? Xenk might be a huge pain, actually. Because he is, like clockwork, definitely the man who wakes up every day at dawn and ensures that everyone is on time, everyone is at roll call, and that everyone is pulling their weight.

There is some loud, insistent knocking at your cabin door this morning.
]

Good morning! [ KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. Xenk speaks whether you've answered or not. This is the Paladin life, after all! ] As the captain is calling for rolls this morning at 6:30 AM sharp, I thought it best to wake you. Your presence is needed on the deck if you do not wish to tarry and delay the rest of the day's activities.

[ He isn't even trying to be passive aggressive, he truly believes that no one would want to delay the rest of the crew. I mean, you wouldn't, right? Of course not. ]

III. Elah - The Archives
[ As a lifelong student, Xenk is drawn to the Archive for more than simple work. He believes in knowledge, in protecting the legacy of the past and all their knowledge. Thus, his post at the library's entrance is more than a simple vigil. He stands watch, his senses open awake and aware, with his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. ]

III.a: You Have Been Caught Stealing
[ Should you get caught, you'll find Xenk has very little in the way of pity. As soon as you're spotted, he'll reach out to stop any theft. ]

A repository of knowledge such as this deserves the utmost repsect. You will not defile it with your thieving.

III.b: Roll for Stealth
[ If you happen to have, say, a bonus to Stealth and you want to sneak past Xenk, please feel free. Just be aware that he has excellent hearing, you might still catch his notice. ]

Who goes there? [ Xenk steps lightly away from his post. Just a bit. His hand waits at the ready on the hilt of his sword. ] Reveal yourself, and I shall grant you clemency. But I must warn you, should you continue this ruse, I shall have no choice but to exercise force.

[ Huh. Rikku flashes the man a welcoming smile. It's okay, she's had to push the adults in the room before... ]

Well, I guess I could. But it wouldn't really be as much fun, yeah? Think about it! Wind in your hair, free as a flying bird? All the problems down below look so tiny.

[ What a joy to be paired up with his friend(?) Jarlaxle! Well, friend may be a bit strong, but certainly Xenk is happy to see a familiar face, even if his own estimations of Jarlaxle have yet to be solidified. In the spirit of camaraderie, Xenk is more than happy to join in the festivities, and thus it is with that same spirit that he gazes upon the course, his own mind plotting a direct, straightforward route. ]

Gambling is a vice of a weak mind and an empty heart.

[ And yet, he looks Jarlaxle over, as if attempting to gauge his intent. Oh, he won't succeed, but he does try. ]

What manner of wager did you have in mind?

[Friendly acquaintance! They are, as far as Jarlaxle is concerned, on good terms. Good enough for a friendly bet. The initial reply is completely and totally expected, and the drow gestures, as if to prompt the other man along.]

That is neither a yes or a no though.

[Oh he seems well meaning enough! Same old dazzling smile, same old chipper attitude!]

I can see in the distance a massive ship's wheel. Between us and that wheel is the initial start to our obstacle course. From what I can see of this beginning leg, there is not much that would require teamwork, if both parties are fit enough.

Certainly we'll need each other's help later... But in the name of a little friendly competition up until that point, I would wager you that I could reach that wheel before you. Just a short race, and regardless of who arrives there first, our partnership will endure through the remainder of the run of course.

That hardly sounds morally questionable, does it?

[Although he heard someone approach, it's not until Valo barks that he actually turns to look and see that it's Tifa. He'll just look at her without much change in expression before his gaze turns back out to the course.]

It is.

[personal profile] partybabysitter 2023-09-07 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ They are certainly on good terms, they could simply be better. But given their shared home and Xenk's own belief that all beings are good and redeemable, he is more than willing to hear Jarlaxle out.

Xenk listens, and he watches as Jarlaxle calls out their course. Spinning logs and climbing rope... neither of these should prove a difficult obstacle for Xenk. Even the zipline doesn't seem too complex, from afar.

Indeed, Jarlaxle's gambit is a good one. Xenk is easily curious, and he can find no moral fault in the challenge, as of yet.
]

And what is it one would win, as a result of this wager?
