Welcome to the first Test Drive Meme for

escordvi! Anyone can participate in the test drive, regardless of invite eligibility. Just keep in mind that only those who have received invitations from the mods can actually reserve on August 25th and apply on September 1st. Our Interest Check can be found here.

For your toplevel, please include the following: Character Name | Canon | Armada Choice. If undecided, put "Undecided" for the Armada.

For everyone's convenience, TDM threads can be carried over in game if you wish! If you are still unsure which armada to place your character, you can play it a bit loose and vague in the TDM and make retroactive changes if you carryover the threads. We'll have more armada focused prompts in the opening log in September. The log itself is set to cover the next two weeks, until the end of the month. Characters will appear at random intervals during this time rather than all at once, so players have some more flexibility on how much more adjusted they are for someone else.

IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR MAGIC USERS!! All magic abilities will be "sealed" until characters get their tattoo from the Inkwave parlor in Eltrut. That means no magic on the starter ships before docking.

TOPLEVEL DIRECTORY (Updated August 28)

STARTER SHIPS: ORIENTATION

There are two ships that serve as starting ships for each armada: Stormbringer for the Corsairs, and Royal Fortune for the Paladins. There are various ways new arrivals—or riftfarers as they will be called, among other creative names—will appear on or by these ships.

🚪 Random room. It could be empty, filled with crates or supplies; down in the hull where the livestock are kept; have the luck to awaken in a bed...or the misfortune of that bed already occupied; somewhere in the kitchens; in the bathroom—any room! Now let's hope the doors can open or someone may have to try and ask for help. Or jump through the porthole if there is one and it's above water.
⛵ On deck. If not in the ship itself, another possible spot to wake up to is somewhere on the maindeck. If they're lucky, they're on the deck itself. More unfortunate souls may find themselves caught in the sails or netting, the crow's nest, or on the top of the masts. Someone should be able to help, right? Or catch.
🌊 In the water. The most unlucky sods will find themselves appearing in mid-air just past the ship and plummeting straight into the water. Good news, there's always someone on the look out for such a thing and calls for help to throw a lifesaver get the rowboat will be made. Are there sharks? Well... ...Are there?

However the new riftfarers arrive, they will be poorly clothed, practically rags or loose uniforms depending on the ship. Fortunately, veteran crewmates will guide them, escorting them to a room with a strange typewriter in it. After typing their name, the typewriter will magically continue and type by itself at a fast pace until it dings and rolls out the paper. This paper will have the following information:

• Name and Shellphone ID (journalname)
• Armada (Corsair or Paladin, will match the starter ship)
• Cabin Number for their personal cabin on the starter ship
• Apartment Address for their personal address at their base armada location
• A basic map of the starting locations in Eltrut, including written directions (continued in the Eltrut section)
• A basic map of where they can find a chest with their original clothes and belongings (this will be different for every person and will be anywhere either on the starter ship or on Eltrut—players can be creative here).

After that, the crewmate will do their best to explain the basics of how they got here, what's going on, and what they'll need to do to live in Escordvi while they are here, giving them a small leather pouch with money. They will be reaching Eltrut soon, so the crewmate will suggest they look around, meet the others who have arrived. Even from their distance, they will be able to see the giant sea turtle that serves as Eltrut's leviathan.

ELTRUT: FIRST GLIMPSE

After reaching the port of Eltrut, several birdfolk will appear and happily greet all the new arrivals from both starter ships. Here it doesn't matter which side they are affiliated with, as long as they keep those swords and weapons sheathed and not pointed at each other's throats. The birdfolk will even act as guides, showing them the main places they should visit and give them a visitor's map to help guide them.

🐚 Microshell. The first stop that is encouraged will be Microshell, the main store to acquire their own personal Shellphone. The paper they received on their starter ship will have their ID and the staff at the store will set them up, explaining how the device and the network works.
✒️ Inkwave, Tattoo Parlor. The next stop is Inkwave, a tattoo parlor run by a very burly but friendly octopus, Knistej. Here everyone receives their own unique magic tattoo, allowing anyone to cast specific single element spells and other magic. Note: tattoos are required before anyone will be able to use their original magical abilities.
📜 MANTA office. The final stop is the MANTA office, where all the request, mission, and task notices are posted. Each armada has their own branch office for armada specific notices as well. A great place to find jobs to earn some cash so they don't stay a hobo forever.

It's a lot to take in for sure, with the port city bustling with all walks of life. Not only do they have both armadas mingling with each other, there are different races and species from all over Escordvi gathered here. It's not just humans, which many riftfarers always seem to be surprised about. There are also plenty of veteran riftfarers who will gladly give some advice and even share stories of their world. Maybe some are familiar.

After finding their belongings, exploring the town, and meeting other people, being able to just sit back and enjoy a drink and warm meal will be in order. While there are plenty of places to choose from, the Minstrel and Cask will be the top recommended tavern for all newcomers to visit at least once. Great drinks, great food, and can learn a lot from the patrons or meet more people.

Of course, as expected of a highly popular tavern, it's not always peaceful. A man will ask travelers what they want to do with their life. Clearly drunk, he only accepts answers that hint at wanting to find riches. If told this he will give out a treasure map. But if told anything else, he'll put up a fight, hoping to deliver a black eye. Those who do receive the map will be sorely disappointed—it will lead them down a long, winding, circuitous path around town and end at a random outhouse, likely occupied and certainly stinking to high heavens. There's likely some kind of moral here, but at some point, others who have been duped will return to the tavern to sling their fists around.

Looks like another tavern brawl for the night.

QUESTS

For those who want to try their hand at some quests, there are a few that would do well for newcomers. Teaming up is of course encouraged, no matter what the affiliation. You can assume they acquired some kind of ship for the quests out at sea, either the starter ship or some other ship heading out there.

Spicy Squid Eating Challenge

Eltrut Port

There is a traveling food ship (think food truck but on the water) that has been going around challenging ships to their extraordinary Hornswaggle's Spicy Squid Eating Challenge. If participants can scarf down a prepared three-pound bowl of exceptionally spicy ghost pepper squid and rice, they will win their meal for free as well as a crate of dried spicy squid for their ship's stores. If participants fail, they will have to pay for the meal and the crate.

...Careful, are some of the squid tentacles still moving?

Coral Reef Snacks

Eltrut

Rumour has it that certain types of coral reefs contain unique properties that can make you more alluring to the one you desire, but no one is sure what the side effects are. Test this out by trying to crunch into chunks of coral reef pieces to see if there are any added effects on your body. Hopefully, they don't ruin your teeth in the meantime.

Oh, and you have to find the correct coral reef too! Red chunks seem to make you more affectionate towards others, while blue chunks seem to make you more volatile towards others. Eaters, beware!

Giant Sea Slugs

Starter Ships

Giant sea slugs tend to only attack ships if they feel threatened but are otherwise peaceful creatures. They're about the size of a large wild cat. They also secrete a slime that contains strong disinfectant properties. This thick slime is highly sought after for its ability to heal wounds cleanly, so kill them and collect as much slime as possible.

Killer Sharkgulls

Seagulls can be a pain to most ships. Yet, seagulls that have evolved to be violently carnivorous can be even worse. These new birds, effectively named sharkgulls, have been seen attacking ships and ports alike. They are big enough to eat small children in one gulp or will do their best to eat full-grown humans after they've ripped them to bite-sized shreds. Beware and kill them before they can kill you!

Siren's Serenade

Out at Sea

A merchant's ship has crashed upon an outcropping of rocks after being lured in by a group of rogue sirens. These captivating creatures possess the power to ensnare their prey with their enchanting voices, luring unsuspecting souls into the depths to meet the grim fate of drowning.

Search for the missing ship and help rescue the captive sailors before it's too late! You will be supplied with special earplugs to muffle out the siren's voices so be careful to keep your ears effectively plugged. You don't want to succumb to the siren's bloodlust yourself.

Any sailors or rescuers affected by the siren's song can be treated with a harpy's potion that can reverse the song's effect. Or tie up the afflicted for twenty-four hours to wait out the effects.

I. ARRIVAL:

[ Xenk Yendar arrived in the on the deck of the Royal Fortress. How long ago was this? With the way he carries himself, one might think it was ages ago. He stands at the starboard side of the ship, his posture immaculate, and his loose uniform making him look somehow more handsome -- like a character from a Balduran romance novel, washed ashore as the sole survivor to a deadly storm.

Casting his gaze along the side of the ship, Xenk leaps to action the moment he regains his bearings. He spots a person struggling in the water -- you, perhaps? -- and dives into the sea without hesitation, his dive graceful and practiced.

Xenk Yendar requires no Oath to do what is right. And he is, of course, an excellent swimmer. This dude has +8 to Athletics. ]

Fear not. [ With ease, he swims right up to the new arrival. ] Grab hold of me, and I will take us back to the ship.

II. INKWAVE TATTOO PARLOR

[ Even in rags, Xenk walks like a man in plate armor, taking longstrides up to the tattoo shop's proprietor and holding out his hand. Have you ever seen a Paladin introduce himself to an octpus? You will now. ]

Greetings and well met, noble Knistej! I am told you bear the means to restore my magic, and will do so without seeking recompense?

[ His eyes sparkle in admiration. A fellow noble soul! How wonderful! Knistej seems pretty nonplussed about this guy, but he gives him the spiel about the tattoos and tells him to think up something before meeting him in his chair to get started. ]

I see. And the appearance of the this tattoo is ours to choose? I must consider this.

[ He brings a hand to his chin as he considers this. already bears the mark of Thay on his forehead, he can't get much more conspicuous than that. ]

III. QUESTS

[ Xenk Yendar cannot in good conscience turn down a quest. Where there are people in need, Tyr decrees that he must provide succor. Which is why this is a bit of a Choose Your Own Adventure: ]

1. Spicy Squid:
[ Never one to be bested by so simple a challenge, Xenk can be found at the port, crunching on a piece of ghost pepper squid without even breaking a sweat. Is this guy even human? His bowl is empty. The people around him actually look a little concerned. ]

You must send my regards to chef Hornswaggle. His spices are delicious indeed.

[ He dabs his lips with a napkin, setting his empty bowl and utensils aside. ]

Now, was there more to this challenge, or shall I let the Royal Fortress know when to expect their shipment?

2. Killer Sharkgulls
[ You can assume he's regained his armor by now, because our man is decked in his proper half-plate, his longsword raised and ready to catch the sharkgull in its grasp. ]

Foul creatures, you will harm no others!

[ His stance is steady, his eyes nearly gleaming with intent. Finally! Killing monsters and protecting the weak is his life's purpose and it shows. ]

Come! You face Xenk Yendar, Paladin of Tyr!

Well, great! His work here is done!

Except, okay, I'm gonna be honest, he was about to eat one of these sharkgulls. And now he's gonna get caught by a fucking Paladin of Tyr.

Astarion sighs (quietly, to himself, from his position in the bushes) no dinner for him now, he guesses.

So he slides his way out of the bushes as if he was hiding from the sharkgulls not hiding to kill the sharkgulls. ]

Oh, praise the gods! Now that you're here, I won't have to hide. These creatures are simply dreadful! Who thought of putting two such things together? We're ever so lucky no one has tried this back in Baldur's Gate. The harbor would be in shambles!

[ Not exactly subtle but, I mean, paladin. It's +8 to athletics, not +8 to wisdom. ]

[ Alucard pointedly nudges the man with his toe. ]

Maybe I should get it to go. Yeah. But...either way. You helped out. It could have escalated and gotten worse.

[So regardless of her reasons, she did help. At least as far as Sorey figures. He still appreciates her stepping in before things escalated and more joined in the fight or something. If their friends had also stepped in to back those two up.]

Velvet, then.

[Whether she recognizes the emblem on his glove was he reaches a hand to hers in proper belated introduction.]

[ Would it be horrible enough if they made it ice cold or super hot? ]

I'm not sure.

[ She leans down a little, turning her ear to the bench. ]

You're going to have to speak up. Everyone should hear it for the trouble you caused them.

[ All of this goes completely over Laguna's head, but of course he can thoroughly understand and appreciate the enthusiasm that Sorey so clearly displays, and well-- Laguna loves people who are absolutely psyched about what they love. It made the world a better place when you were passionate about something, anything. ]

So are you an archeologist? Diving around ruins and the whatnot? It sounds like you've been to quite a few.

[ He's sitting their in the chair next to Sorey, and the questions just came natural. He was quite happy to hear the other guy speak. There were so many worlds that were represented and he had thought the world was vast but now? It had become infinite like the solar system *which he absolutely wanted to explore-- and one day, he'd get his dream. ]

Tifa just watches Eustace and Valo walk away, almost dumbfounded by the sudden retreat without so much as a goodbye. What started as an innocent misunderstanding turned into her most confusing encounter yet, even after being tattooed by an octopus.

A strange man, that one, and if she had to guess, she would go with the former, which was her gut instinct all along. Though, she also isn't one to assume, so she says nothing of the sort. Not that he gave her a chance, mind...]

Weird...

[It's all she says before she turns and carries on her way to the tavern she was recommended to get some food in her stomach.

Which takes her all the way into the evening. After spending some time with Red XIII as well as helping others out back on the Royal Fortune, she's told that there is an inn for those who would be more comfortable there than on a ship. Not that there was any problem with it, but she'd rather someplace a little more private and quiet for her first night here. It's a lot to take in—way too much to be honest, and she hasn't even had the chance to sit down and really think about how she feels about this place—but perhaps some sleep will have her feeling better.

It's as she's coming up to the inn, a map in her hand for directions, that she spots that familiar face from earlier. Rather, it was the ears that gave him away, and...

...

Well, a somewhat familiar face is better than none.]

Eustace! Valo! [She jogs the rest of the way to meet up with them in front of the door with a happy little hop in her steps.] Funny meeting you here...

[Especially after you left without saying goodbye!!!]

[ Dorian feels the hairs on the back of his neck stand at their ends as Astarion leans closer. Oh, to let himself indulge. Oh, to be simply himself. Could he do such a thing here?

It's a bit much to think about, on his first day. He's gonna Not. Plus ieems Astarion really does fancy himself a student of the necromantic arts. The question is, to what end? There are many and more who try to wield this power for ill ends. Dorian takes a tiny step back for this reason, (and not because he's dealing with his own shit) and tries to play it off in an aloof sort of way. ]

Oh, yes. [ He's flirting back, a little. Better to act the part than raise any alarm. And he does love talking about necromancy with people who aren't shunning it immediately. ] I've always been skilled at the manipulation of spirits, necromancy is just a more directed form of that same principle.

[ He's about to say something bad. Luckily, this is Astarion he's talking to. ]

You can't bring back the dead, mind you, but why not put them to use?

[ Alucard just stares for a moment, storm blue eyes studying Zack with a new sort of intensity even if a ghost of his smile remains. Of course what the other says is impossible. That's not how magic works. People didn't cross between worlds accidentally, and those that did without being Antari... Well, actually, Alucard wasn't sure. He'd heard it'd always been bad.

But if Zack was a liar, he was even better than Alucard, which pride suggested to be just as impossible. ]

I've had worse.

[ His fingers of the one hand are creeping up into his hair, though, moving to grip at the roots. ]

How close are we to London?

[ In every world, from what he understands, that's always been a constant feature. ]

I guess? Sort of? The history side of things is more like a hobby.

[That just happens to work well with being Shepherd and getting to travel so much as he does back home which increases his chance of coming across more ruins and the like. He's aware the other might not entirely grasp what he is talking about since it is sort of specific to Sorey's home but even so. He's still obviously passionate. Though he does wince slightly at watching one of the others get their tattoo, if only because of the needles.]

But yeah, you just gotta watch out for the traps is all.

😃 I think it's just a bit of personality. 🌊 There's all sorts of other symbols if you go looking for them.

Best way to learn something new is to take it apart and put it back together, but second is asking questions. Don't you worry none about being a burden, particularly not when we're figuring this all out.

[ Xenk glances sidelong at the elf. INSIGHT CHECK: SUCCEEDED. He lies, which is not to his favor, and he an air about him that reeks of death. It's not quite the same as that of Thay, but it is familiar in its own way. A creature stopped in time, steeped in blood and death.

A vampire? And in the sun? Interesting. Though Xenk is wary, the pale elf does not attack, thus Xenk will hold his blade. They share a common enemy, that should be all they need to find common ground, for now. Devotion is not exclusive to those who follow its tenets -- all are deserving of protection, until proven otherwise. ]

Indeed. The Lower City's struggles are numerous enough without the added threat of avian sharks.

[ He is 100% serious. Talk of Baldur's Gate means they share that knowledge as well. And so one of the birds shrieks and flies in to strike Xenk -- and is impaled with impunity on his blade, like it's truly no effort for him to do so.

But that's not all, of course. He's a paladin. The blade shines gold, brilliant light channeled through its glimmering runes. He drives it down once again, the searing blaze of a powerful Smite turning the sharkgull into a pile of bones and ash. ]

You must seek safety, if you are able, [ vampire, ] I have the matter well at hand.

[ There are like 3-4 of these left though, he might just need a hand once it's the rest of these guys' turn. ]

[Faris shoots the other man--another obvious pirate--a grin.]

If you ask me, it sounds like a snipe hunt. I expect next he'll say we need to fetch some luff for the t'gallants.

[The drunken map-pusher takes loud, angry exception to this, and Faris isn't surprised when the next thing that happens is an equally drunken punch aimed at the two of them--which Faris ducks.]

Alucard Emery. What an unexpected pleasure to meet another suspicious person.

[ The sapphire seems to do the playful wink for him. ]

Would you like to take a walk together, Astarion? Or was there somewhere in particular you'd like to be?

How I usually...?

[She only gawps at him, bewildered that he would even say such a thing. How she usually is? What is that supposed to mean? She is only the way that she is because of him, and only ever around him, so can he blame her!? He'll earn several daggers pointed at him as he makes for the door and heads inside the room, and Benedikta really does have half a mind now to make her escape.

Except when she does try to move, a new ache forms in her side that forces her to stop and lean against the wall, that single step more than enough to have her searching for air.

There's plenty of noise around the ship—footsteps above the deck, shouts, splashes outside, other people finding themselves in rooms and panicking as they run past her, but Benedikta pays all of it no mind. She can't... not with how there is no room to think of anything else but her own condition. It's so loud, but the silence around her has never been more deafening in the absence of Cid's company, or anyone's for that matter. Being alone with her thoughts... all the universe needed was that split second before all her doubts could start sinking their fangs into her again.

Her fears...

Fears of what all of this could mean. Why is she here? How did she get here? And why, of all the people who could have come to break down her door, was it the man she had thought of in what she believed to be her last moments? This must all just be a dream as Garuda uses her to destroy the world like she had asked, and Cidolfus was made manifest by those thoughts... And to have him helping her like this... To not have him preaching and singing his songs of saving the world to her, but to have him taking her by her hand and caring for her like he had back then...?

No.

This must all be a dream. A nightmare. Or hell.

But there is no way that this is real.

It's that thought that has her face twisting into a deep, thoughtful frown as she leans up against the wall, her hands shaking as they ball into fists at her sides, and tears lining the edges of her eyes again when he comes out.]

You are the second archeologist I've met actually-- I've also met someone named Sorey who does the same thing, goes ruins diving. That is so cool! [ The enthusiastic hand-shake is absolutely returned with such exuberance, they were probably going to be friends.

Even though they were on different sides-- but sides never really stopped Laguna from doing anything ] A sphere hunter? I'm thinking that sphere's are something big from where you are from? What are they exactly?

[Now there was a voice he was hoping to hear! After all, they'd gotten on so well before, he'd feel as if he'd missed a fantastic opportunity if he never caught up with him again. He made no attempt to hide the way he looked Astarion up and down, obviously approving of the costume change.]

I could say much the same for you! Well glad I am to know it lives up to your expectations. As I suspected; it was an absolute crime to put you in anything less. I'm glad I get to see you whole again, I'd have hated to be left wondering.

[He even tipped that plumed hat for him, the smile roguish and bright.]

Seems a bit odd to steal someone's belongings only to toss them in an unguarded hole, but then again hazing rarely has much of a point past idle cruelty. I suppose we should both be glad the cruelty today was just obnoxious inconvenience. In spite of those rags, you still made an impeccable first impression on me.

Why not put them to use?

His brain immediately rejects any thought that Cazador would have felt the same way. It's far too much. This isn't about that man, it's about his own desire for power. If he had to be this monster that he was, he might as well put it to good use. This is about him. And he is nothing like Cazador. Of course.

Of course he isn't. ]

My thoughts exactly! If all those bodies are simply lying around, they're of no use to anyone.

[ But a whole army of the dead? Maybe that would be enough to strangle Cazador by his throat and make him scream ]

[That sure is quite the arsenal on this little one... and Benedikta only grins down at her as she explains, a sweet smile curling her lips. Some of it is a genuine curiosity while the rest... Hm.]

It would prove useful, what with all the jobs that apparently crop up. And one never knows what beasts they might find out at sea.

IS NOT. look the only person who could get away with it is Krile and it would probably be only if Krile was in a particularly risk-taking mood and the noise that Faris makes is unfortunately not a dignified one, more like the squawk of a duck that's been startled by an overlarge restaurant bill.]

All right, all right! [She sets Julie down as quickly--though nicely--as she can.] Don't go getting sentimental. How'd you find yourself so far up top in the first place?

[ That smite seems pointed, doesn't it? Yes, yes it very much does. It would certainly have been enough to blind him, maybe give him a little 20 radiant damage as a treat if the tadpole weren't playing around with his insides. But as it is, he can simply look at it. As if it were nothing.

But that doesn't change the reality of this now pissed-off paladin, who he should have thought better of. You know what they say about assumptions! They make an ass of...somebody. Certainly not him.

He could leave! The Paladin told him he could, and he's not bound to stay here and help. But the Paladin is looking at him like he's two seconds from trying to turn undead, and that could get tricky. Mr. Goodytwoshoes could wander around town warning the locals about the vampire in their midsts.

So here's the plan: kill the sharkgulls, and then see if the Paladin will help him! And if he will not, he will simply kill him! Win-win!

Astarion pulls out his bow and rolls initiative. ]

This will only be a one time thing, just so you know.

[ The arrow flies from the bow as he says it, staring directly at the Paladin to make up for that very pointed smite that was directed at him. The arrow flies true, aided by the advantage of Xenk being right there, and also that Astarion hasn't been hit, and also, realistically, the blinding power of that stupid blaze.

He kills the sharkgull, is what I'm saying.]

Likewise. It isn't every day that someone propositions you to steal a boat with them.

[ He likes it. And the playfulness, too. ]

Well, I'm sure you know I've got no plans of my own. We're all just wandering around trying to make the best of a bad situation. So if it's company you want...

[ or, his tone seems to suggest, company ]

[ Ah yes, the Astarion laugh. It's Dorian's first time hearing it. What a character this elf is. Of course the man's hesitation reads only as that. Dorian knows that most don't see things from his perspective, so even the fact that Astarion isn't yelling at him about defaming corpses or whatever else is nothing but good in his book.

That he even agrees, well. A kindred spirit is a wonderful thing to have, even if one must be careful not to draw the wrong sort of crowd. ]
