eighth bolt ⚡ nega-sacabambapsis
Who: Cid and Hawks
Status: Closed
Where: out on the ocean
What: some extreme fishing as they go after the Nega-Sacabambapsis, much to Cid's dismay
Warnings: none
[Upon hearing about this "evil" Sacabambapsis, Cid was actually a bit disheartened to think that such a magnificent creature could even become darkened as such. He was also curious how large these fish really could be since he was more familiar with their smaller form. What if they were just misunderstood and could be taken care of instead!?
Okay, no, he wasn't that foolish, but the thought may or may not have crossed his mind.
Still, if it's a menace then it needs to be handled, and the glorious reputation of the Sacabambapsis must not be tarnished!
Utilizing the Hideaway crew's ship, the Enterprise II, he has picked up someone else who had decided on taking on the bounty, and he approaches them as the ship quickly cuts through the waves towards one location where the fish have been sighted.]
Hawks, was it? Before we reach our destination, we should firm up our plans.

[ Hard to say how far they can push the boundaries of quirks. ]
Still doing the same thing. I patrol around, drop in on people who need help, chase away poachers at the sanctuary. That kind of thing. I wouldn't know what to do otherwise. At home, all I do is work.
no subject
[He then hears a shout from one of his helmsman, announcing the sighting of their quarry, and after a return command he grins at Hawks.]
Now let's see if we can't save this fish.
[And should they look ahead, they will be able to see an ominous giant, black fin breaching the water before it sinks back down.]
no subject
Now might be a good time to admit I'm not a duck.
no subject
Just means you shouldn't fall into the water, aye? But don't worry, we'll fish you out should anything happen.
[As they draw ever closer, the ship slows and the top of the giant fish emerges not too far away. It's as large and as black as described, and while it's keeping its distance everyone is now on deck just in case.]
no subject
[ He can swim enough not to drown for a couple of minutes, but getting airborne after falling in the water can be a real pain in the ass. It's better not to fall in.
He exhales, looking at the fish. ]
I hope he doesn't mind birds, or this is going to get a whole lot harder.
no subject
Here.
[He then kicks it open to reveal a few large canisters.]
Since we didn't really know what this particular branch of the species eat, we made some food based off what their smaller cousins eat. Mix of plant and meat. Carry this out and open it to drop the contents and it may let you pass.
...Though looking at the size, wonder if you should drop the whole lot.
no subject
Hawks grabs one of the canisters and hoists it up. He makes it look pretty easy, regardless of how heavy it is. ]
Alright, let's see if I can get their attention and we'll go from there.
[ Bird overboard! At least, he has wings, he can fly. It's not a problem. Hawks is only moving at a leisurely pace for him and he whistles. ]
Hey! Big guy! Look at me! How are you doing?
[ He's not sure if it's the kind of sea creature that's sentient or not. ]
no subject
The fish in question will slowly rise up further from the water and it is huge, bigger than a whale. Much larger than what anyone expected despite reading up on whatever reports there were at the time. And the fish eyes Hawks warily even if for it Hawks may just look like a buzzing fly. Rolling onto its side, it raises a fin as if trying to swat him away.]
no subject
Aw, come on, I was trying to relax here!
[ Yeah he might be a buzzing fly but he releases the food. ]
How about lunch, would that make you feel better?
no subject
Or whatever sound a giant fish larger than a whale can make rumbles over the waters as its massive mouth begins to open...
...
But upon tasting food it does seem to calm a little.]
Is it working?
no subject
Uh... [ That is a very good question. ]
You know, I mean...it ate it. Is that a good sign?
no subject
[He grabs another crate and kicks it open.]
Here, try another!
[Though honestly, he can't help but wonder if this is really enough for that giant fish to even taste with how huge it is... The ship is keeping its distance for safety reasons, but if it remains calm they may be able to move in closer.]
no subject
Now might be the time to admit I've never had a pet.
[ His animal handling experience is pretty much zero. A feather shakes loose and lands on the deck casually. Now he can hear him much better, he just won't say so. ]
Okay-
[ Whoosh, back up into the air and over to their new friend here. Time for another snack. At the very least this fish is taking the food. ]
no subject
the dicefate will allow them some success. The fish isn't going to be friendly right off the bat, but some of the tension seems to have lessened, the fish no longer thrashing in the water and is munching on the food provided.Seeing this, Cid will signal the ship closer while maintaining a wary eye on it.]
So far so good. Perhaps we might be able to lure it away to farther waters, away from this particular sea route. It's unfortunate we can't really communicate and know why it's out here in the first place...
Could be it looking for more food? Driven out by something else...?
[He can't help but muse aloud before looking up at Hawks since there's a lull in activity.]
Don't suppose you can see anything from up there, can you?
[If it's a food issue, maybe there's a lot of food like kelp or plankton or whatever this fish eats around... Or perhaps a predator(??) issue like something like giant squid or sharks somewhere else nearby. Things that might be seen through large shadows...]
no subject
[ Hawks shrugs a little bit at the creature but takes Cid's advice and flies around a little bit, gliding close to the water.
He doesn't really see a food issue, but there is a large shadow not too far out. He goes low enough to get as close to the surface, skimming the edge with his boots as he speeds along. Giant squid it looks like. Probably delicious.
He beats his wings and puts himself back up in the air and lands on the railing again. ]
There's a huge squid in that direction. Maybe it's keeping this guy over here.
no subject
[Cid had kept an eye on the fish, and the crew had tossed a few more canisters down to it to keep it occupied (and hopefully help it associate that at least this ship is friendly), so he looks at Hawks with some surprised interest.]
Quite possible...
[A rub of his chin before he grins.]
Well, even if it's not the problem I'm sure we can do something about it. Feel up to hunting?
no subject
[ What else does one do but eat fish? Surely Cid doesn't want it for a pet. ]
I haven't really done much fishing, but it can't be that hard can it?
no subject
While I've been able to improve my own skills, I haven't really fished squid much, let along one as large as this. But I'm sure a few harpoons, nets, and a bit of spark should do the trick.
[His levin dances at his fingertips as he grins.]
We just need to get it close to the surface and without it damaging the ship.
no subject
[ This is a great plan - a brilliant plan even. Hawks waits until they're a bit closer and takes off into the sky again.
He sends several feathers into the water at once to be a nuisance and catch attention.
Is that ever a mistake. The ambient sound of the ocean, the marine life, the boat cutting through and even the swishing of squid tentacles is enough to make him lose focus immediately in surprise.
Has Cid ever wanted to see someone's feathers literally ruffle? His feathers are all puffed up and his balance is more unsteady in the air. Hawks is gritting his teeth. Okay, things are much louder under the water. Good to know. Thanks for not teaching him enough science to not be surprised.
He's fine. Everyone else needs to look alive because poking a squid with sharp feathers is definitely going to get attention. ]
no subject
Of course squid is n o t happy about that, and it tries to lash out at the ship. Knowing this would happen, Cid slams his hand down against the deck and releases an extraordinary amount of levin. Of course, he can't cover the entire the ship. But the system he put in place to help defend the ship can. All over are special nodes that once sparked will start a chain reaction of electrifying the ship, which will give the ship a nasty shock when it tries to smack it.
Thus while the ship is rocked, the squid's tentacles are forced away.
With a low exhale and shake of his wrist, he shouts up at Hawks.]
Get the net!
[Said net will have been prepped and some crewmen have it ready for Hwaks to grab and throw onto the squid.
But they need to act fast. Although momentarily stunned, that squid won't make it so easy!]
no subject
Any tentacle that gets too close is bombarded with more feathers. Hawks is still airborne though, so he hasn't lost that many, but each one cuts into the squid, which is a decent deterrent at least. ]
no subject
no subject
That tentacle smacks him right out of the sky and into the water with a harsh splash. No points on his diving score. That's going to sting. ]
no subject
Hawks!
[While he quickly commands a group to try and help pull him out, focus has to return back to the squid. If they can deal with that then it might be easier to get Hawks out.
Problem is, he has to make sure Hawks is far enough away that he doesn't get electrocuted from the net. So for now he'll do isolated lightning strikes that should at least keep the squid on them and as far away from where Hawks landed as possible.]
no subject
Get it together. [ He mutters, more annoyed at himself than anything. He did mention he is not a duck and is therefore not very buoyant. Good news is, he's been dumped in water before. No matter how awkward it looks, he ducks his face into the water so he can get his wings flat onto the surface, enough to flap them.
Hawks appreciates the offered help, but he just waves a bit. He's fine. He gets himself up out of the water after a moment or two, looking like a drowned rat with wings. He coughs a a little and realizes he needs to get a bit higher up so Cid doesn't get him.
At least with the fact his wings have gotten smaller, this is easier than it would be otherwise. ]
